There are a number of signs to show that you are listening. For example, when people are listening carefully, they will make eye contact with the speaker, nod, and make sounds such as ‘Mm-hm'. This makes the speaker more likely to continue.
The words that speakers choose are important. However, a huge amount of communication is non-verbal(非语言的). For example, when we are excited, we will talk faster, and more loudly, and the pitch of our voice goes up. When we are upset about something, our voices drop, and we may avoid eye contact. So you can listen to not only words but also what the speakers really mean.
