A university professor and his elderly mother have become social media stars in China. Prof Hu has been bringing his 80-year-old mother. has Alzheimer's, to his classes. Freshmen at the university at first assumed that she was a (retire) professor sitting in on classes, before (realise) it was Prof Hu's mother. She is very quiet during his classes and the students have come to accept her with (warm).
It is reported that Prof Hu's father died in 2011, and although he has (young) sisters, he has taken on the responsibility of looking after his mother, because her brain disease means that he is the only one she recognises. He said that her symptoms were now so severe “she cannot tell the difference between when she is holding a soft drink, sugar, salt, or washing powder”.
Weibo users have praised Prof Hu a filial son (孝子), as well as a good educator - not just in economics, but in life.
Respect towards parents, elders and ancestors (consider) a key value in Chinese society and culture. The concept (go) back to 400BC and is a core virtue of Confucianism (儒家), described in the early (work) of China's best-known scholar.
