When I was 15, I said to my class that I was going to write my own books. All the students nearly fell out of their chairs,1me. "Don't be silly. Only geniuses(天才)can become writers. And you are getting a D this term." I was deeply2and I couldn't help crying.
That night I wrote a short, sad poem about my3dreams and mailed it to the Weekly
Newspaper. To my surprise, they published(发表)it, and sent me two dollars. I was a paid writer!
I4it to my classmates. They laughed again. "Just luck." they said. However, I had tasted success. Because my first poem5published.
By the time I graduated from high school, I had collected all my published works together. But I6talked about my writing to my classmates again. They were7killers. And people must always keep on their own dreams by8. Later, I wrote a book about9I understood and felt about my life. It10me nine months to finish it. I chose a publisher(出版商) and mailed my book. I wrote a note11it, "I wrote this book myself. I hope you will like it. Thank you."
A month later,12I received a letter, with an invitation for publishing the book. It became a bestseller(畅销书), and13into 15 languages. People ask what college I attended and what degrees(学位)I have got. The answer is none. I just write. I'm not a genius, and I'm not talented. I just write. To all those who dream of14, I should say to you, "Yes, you 15be writers! Always keep writing!"
Here's a shopping receipt(收据)of Linda.
A farmer had a cow. He took very good care of this cow and one day when she was ill, he was very worried. He telephoned the vet.
"What's the problem?" The vet asked him when he arrived.
"My cow's ill," the farmer said. "I don't know what's the matter with her. She's lying down and won't eat. She's making a strange noise."
The vet looked over the cow. "She's certainly ill," he said, "and she needs to take some very strong medicine."
He took a bottle out of his box, put two pills into his hand and said, "Give her these. The pills should make her better."
"How should I give them to her?" the farmer asked.
The vet gave him a tube(管子)and said, "Put this tube in her mouth, then put the pills in the tube and blow. That'll make it."
The next day the vet came to the farm again. The farmer was sitting outside his house and looked more worried.
"How's your cow?" the vet asked.
"No change," the farmer said, "and I'm feeling very strange myself."
"Oh?" the vet said. "Why?"
"I did what you said," the farmer answered. "I put the tube in the cow's mouth and then put two pills down it."
"And?" the vet asked.
"The cow blew first," the farmer said.
"Everything happens for the best," my mother said whenever things weren't going my way.
"Don't worry, one day your luck will change." Mother was right, as I discovered after I had finished my college education. I had decided to try for a job in radio. One day, I wanted to host(主持)a sports program. I went to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station. But I got turned down every time.
In one station, a kind lady said my problem was that I hadn't got enough experience. "Get some work with a small station and work your way up," she said.
I went back home. I couldn't get a job there, either. Then my dad told me a businessman had opened a store and needed someone to help him. But again, I didn't get the job.
I felt really down. "Your luck will change," mom said to me. Dad lent me the car to help me to look for my job. I tried another radio station in Iowa. But the owner, a nice man, told me he had already had someone.
As I left his office, I asked, "How can someone be a sports announcer(播音员)if he can't get a job in a radio station?"
I was waiting for the lift when I heard the man call. "What did you mean? Do you know anything about football?" He put me in front of a microphone and asked me to try to imagine that I was giving my opinion on a football game, I succeeded.
On my way home, mom's words came back to me, "One day your luck will change, son.
And when it happens, it'll feel doubly(加倍的)good because of all the hard work you've had." At that moment I knew what just she meant.
On November 18th, 1908, three men went up in a balloon. They started early in London. The headman was Auguste Gaudron, and the other two men were Tannar and Maitland. They had a big balloon, and they were ready for a long way.
Soon they heard the sea below them. They were carrying the usual rope, and it was hanging down from the basket of the balloon. At the end of the rope they had tied a metal box. This could hold water. Or it could be empty. So they were able to change its weight. They were also carrying some bags of sand.
After the sun rose, the balloon went higher. It went up to 3,000 meters, and the air was very cold. The water in the balloon became ice. Snow fell past the men's basket, and they could see more snow on the ground. There was also some snow on the balloon, and that made it very heavy. It began to go down towards the ground. The men tried to throw out some more sand; but it was hard.
They tried to break the icy sand with their knives, but it was not easy. The work was slow and they were still falling; so they had to drop some whole bags of sand. One of them fell on an icy lake below and made a black hole in the ice.
At last they pulled the box into the basket. It was still snowing; so they climbed to get away from the snow. They rose to 5,100 meters! Everything became icy. They were so cold that they decided to land. They came down in Poland heavily but safely. They had traveled 1,797 kilometers from London!

Alice: OK. I'll be quick!
He Wei: No problem. You don't need to rush!
Dear Jack,
How are you? I had great fun last Saturday, June 20th. It was a traditional festival (call) Dragon Boat Festival that day.
This festival is in memory of Qu Yuan, one of(great) Chinese poets. He killedby jumping into the Miluo River on May 5th of the Lunar calendar, 278BC. People there rowed the boats(save) him, it was too late. They were very sad and then threw rice into the river to feed the fish so that they would stay away from his body.
From then on, every year on this day, people enjoy(eat) zongzi once a year, but now we regard it as our daily food.
Have you ever(watch) the dragon boat races on TV? It is another important part of this festival. Several(team) row their dragon-shaped boats as fast as they can. The first team to reach the finish line.
If you have a plan to visit China next year, would you like to spend this festival us?
Best wishes,
Xiao Qiang
