It was very quiet in the hospital on Christmas Day. I didn't think there would be any patients, Just then a woman and four small children appeared in front of my desk.
"Are you all sick?" I asked.
"Yes," the woman said weakly.
However, something became special when I asked what was wrong with them. Two of the children had headaches, but they didn't show the usual body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had headaches, but only one could tell me which tooth ached. The mother said she coughed but seemed to work to produce it.
Something was wrong, but I didn't say anything but explained that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her. She said, "Take your time; it's warm here. "
I saw that the family sat together near the Christmas tree. The youngest boy was pointing at the television and said something to her mother. The oldest girl near her brother was looking at the Christmas tree. I checked the form filled in by the mother. No address-they were homeless.
I told other nurses about the homeless family. All the nurses wanted to do something for them. We offered a free meal to our Christmas guests. We collected candies and fruit and other things from different people to give them.
When the family left, the youngest child ran back. He gave me a big hug and said quietly, "Thanks for being our angels today. "
