I've been making shawls (披肩) for a few years and giving them away as gifts. I didn't know who would 1 it when I started a new one.
"Did you hear about Susan?" my workmate Lori asked me one day. "She'll have an operation (手术) immediately," Lori said.
"What a 2 time it is for her to get through!" "Maybe the 3 could be given to Susan," I thought to myself with 4 . But I only saw her in meetings, and we'd never had a private 5 . Wouldn't she think it 6 to receive something personal from an unfamiliar workmate?
Anyway, I asked Lori about the 7 of the hospital where Susan was having her operation. And I learned that Susan was well 8 . Friends and family were giving her best wishes. I put the shawl in a box, and sent it with a note, " I hope this brings you 9 ." I signed my name, unsure if Susan would even10 it.
I didn't mention it to anyone else at the office. Not even Lori. I was 11 to learn that Susan had told Lori about the shawl.
"She 12 it even when she went in for the operation," Lori said. "She didn't even let her husband touch it."
"I never expect she 13 my work so much," I said.
"It was not just about your handicraft (手工艺品). It was your message that cheered 14 up." Lori said smilingly. Then I realized my shawl 15 served a higher purpose.
