A man asked his friends one evening, "What's the most beautiful 1in the world?" "The sound of bird 2?" one of his friends said.
"No, it's the sound of a piano." the 3one said. "No, no," the third said. "It's the sound of a guitar." The three friends 4. Soon they were shouting.
"Stop! Stop!" the man cried out. "You'll never 5each other this way. Come to dinner next week. I'll help you agree on what's the most beautiful sound in the world."
A week later, the man's three friends came to his house. They were looking forward to (期待) a good dinner, 6the table was empty. Time passed and still there was no 7.
At last, it was midnight. The man's friends were very 8 but they were too polite(礼貌的)to say 9. Then, as they were standing up to leave, they heard the "click, click" of dishes. A servant came in and put the dishes of food on the table.
Soon they were all enjoying a fine meal. "Tell me now." the man said 10with a smile, "What is the most beautiful sound in the world?" And this time they all gave the same answer.

Many people enjoy watching movies in a cinema. They think the cinema has a better atmosphere(气氛)to enjoy the movie. However, I think people are happier and freer when watching movies at home.
Watching movies at home is more comfortable. To watch movies in a cinema, you have to buy a ticket before you go there for a better seat. However, there is no need for people at home to worry about the ticket. They can enjoy movies at any time they like and with the most comfortable seat. What's more, people watching movies at home wouldn't have to face any traffic problems.
It is free to watch movies at home. In the cinema, we can't go outside and do something else because the movie won't wait for us. Sometimes, if we miss part of the movie, we can't follow the story. At home, we can pause at any time and go back to watch the part.
All in all, a cinema is a good place to watch movies, but it isn't the best place to enjoy the movies. I think watching movies at home is the better.
Do you have true friends? Do you want to know better between you and your friends? There are three different kinds of friends: "pest friends", "guest friends", and "best friends".
The first kind of friend is simply acquaintances (熟人), and all you usually know about them is their names. You may meet this kind of friend at school, at work, or on the bus, but you don't miss them when they're not around. When this kind of friend does something bad, you don't tell them. That is why they are called "pest friends".
The second kind of friend could also be called "social partners". They are closer than acquaintances, but not as close as true friends. You know their names, a little of what they like or dislike, and a little of their family histories; you usually have a few things in common, but you don't talk about anything deep(深), such as your wishes or fears(害怕), and they don't open up to you how they really feel.
The last kind of friend, the "best friend", is the one you know the deepest. You're like family, and know everything about each other. You have no problem staying at each other's houses, and you share your deepest feelings and thoughts. They will correct you when you're wrong, and though they may not be perfect(完美的), they at least will always care about you, and never do anything on purpose(故意地)to hurt you.
We all have our pest, guest, and best friends. We should value(重视)all friendships and remember, all best friends start out as just acquaintances.

Hi, Jane! I saw your name and address in Pen-friend magazine, and I would like (be) your pen-friend. First, I will tell you some things about (my). My name is Sidney. I'm fourteen years old. I'm about five (foot) tall. I have short black hair and brown eyes. My hobbies are playing computer games and playing chess.

I thought that must have been a joke. I saw the cleaning woman every day. She had dark hair. But how would I know her name?
I had never talked with her before. In fact, I'd never even thought about talking to her. I looked at my paper and started to feel rather guilty(内疚的) Before the test ended, one student asked if the question would be counted in our grades.
"Of course," the teacher said, " They are all important. They need your care, even if all you do is just to smile and say hello."
I have never forgotten that lesson. Everyone needs my care and I should get to know all of the people who work and live around me. That was, maybe, the most important lesson of my life. I also later learned that the cleaning woman's first name is Hannah.
A. She was short and about 50 years old. B. Finally, I finished my paper, leaving the last one unanswered. C. In your life, you will meet many people. D. I was a hard-working student and I did well in all subjects. |
