Do you like sports? All over the world people enjoy sports. Sports can help people to keep healthy, happy and to live1. What sports do you like? People often2different games in winter and summer. Summer is good3swimming. And in winter people often go skating. Some sports are very popular around the world4basketball, football and running.
Do you often run? Are you good at it? Here is a funny story about running!
Peter and Mike are in the same class. Peter was born5a poor family. But Mike's father is a shopkeeper and is6. When Peter gets into trouble, Mike always7him. Peter likes to have sports. And he is good at running.8can catch up with him in his school and he often wins the 400-meter race.
It was Sunday. Mike and Peter went to a forest to have a picnic. Mike took a lot of 9 there. They ate and drank and then began to go fishing in the river. The two boys enjoyed themselves there. Suddenly they10a great noise. They looked around and found it was 11behind a big tree. They were both very12. Peter put on his shoes13and was going to run away. Mike14him and said, "It's no use for us. The tiger runs15than us.
Let's find a way." "It doesn't matter," said Peter. "I'm sure I'll run faster than you!"
Don't you think you should learn to run fast?
Do you know extreme(极限的)sports? Extreme sports are often dangerous. But many people like them. A lot of people want to do them, even women. Do you know why? One said, "Because they can make me look very cool." Do you think so? Read about them below. Then you can know a lot about them.
Bungee Jumping: People on some South Pacific islands did bungee jumping for hundreds of years. In 1979, some people bungee jumped off a bridge in England and made the sport popular around the world. Bungee jumping came to China in 1996.
Skateboarding: At first, this sport was called "sidewalk surfing". Skateboarders often jump high into the air, go down steps or slide(滑动) down rails on their boards. They wear baggy trousers so they can move more freely.
Skydiving: This is probably the scariest (最惊险的) extreme sport. Skydivers jump out of airplanes about four kilometers up in the sky. They usually fall freely for a while and then open a parachute (降落伞) to slow down for a safe landing.
Snowboarding: This became a winter Olympic sport in 1998. People tied their feet to the board with special shoes. They don't use any ski sticks. Then, they ride down hills, jump high and do tricks. |
Everyone has his own way to learn English. To me, the best way to learn English is to write the new words several times. For example, when I learned the colors or the numbers or even the names of our clothes, I always write each new word five or ten times! This helps me a lot!
It's also a good idea to talk with our friends or teacher in class in English. We can practise the new vocabulary and we can learn from the mistakes during our speech at the same time.
Next advice is to read a lot, not only books but newspapers and magazines! When you are reading, even if you don't understand the meaning of the word, you can still understand the main idea of the passage. And you'd better try to guess what the word really means!
Finally, if it's possible, go to Britain and try to have conversations with native(本国的) speakers or listen to them speak. Go shopping, go to the dinner, go to a movie or even to a theatre and you will see it is the best way to learn English! You will also have the chance of learning a new culture(文化)and visiting new places.
My holiday with grandma and grandpa is great! They lived with us in New York, but they moved to Ariz when I was five. Dad usually visits them. He is sending me to stay with them for a two-week holiday.
This is my first time to travel by myself. On the plane, I study the picture from grandma. It's a picture of an old village and the village is on top of a tall hill. It looks high, and I am not sure I can climb so high.
Grandpa meets me at the airport. When we drive away from the city, I look at the beauty of the place new to me. Soon we get to my grandparents' village. We are so high up, I feel like a bird!
Grandma is waiting for us at the door of a building. "Joe, this is called a „pueblo'. The buildings are made from stones(石头)and earth(泥土)," she says.
Grandma and grandpa's rooms feel cool after standing under the hot sun. Grandma says that the stones keep the rooms cool. After dinner we take a walk outside.
I really like meeting the people here. One man helps me make an earth vase(花瓶)for Mom.
The children ask me to their ball games. Sometimes I help grandpa and his friends work on the farm.
I feel I am part of a big family in our village in the sky. It is hard to leave my grandparents when my two weeks are over.
John is thirteen now. He began to study in a middle school two years ago. His home is in a small village and it's nearly five kilometers from the school. He has to get up early in the morning.
After a quick breakfast he has to run to school and get there on time. His father hopes to borrow some money to buy a bike for him, but he knows his mother is always ill and his father spends much money on medicine. He doesn't agree with his father and keeps running there every day. Now he's very strong. He is never late for class and his teachers often praise him.
Last week there was a sports meeting in his school. John ran faster than any other boy and won the boy's 800 meters, 1, 500 meters and 3, 000 meters. The whole school knew him. He was very happy. He told his grandma about the good news as soon as he got home.
"I broke two school records(记录)today, Granny," called out the boy.
To his surprise, the old woman wasn't happy. She thought for a while and said, "I'm sorry to hear that. We have no money to pay for them, you know!"
Hi, David,
Guess what? I'm writing to you from Beijing! It's my first summer holiday abroad, and here I'm in China! I'm going to learn Chinese for two weeks at a summer camp. Then my parents are going to join me here. I plan to spend another two weeks here and go on a tour around the country with them. It's going to be very exciting! We're going to visit the Great Wall and the Palace Museum in Beijing. Then we're going to be in Xi'an from July 24th to 27th. My dad says he's going to take lots of photos of the Terracotta Warriors. After that, we're going to Jiuzhaigou. It's famous for its beautiful mountains and clear lakes. Our last stop on the trip is Sanya. My mum's going to spend lots of time on the beach, but I'm going to swim in the sea every day.
OK, I have to go. I'm going to meet my Chinese penfriend, Daming. He's going to take me to the Bird's Nest tonight. There's going to be a rock concert there. I can't wait!
Yours,
David

When I was a student in the middle school, I was a(害羞的)girl. Especially when the teacher asked me to speak in front of the class, I was so afraid of making a(错误). That's why I lost lots of(机会)to show myself and I was not very happy. What a(遗憾)!
But in fact, I was not a(粗心的)girl and I always try to do everything right. But now, I'm a student in the(大学), so I'm(改善)myself. I meet a good teacher Ms. Huang.
She always asks us to tell stories or show our ideas in class. It is very(令人放松的), so I decide to speak more often than(通常的). I believe that I won't(打败)myself any more in the future.
Our life(become) better and better. It is(real) different from that 20 years ago. Some people have a lot of money. They buy houses a swimming pool. They wear beautifully and look successful.(they) houses are larger and more comfortable. Their cars are bigger and(expensive) than the others'. Your family is not as rich as theirs. Your house is smaller theirs. But you don't need(care) about these. The most important thing for you to do is to work hard.
I think you(be) a successful man like them in 20 years if you work hard from now on.
You will have hobbies like taking photos and playing piano. You will take a trip if you have free time. And I believe when you get success, you will help(other) in the world, especially the people in the poor area.
Dear Ben,
I'm so glad you are interested in Chinese.
Welcome to Quzhou!
Yours,
Li Hua
