Student Science Fair
For Students in Grades 7-9
Dates: October 30-31
Location: Sunshine Secondary School Gym
Explore Your World …Think Like a Scientist
The Student Science Fair offers a great way for you to put your science knowledge to use!
Science Fair Events
There is plenty to do during the science fair. Of course, you will want to take a look at all of the students' projects. There will be other exciting things too. These events will highlight(亮点)the wonderful world of science. The announcement of the winners will take place at the awards ceremony(典礼)on Friday afternoon. Several of the other events are listed below.
Meet a Robot!
Can people and robots work together? The answer is “Yes”. Scientists will be at the fair on Thursday October 30, with Modo. Modo is a robot helper being developed to help people with jobs they do. Let's learn how Modo's large blue eyes are able to “see” things. Watch Modo take and hold objects and move them from side to side. Then see how Modo puts the objects on a shelf. Touch Modo on the arm. Watch what happens! It will respond to your touch. If you push it too hard, it will say, “Ouch”!
Our Own !
As is known to all, William Shakespeare is well-known to almost all writers while Thomas Edison is familiar to the inventors. Here comes our local Thomas Edison. Make sure you're in the gym at 10:00 a.m. on Friday. That's when local genius Ray Allen will give a talk about his life as an inventor. He will also show what his inventions can do.

Most of us have ever imagined the life on a desert island. We sometimes imagine a desert island to be a sort of paradise(天堂) where the sun always shines. Life there is simple and good. Ripe fruit falls from the trees and you are free to sit around without any work. This is really a beautiful picture, isn't it? However, the other side of the picture is quite the opposite. Life on a desert island is awful. You either starve to death or live like Robinson Crusoe, waiting for a boat which never comes.
Perhaps there is some truth in both these pictures, but few of us have had the chance to find out. We can only experience it in the story like the following.
Many years ago, two men spent five days on a coral island and they wished that they could stay there longer. They were driving a badly damaged boat from the Virgin Islands to Miami to have it repaired. During the journey, their boat began to sink(下沉). They quickly put food, matches, and cans of beer into a rubber dinghy(救生筏) and rowed for a few miles across the Caribbean until they arrived at a tiny coral island.
There were hardly any trees on the island and there was no water, but this did not seem to be a problem. The men collected rainwater in the rubber dinghy. As they had brought a gun with them, they had plenty to eat. They caught lobster and fish every day, and they thought they lived just like a king. Five days later, a tank passed by and saved them. However, they felt sorry that they had to leave.

Silk production has a long history and colourful history unknown to most people. Scientific discoveries have shown that silk production began in China around 2,500 B.C., although it could be much older. For hundreds of years, China kept the secret of silk to itself as one for the most closely protected secrets in history. Anyone telling the secret of silkworms or trying to take silkworm eggs out of ancient China was punished in prison.
At one time silk was served only for the Chinese emperor. Step by step, others began wearing silk. In addition to being used for clothing, silk was used to make musical instruments, fishing lines, ropes and even paper. During the Han Dynasty silk became a form of money.
However, the Chinese finally lost their monopoly(垄断) on silk production. It reached Korea in around 200 B.C. when some Chinese people arrived there. Silk production came to India in 300 A.D. In 500 A.D., silk production came to Europe when travelers smuggled(偷运) out silkworms in empty pipes of bamboo. These were used to set up silk factories in Rome, although Chinese silk was still considered to be the best.Silk was brought to Rome from China by means of the Silk Road. There were actually two Silk Roads, one over land and one on the sea. Especially the land route had a huge effect in history. All sorts of trade goods were passed along this road. Ideas travelled the Silk Road, too. For example, the religion of Buddhism(佛教) was carried to China from India by traders on the Silk Road. The Silk Road created the first international culture, showing many people the ideas and treasures of both Western and Chinese cultures.
Are you carrying too much on your back at school? I'm sure lots of children of your age will, say "Yes". Not only the students in China have this problem, but children in the United States also have heavy school bags. Doctors are starting to worry that younger and younger students are having back and neck problems as a result of schools bags being too heavy for them.
"It's hard for me to go upstairs with my bag because it's so heavy, "said Rick Hammond, an 11-year-old student in the US.
Rick is among students who have common school bags with two straps(带子) to carry them, but many other students choose rolling(有滚轮的)bags. But even with rolling bags, getting up stairs and buses is still a problem for children. Many of them have hurt their backs and necks because of the heavy school bags. But how much is too much? Doctors say students should carry no more than 10% to 15% of their own body weight(重量). Scott Bautch, a back doctor, said children under Grade 4 should stay with 10 % . But it is also important that older children don't stay with over 15 %, because their bodies are still growing. "Children are losing their balance(平衡) and falling down with their school bags, "he said. Parents and teachers are starting to tell children to only take home library books they will be reading that night. Some teachers are using pieces of paper or thin workbooks for students to take home. One of the best answers is, as some children said, to have no homework at all!
