Many years ago, I was a very shy girl at my school. I couldn't forget the way I had frozen in front of the class. My hands had shaken so badly that I couldn't read my notes. My voice had become softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts had kindly stopped me, “Masha, I know you're shy, but you worked hard on this project. If I give you another chance tomorrow, can you find your courage?
I had nodded. I had kept my head down, hoping that the school day would end soon. When I got home that day, I could see an inviting light from the kitchen windows. Momma was backing. When Momma backed, I always watched and chatted with her. She said it was my company that made her baked goods taste so sweet.
Momma studied my face as I came into the kitchen. “What's wrong, Masha?” Tears shone in my eyes. I let the whole story out. Momma was silent for a moment. Then she said, “Let me show you something.”I followed Momma to her bedroom and carefully took out a blue ribbon that said “First Place” from it.
“I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. I won it for public speaking. It wasn't easy—I was not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”
That was the second time someone had told me that. I followed Momma back to the kitchen. What was it that made me so afraid? Soon Momma's sweet cake rose in the pans, and the smell of it comforted me as I wondered where I would find my courage. Momma put a thick piece in front of me. “ There's nothing better for heartache than Momma's love baked in a cake.”
I raised a forkful of warm cake to my mouth. All the fear in the world could not take away Momma's love. I felt safe in Momma's kitchen. It was warm from the bottom of the heart.
The next day I walked to the front of the classroom to give my presentation again. As I faced the class, I remember the ribbon and the smell of Momma's kitchen and then took a deep breath and began to speak with confidence. Finally I succeeded.
With the development of the Internet, many people use it very often, including some teenagers. But many parents are worried about that their children may meet with something unhealthy online. To solve this problem, a new search engine for children named Kiddle has appeared.
Search results are filtered, so only safe website are shown and descriptions are written in simple language. Searches with bad words are shut off, too. Kiddles uses the same color as Google in its logo and a similar design on its homepage, too— with an extra robot picture. The top three Kiddle research show safe websites and pages written specially for kids and those websites and pages are well chosen and checked by Kiddle developers. The fourth to seventh results will be safe and trusted websites that are not written for adults. They provide expert content, but are harder for kids to understand.
Unlike on Google, most results appear along with large thumbnail pictures(缩略图) to make it easier for children to find what they are looking for. For example, when you search for “meow meow”. Google produces pages for information about a drug(毒品),but Kiddle lists information only about cats. The company explained, “Websites which appear in Kiddle search results satisfy family–friendly requirements, as we filter websites with unhealthy content.”
Teens are getting heavy today. A recent research shows 97% of teens need more exercise. So exercise helps your body and mind. And teens should also change the life and be more active at any point. An article called How to Limit Screen Time and Get Moving gives following ideas:
. Find a friend or family member to exercise or play with you. You will have more fun and it helps keep you responsible for going.
. Find a sport you like. It doesn't need to be traditional sports of basketball, soccer, or baseball. However, you can also try hiking, skateboarding or even rope jumping. If you enjoy the sport, you will do it.
. An hour a day can seem like a long time. Start with 10 minutes of new activities every day. Add more as you get stronger. Think about walking. Take the stairs instead of the lift. You will feel healthier.
. Help your family shop for healthy food. Look for healthy foods. Eat lots of fruits and vegetable. Stop buying soft drinks and junk food. You will feel better if you eat right.
. Doctors call watching TV or playing video games screen time. You should have no more than two hours of screen time a day. You will enjoy life more if you live it instead of watching it!
A.Step away from the screen B.Start slowly C.Make fitness fun D.Control your weight E.Choose food carefully F.Exercise with others |
It was my first year of teaching, and I was sad. I could not get my middle school students to sit down and pay 1 . I felt frustrated (沮丧). I couldn't get them to remember what I had just 2 the day before; yet, they could3 remember every word of the new rap (说唱) song on the radio. They would come in each day singing rap songs.
And then, it hit me, instead of 4 their radios, I needed to offer them a diffferent teaching way. I went home, and 5a rap song about the math we were learning at the time, called “ The Itty- Bitty Dot”. I 6 it all night. Early the next moning, when it was my class, I performed it for them.
The results were very 7 .The students laughed hysterically( 歇斯底里地 ). Not only were they not paying attention, but also they were 8 at me. I felt like a big loser. Later that day, I went to lunch with slow heavy steps. 9 as I walked by the lunch tables, I heard the students singing my song! My 10was all gone.
The next day, they excitedly ran into my classroom , saying things like, “Mr. Kajitani, are you going to rap again? Yesterday was the 11day in the math class! Are you going to be on MTV?” From that moment on, everything 12. I had connected with my students on their 13 , using the language they understood. I got them 14 to come to school, to learn ,and to regard me as their teacher. Their behavior improved greatly, and their test 15 began to improve.
