My friends and I joined a two-day survival(生存) training course in the mountains. The first day was really1—there was so much to do! Arriving at the campsite, we were divided into groups and given a tent, some food, a2and a compass(指南针). Standing next to a small river, Fanny3 camping in the grassy area nearby. However, our instructor, Mr.Lee, pointed out that it might flood(淹没) if it rained. In the end, we found a4area. Putting up the tent was very hard.5Mr.Lee helped us a lot.
By the time we had put up the tent,6was really hungry. "We wouldn't have got this hungry if we had brought some snacks." Peter said. We all told him to7complaining(抱怨) and help us start a fire to cook our food8. Realizing we were having trouble making the fire, he finally9.
The next day started early. Woken by a strange noise. Peter went to see what was 10.
"Some cows have eaten our breakfast!" he shouted. "That's all because you didn't11the food properly last night." said Mr. Lee.
Worried that Mr. Lee was angry with us, we tried very hard on our next12— using the map and compass to find a secret location. We made it to the location13the other group did.
We all felt very proud of14.
The survival training course was a great15. Now I feel I could survive anywhere!
Teenagers are known for being creative and full of new ideas. Let's have a look at these teenage inventions that might change the world.
Banana leaves usually go bad in two or three days. Tenith Adithyaa, a teenager from India, used UV to make the leaves stay fresh for a year. Tenith thinks that one day the leaves will be used for making plates, cups and other things.
David Cohen, an American teenager, built an earthworm(蚯蚓) robot. It is able to go into the smallest places, where humans or dogs can't go. It will be used for finding people in a fire or an earthquake.
Remya Jose, a 14-year-old from India, found it tiring and boring to handwash clothes in the nearby river. She reused some bicycle parts and created a washing machine that saves time, energy and keeps people fit at the same time.
Kenneth Shinozuku, a 15-year-old from New York, noticed that his grandfather who got Alzheimer's disease(老年痴呆) would often leave home and get lost. So he invented the wearable sensors(感应器) to help people find their family members like his grandfather. |
Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Many heroes are not even human, such as dogs, horses and cats. They are so brave and helpful that human beings are proud of them, too. Lucca, a 12-year-old dog, is a great animal hero. She is a retired US Marine Corps dog. On April 5, 2016 she received the Dickin Medal from PDSA in London, England. And PDSA will provide free medical care for the sick and wounded animals in need. The Dickin Medal was founded in 1943 by Maria Dickin.
The Medal is the highest prize for animals working in wars in the world.
Lucca is the first U.S. Marine Corps dog to receive the medal. As a search dog, Lucca's work was dangerous. She was trained to find hidden weapons and explosive devices. According to the US Marine Corps, Lucca protected the lives of thousands of soldiers, and no soldiers were killed while she was going around. She completed over 400 dangerous pieces of work during six years in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2012, she lost her front left leg in an explosion while working in Afghanistan.
Lucca is the 66th animal to receive the Dickin Medal. 30 dogs (including Lucca) have got the Medal as well as 32 World War II messenger pigeons, three horses and one cat.
Bananas are the perfect snack. Not only are they sweet and delicious, but they are easy to carry around, so you can take them anywhere. Best of all, bananas provide different things that the human body needs!
Bananas grow best in warm places that get lots of rain. They grow on plants that look like trees.
The banana plant, however, is considered a herb rather than a tree because it doesn't have a strong, woody stem(茎,干). The plants can grow as high as 30 feet. When they reach their full height, flowers grow out from the stem. These flowers produce bananas.
Two or three times each year, the plants produce fruit. The bananas grow together, which seem like "hands". A hand is made up of 10 to 20 bananas. Growers sometimes call bananas "fingers".
Each bunch(丛) of bananas has about 15 hands, and so a whole bunch may have as many as 200 bananas and can weigh more than 100 pounds.
After about three months, the bananas are ready to be picked. At this point, they still aren't the sunny yellow color of bananas. Farmers pick them when they're green. That's how they're shipped to stores. They turn yellow along the way and are ready to be sold.
