Be Yourself
We wish that we could be better at sports or more attractive. We wish we had nicer clothes or more money.Everyone likes to feel that he or she is special.1, many of us grow up believing that we're not special at all.We believe we are not good enough just as we are.
Most parents want us to be the best we can be. Very often, they compare us to 2.By doing this, they try to encourage us to do better. They 3 well, but the message we often get is that we're not good enough. We begin to believe that the only way we can be special is 4 being better than someone else, but we are often disappointed (失望).There will always be someone out there who is better than we are at 5 Plenty of people around may not be as smart as we are, but they are better at sports.Or they may not be as good-looking, but they have more money, It is 6 for us to be better than everyone else all the time.
We all want the things that we believe will make us 7 people. But very often we don't realize that we already have8 us the very things that we want. These things make us different from others. When we are growing up, 9 sometimes forget to tell us that we are special, that we are good enough.Maybe no one told them when they were growing up.10 , it's up to us to remind them from time to time that each of us, in our own way, is special. What we are is enough.
"You're just in time, Joe.We're going to play cowboys and Indians, and you can be the Indians," one of my cousins said.
"How many Indians?" I asked.
"Oh, about a thousand," he answered, and before I could say no, I was pushed out into the night and became a thousand Indians. Two minutes later I was running in the fields with a group of cowboys behind. The shouts of "After them. Let's catch the killers!" and other such TV play language came into my ears as I ran round a corner and hurried into my Grandpa's car.
"We've got him, boys.Let's go and catch him!"
But no one wanted to come to get me.All of my cousins except one were always very friendly with.It was quiet outside. And I went out of the car to have a look.
Just then I heard a shout, "Bring the rope, and we can burn him."
"Only Indians burn people.Cowboys."I stopped just in time. I had almost said, "Cowboys hang people."
I was tied to a tree, and the cowboys were looking for some wood when my dear mother called, "We're leaving now."
"Untie me," I shouted."We're going."
"Why did Bobby want matches'?" Mum asked when we were in the car."He was asking Dad whether he had any."
"Oh, he was just going to get matches? MATCHES? Are you sure he wanted matches?"
Mother was quite sure, and I didn't say any more.
One of the best-known American writers of children's books is Alfred Strong, or Doctor Strong, as he is better known to readers everywhere. Now, an art show called "Doctor Strong From Then to Now" is travelling around the United States. The pictures and drawings show the history of Doctor Strong.
Doctor Strong first became famous almost fifty years ago when his first children's book was published (出版).Since then, he has written forty—five books that have been sold more than one hundred million copies around the world.
Doctor Strong's books are known for their easy use of words and colourful, hand drawn pictures. These drawings bring life to his imaginary creatures, The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, and hundreds of others.
The San Diego Museum, in California, organized the art show.It included about three hundred Doctor Strong's early drawings and some of his writings.
Most of Doctor Strong's books, although written in a funny way, have serious messages. For example, in McElligot's Pool, he describes the danger of pollution. He discusses the arms race (军备竞赛) in The Butter Battle Book, written in nineteen eighty four.
Doctor Strong says he never planned to write stories just for children. He says he writes stories that interest people of all ages.He says he uses easy words so that everyone, even a child, can understand.
Bill Fuller, the postman, whistled(吹口哨) cheerfully as he pushed his bike up the hill towards Mrs Dunley's house. His work for the day was almost finished. His bag, usually quite heavy when he set out on his road, was empty now except for the letter that he had to deliver(递送) to Mrs Dunley. She lived over a mile from that village so that, when Bill had a letter for her, he always finished his day's work much later. He did not mind this, however, because she never failed to ask him in for a cup of tea.
When Bill entered the gate of Mrs Dunley's house, he was surprised not to find her working in the garden. She usually spent most afternoons there when the weather was fine. Bill went straight round to the back of the house, thinking that she might be in the kitchen. The door was locked and the curtains were drawn. He returned to the front of the house and knocked hard on the door. There was no answer. Bill thought that this was very strange because he knew that Mrs Dunley hardly left the house.
Just then, he noticed that her bottle of milk, which was delivered early in the morning, was still on the doorstep. This worried him. If Mrs Dunley had not taken in her milk, perhaps she was ill. Bill walked round the house until he found an open window. He squeezed(挤) through it. Then he went into the hall. There he almost fell over Mrs Dunley, who was lying at the foot of the stairs unconscious(昏迷不醒的). Realizing that there was little he could do for her, Bill rushed out of the house, stopped a passing car and told the driver to telephone for an ambulance(救护车) as soon as he got to the village.
For a long time being happy was considered something that just happened, and there was nothing special about it. Now we know that getting along with other people is something that we can work at. It is possible to act in such a way that other people will like us better. One way is being unselfish, not wanting everything from our friends. Another way is to look for good points, not bad points in other people. It is surprising how successful this treasure hunt can be.
You do not have to be spineless (优柔寡断的) in order to be popular. In fact, you will be liked or loved if you are not afraid to stand up for your rights (正当行为). But do it politely and pleasantly. Being friendly and polite to your group, to other people and to strangers and especially to those who do not look important or do not interest you is one way to develop a good character.
You cannot expect to be perfect, and you must learn not to be unhappy when you make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, and no one is to be blamed if he does not refuse to learn from them. Many young people become discouraged (灰心丧气的) when they know in themselves qualities that they do not like—selfishness, laziness, and other unpleasant qualities. Just remember that we all have some of these faults (缺点) and have to fight against them.
At the same time, it is important to remember that while you are probably no worse than others, the best way to be happy is to think yourself above other people. When something is wrong, it is good sense to try to make it right. Perhaps you do not like a teacher or a classmate. Try to see why, and look at yourself, too, to be sure that you are not doing anything to make that person dislike you. Some day, things may turn out all right when you have to learn to get along the best with the situation, without thinking too much about it. Worrying never helps in a situation you cannot change.
Mistakes are great teachers. Success comes to those who are willing to risk making mistakes to achieve their goals and wishes, and who are able to learn from those mistakes. And in order to learn from mistakes , you must be willing to pay for them .
Mistakes can be very valuable, but when you try to get others to pay for your mistakes, then you lose the chance to learn from them. When something goes wrong, it's usually very easy to find someone else's mistakes, but is that useful?
Much of the value of mistakes comes from the fact that they need a cost that must be paid. The person who learns the most from a mistake is the one who pays the price for that mistake.
When you make a mistake, what you shouldn't do is to run away from it. You need to accept it because you can learn a lot from it. The mistake has been made, so make the most of it. Pay the price, learn the lesson, and grow that much stronger.
When you make a mistake, don't look back at it long. Remember the causes , and then look forward. Mistakes are lessons of wisdom. The past cannot be changed. The present is still in your power. Make full use of your mistakes to achieve your goals and wishes.
