John was born in England in 1713. At that time, there weren't many books for children. People didn't think stories were important. However, John thought differently. He believed that children should have books designed just for them. As a child, he loved reading and decided to become a publisher (出版人) when he grew up. He began this work in the town of Reading in England. Then he moved to London in 1743. His first children's book A Little Pretty Pocket-Bookcame out in 1744 and it became a great success.
Soon, John published more children's books. Among them, there was a novel for kids called The History o f Little Goody Two-Shoes.
As a publisher, John helped publish about 500 books for readers of all ages. That included more than loo books for kids. This is why people call him "The Father of Children's Literature(文学)". And for more than 100 years, children's book writers have been popular for their great works.
Kids now can learn a valuable lesson from John's life. He followed his dreams and just loved books, and he thought everybody should have a try to read them.