If you love bananas, you've got a lot of company. Americans have been enjoying bananas since the first shipment arrived in the United States in 1876. Today, American eat more bananas than any other fruit. More bananas are sold than apples and grapes together. Every American eats over 26 pounds of bananas each year!
a. The bananas begin to turn yellow. b. A banana plant grows to full height.
c. The flowers produce bananas. d. The bananas are ready to be picked.
Miss Mitra didn't want to be a Sunday school teacher any longer. The students there were all rude and never listened to her. "I give up." She shouted at the students. "Cool." Rick said. He was the most impolite kid in this school. Two months later, Miss Betty Ray came to the school. She looked young. The students thought that she wouldn't stay very long.
"Have any of you ever been out of state?" She asked in a friendly tone. A few hands went up.
"Anyone has traveled to California?" One hand went up as the disrespectful(无礼的) laugh reduced.
"Anyone visited outside the country?" No hands went up now. The silent kids were puzzled.
Betty took a map of the world from her bag.
"What else do you have there? Lunch?" Someone cracked.
Betty smiled lightly and answered, "Cookies for later." "Cool," Rick quipped(困惑的).
Then she pointed at a place on the map, "I was born here, and I lived here until I was about your age."
"Is that Texas?" Someone asked.
"No. Quite a long way from here. It is Mumbai in India."
Betty fumbled again in her bag, this time pulling out some old wrinkled pictures along with a box of chocolate chip cookies. They passed the pictures around, viewing each with great interest.
The kids studied them as they bit into the sweets.
The hour quickly slid by as she told them her stories about faraway places and what the people were like there and how they lived.
"Wow, this is as exciting as TV!" One young girl told her.
Sunday after Sunday, Betty came to class, tying her lessons to their everyday lives. She told the kids how they could make a difference right now. The students grew to love her.
Betty taught that Sunday school class for thirty years. At last, her hair grew into a natural gray.
Every now and then, she received a letter from a former student. There was a doctor, a research scientist, a homemaker, a businessman, and many teachers among them. One day she pulled out a blue envelope from her mailbox. And there was a photo in it. Squinting her eyes, she smiled at the man in the photo, still seeing the boy in him. Standing in the rubble(瓦砾), in the city of Delhi, India, he came to help the homeless people in the earthquake. Some words were written in the upper part of the photo, "Because of you, I am here now."

Erin and Amy are best friends. Last month, they both had two weeks off(不工作). But they didn't know where to go for their holiday. After a long (讨论), they finally decided to travel to California. They are both (大自然的)world lovers, so they visited Redwood
Forests first. "The (天空)here is so blue and the redwoods are the tallest in the world.
Some are big enough around to drive a car (穿过). They are really a great wonder," Erin said. (在……之后)visiting Redwood Forests, they went to Los Angeles. First, they took a real studio tour. There they learned how movies were made. Then they went to see the (指示牌)"HOLLYWOOD". In fact, it can be seen from many places around Los Angeles.
People all want to see the actors' home if they go to Los Angeles. If they are (幸运的) enough, they might get some autographs(亲笔签名)and even some photos of them standing
(在……旁边)a movie star. Unluckily, (虽然)the guide took them on a tour past some actors' home and they (逗留)there for a long time, they didn't see any movie stars.
On the way back home, Amy said sadly, "Maybe the movie stars don't live there at all."
Dear Tom,
How are you? You said you would like to know about some places of interest in China. Let me tell you something about the Great Wall.
Welcome to China and enjoy it one day!

Moon cakes are the (popular) food during the Mid-Autumn Festival. We can see different (kind) of moon cakes in stores and in the markets as the festival comes. But do you know that people living south of the Yangtze River (follow) the tradition of eating pumpkins(南瓜) during the festival? In ancient times, poor families chose to eat pumpkins during the Mid-Autumn Festival because they couldn't to buy moon cakes. The tradition has been passed down, and it's believed that eating pumpkins on the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival can bring people good (healthy). interesting story says that a very poor family, a couple with their daughter, lived at the foot of the South Mountain. The old couple were (serious) ill for lack of food. The daughter found a strange melon(瓜) one day she was working in the fields near the mountain. She brought the melon home and (cook) for her parents.
Surprisingly, her parents recovered(恢复健康) eating the melon. Because the melon was picked near the South Mountain, it was named "south melon".
