Typhoons (台风)and hurricanes(飓风) are both kinds of the same wind(太平洋).However, strong winds in the Atlantic(大西洋),it is called a hurricane in the US and a typhoon in the Asian countries.
People began to give them names in the early 20th century. An Australian forecaster(天气预报员) named typhoons for the first time with a man's name. Most names of typhoons are from animals, plants, and beautiful legends(传说),such as Koinu and Saola.
The typhoons are named by 14 countries including China and Japan.140 names are used on the typhoon name list, and these names are used repeatedly(重复地).When typhoons cause disasters(灾难)(移除) from the list. For example,Chinese Typhoon "Longwang" in 2005 and Typhoon "Haiyan" in 2013,were removed because of their bad power. That means the bad luck has its ending.
In China, typhoons with a wind force stronger than 8 are numbered according to its happening time each year. This is what we heard or saw from radio and television, "The No.14 Typhoon has gone already."
