International Museum Day is on May 18th every year.
It started in 1977 and it has got much attention since then. 20,000 museums celebrated International Museum Day in 2009. They had events in more than 90 countries. In 2011, the official poster of International Museum Day was translated into 37 languages. In 2012, almost 30,000 museum s from 129 countries joined in the celebration.
Every year, many museums around the world join in International Museum Day. People celebrate it by holding fun, special and free activities. International Museum Day plays an important role in making people know museums are important for cultural exchanges (文化交流). During the International Museum Day celebration, many activities take place. There are some special activities from different countries. These special activities are different each year. Many groups around the world plan free trips to museums. Many people visit museums on this day.
