A ten-year-old from Howell, Michigan is being praised as a hero thanks to his persistence (坚持) that led to saving the life of an elderly neighbor. The event happened late in an evening when Danny DiPietro was being driven home from hockey practice by his mom.
That's when the young boy noticed an open garage (车库) and a figure that he believed was a dog outside an apartment building near his house. Given the freezing cold weather, the young boy got a feeling that something was not right. But instead of dismissing it like most kids his age would have, he insisted that his mother, Dawn, find out what was going on. Dawn tried to make Danny believe that no one would leave a dog out in such cold weather, but he refused to take no for an answer.
Dawn finally gave in and decided to drive to the area with the family dog and see if there was any truth to Danny's hunch (直觉). Sure enough, as she got closer to the apartment building she noticed a garage that was wide open and someone waving madly for help. Upon getting there, she realized that it was not a dog the young boy had seen, but Kathleen St. Onge. The 80-year-old had fallen down on some ice in her garage and had been lying there for two hours, unable to get up.
Dawn rushed home to get her husband to help and called 911. The two then returned with some blankets to cover Ms. St. Onge, while they waited for the ambulance (救护车) to arrive. Though still in hospital, the elderly woman is recovering well and forever grateful to Danny, for following up on his hunch!

From self-driving cars to carebots for elderly people, rapid development in technology has long represented a possible threat to many jobs normally performed by people. But experts now believe that almost 50 percent of occupations existing today will be completely unnecessary by 2025 as artificial intelligence continues to change businesses.
"The next fifteen years will see a revolution in how we work, and a revolution will necessarily take place in how we plan and think about workplaces," said Peter Andrew, Director of Workplace Strategy for CBRE Asia Pacific.
A growing number of jobs in the future will require creative intelligence, social skills and the ability to use artificial intelligence.
The report is based on interviews with 200 experts, business leaders and young people from Asia Pacific, Europe and North America. It shows that in the US technology already destroys more jobs than it creates.
But the report states: "Losing occupations does not necessarily mean losing jobs — just changing what people do." Growth in new jobs could occur as much, according to the research.
"The growth of 20 to 40 person companies that have the speed and technological know-how will directly challenge big companies," it states.
A 2014 report by Pew Research found 52 percent of experts in artificial intelligence and robotics were optimistic about the future and believed there would still be enough jobs in the next few years. The optimists pictured "a future in which robots do not take the place of more jobs than they create," according to Aaron Smith, the report's co-author.
"Technology will continue to affect jobs, but more jobs seem likely to be created. Although there have always been unemployed people, when we reached a few billion people there were billions of jobs. There is no shortage of things that need to be done and that will not change," Microsoft's Jonathan Grudin told researchers.
My son was a second-grader. He went to school by bus every day. He was the first student on in the morning, as we were farthest from school, and the last student off in the evening. I was a teacher myself and it was a comfort to realize the school staff (职员) were all working as hard as I was to provide a safe learning environment.
One day I came home from work and waited for my son to get home for a long time. Then I called the school. "Perhaps he's just a bit late," said the secretary. "I will call the driver to see if those children are home." A few minutes later, I answered the phone to hear that the other students were home. Then I called his friends' parents, to see if perhaps he had gotten off at their stop to play. The answers were all "No."
By that time, it was dark and I was scared. My home was in the mountain areas, and it was said that a wolf had come up somewhere. My husband wasn't at home, so I forced myself to calm down and decided to go out to look for him. I was about to go out when the telephone rang; it was from the driver. "He's okay," I heard. "He was asleep on the seats in the back, under a couple of jackets. Since it's dark, can he spend the night with my family?"
I was relieved and agreed. Since my son had a great adventure, the school started giving a copy of the list to the driver, so he could check off the children's names when they got off the bus. I think highly of the school for taking the cautionary (警戒的) step ahead; it is a sign of their concern for students, parents, and staff.
How teens can stay fit
Any type of regular, physical activity can improve your fitness and your health.
Exercise should be a regular part of your day, like brushing your teeth, eating and sleeping. It can be in gym class, joining a sports team, or working out on your own. Keep the following tips in mind:
A good attitude is important. Find an activity that you think is fun. You are more likely to stick with it if you choose something you like. A lot of people find it's more fun to exercise with someone else, so see if you can find a friend or family member to be active with you.
Take it one step at a time. For example, walk or ride your bike to school. Get on or off the bus several blocks away and walk the rest of the way. Use the stairs instead of taking the elevator.
Get your heart pumping (跳动). Whatever you choose, make sure it includes aerobic (有氧的) activity that makes you breathe harder and increases your heart rate. This is the best type of exercise because it increases your fitness level and makes your heart work better. Examples of aerobic activities are basketball, running, or swimming.
Don't forget to warm up with some easy exercises or stretching (拉伸) before you do any physical activity. It is also important to stretch out after you exercise to cool down your muscles.
A. It also burns off body fat.
B. Stay positive and have fun.
C. Make physical activity a habit.
D. Small changes can add up to better fitness.
E. The most important thing is that you keep moving!
F. This warms your muscles up and may help protect against injury.
G. Do the activity as often as possible, but don't exercise to the point of pain.
The sky was getting dark as we walked through the forest. My two friends and I felt hot and 1. We were heading for a small village in northern India. The villagers were 2 us, but we were already four hours late.
As the last of the daylight 3, we began to feel very 4 and afraid. We tried to find our way to the village, but it was 5 to tell which path we should follow in the darkness. All around us, strange creatures made 6 noises as they woke up and began to hunt for food. We hoped they wouldn't want to eat us!
Then George, who was in front, 7 suddenly. He ran towards us rapidly, pointing at a large, dark shape moving through the trees. We could 8 the black stripes (条纹) and shining yellow eyes of the most dangerous animal in the 9. We stared at the tiger, too 10 to move.
After a few seconds that felt like hours, there was the sound of branches (树枝) breaking, and the tiger jumped at us, roaring (咆哮) loudly. We 11, because we were sure it would kill us.
12, though, the tiger stopped — and then I noticed that it had six legs, two of them 13!
The "tiger" stood up, and a young man 14 the striped skin covering his head and shoulders. "Hello!" he said, smiling broadly. "I'm Abi, from the village. When you didn't 15, we were worried, so I came to 16 you," he explained. "It's traditional for us to 17 the tiger skin to greet new guests ... and I couldn't help playing a trick on you! I hope you don't 18."
Recovering from the 19, we began to laugh. We followed Abi to his village, where the villagers gave us a warm 20.
Food from the air
Everyone has seen plants growing, but have you ever thought they get their food? In the seventeenth century, a European scientist (call) Van Helmot asked this question. Like most people, he thought that plants must get their food from soil. However, Van Helmot decided (test) the theory with experiments.
First, he dried some soil, put it into a pot and weighed it. Next, he weighed a small tree, planted it in the pot and added rain water. Then, he watered it (regular) with rain water.
After five years, he removed the tree from the pot and weighed it again. He found that the tree had gained huge amount of weight. When he weighed the soil, however, it was almost exactly the same as it had been five years . So Van Helmot drew the (conclude) that the tree grew by drinking water. Though it turned out to be wrong, he showed the importance of the use of scientific evidence to support ideas.
We now know that plants and trees make their own food. Their leaves, when exposed the air and sun, are like factories can change the energy from the sun into chemical energy. During this process (过程), oxygen and sugar (produce). The oxygen is released back into the air, and the sugar is used by the plant as food.
