When Charley gets up one morning, he looks from the window and sees a lot of snow on the ground. On the road near their house, the snow is higher (更高) than Charley's head.
"We need a path (小路) through this snow." says his father. "I will make one if I have time. But I must be at the office early this 1 . Do you think you can make the path. son?" 2 asks little Charley.
"Me? The snow is higher than my head! 3 can I make a path through that snow?"
"By doing it little by little, how about having a try? " answers his father before he goes to his 4 .
So Charley gets the snow shovel (铲子) and starts to work. He throws up (铲起) the 5 one shovelful of snow and then another, but it is slow work.
"I don't think I can do it, mom," he says. "A shovelful is so little, and
there is so much snow."
"Little by little, Charley." says 6 mother. " That snow
falls (落下) in very small pieces, but you 7 see a lot of snow now."
"Yes, mom, I 8 , " says Charley. "If I do it little by little, I will soon finish the work." So he works on.
When his father comes home in the evening, he is happy to see the fine path. The next day he gives little Charley a fine 9 sled. It is Charley's favorite color. He has a brown schoolbag, too. There are yellow letters "Little by Little" 10 it.
