One year ago, I worked at a Chinese medicine store. Every day we mixed herbs (草药) for patients, so the store was always full of 1
Every day when I worked there, I found a boy of i3 or 14 sitting on the stair outside the store for minutes. I didn't know why he did this.
"Do you like herbal smell?" I asked him one day.
"I 2 with this kind of smell," he said. He told me that his mother 3 for years, so he could mix herbs for his mother when he was very young. He mixed herbs4 , hoping his mother would get better as soon as possible.
"Is your mother well now?" I asked. He shook his head, "My mother died three months ago." Looking up into the sky, he said, "When I first walked past and smelled the herbs, I thought of 5 and those days when she was alive. That's the reason why I come here every day and sit for minutes."
One day, I didn't have anything to do. I was 1. I just stood in front of my house, looking down the street. After a while, Johnny, known as a bad kid, appeared.
He came to me and said, "Could you go to the store with me?" For some reason, I 2. We went to the Store. When we left, he said, "Look what I have." He 3 two chocolates and put one in my hand. Just then, the shop assistant came out. Johnny 4, but I stayed. I knew I was in trouble.
That night my grandfather said, "One of the most important decisions you make in your life is 5 you call your friends." Then he told me a story.
There was once a scorpion (蝎子) and a frog on an island. One day, there was a fire. The frog knew he had to6 the island. As he was about to jump into the water, the scorpion said, "Please let me ride on your back. I can't 7 ."
The frog said, "No. You'll sting (蛰) me!"
"If I did that, we'd die!" said the scorpion.
The frog thought about this and agreed. However, the scorpion stung the frog when they were in the water. The frog tried to swim, but he 8 continue. "Why did you do that? Now we'll9 !" he cried out. The scorpion replied, "Because I am a scorpion."
When my grandfather finished telling the story, he asked, "Do you understand she 10of the story?" I nodded.
Arctic fox ( 北极狐 ) is a kind of small fox that lives in the arctic. It grows about 50 centimeters long, not including its tail, 30 centimeters tall and weighs from 3 to 7 kilos.
The Arctic foxes are white or blue in color. The white ones are white in winter, but gray-brown in summer. The blue ones are blue-gray all year round. The Arctic foxes have long, thick hair that is called fur. And the long fur covers their whole bodies, including both their cat eyes and rabbit feet, to keep them warm in the low temperature in the Arctic.
The Arctic foxes feed mainly on birds, birds' eggs and other small animals. Teamwork is the way they look for food, and they don't like to do that alone.
Baby Arctic foxes are very lovely. They don't open their eyes until a week after their birth. For the first half of the year, their parents offer them food. They begin to look for food on their own when they are about six months old. The next year they can live alone.
Today, the number of the Arctic foxes is becoming smaller and smaller, because people kill them for their fur to make beautiful coats for money. Something must be done to protect the Arctic foxes.

I work 50 hours a week as a taxi driver, so I talk to people all day. They understand me, but I know I make a lot of mistakes. My vocabulary is strong. Grammar is my problem. For example, I don't use the past tense. I always say, "I drive him to the office this morning" instead of "I drove him to he office this morning". I'm trying to change. I've found some websites for learning English grammar. I hope they will be useful.

I'm teaching myself English, and I'm good at grammar. However, it's really difficult for me to find chances to speak English. I live in an area where everyone speaks my language: Spanish. Can you give me some advice?

I understand the grammar and the reading materials in my class and my writing is good. But I'm very nervous when I speak English. I don't want to make any mistakes because people will think that I'm stupid. Also, my pronunciation isn't good. When I speak, people often say, "What? Say that again."

I have been in the United States for one year. I'm studying hard and I'm good at grammar, but my vocabulary is a problem. When I listen, I don't understand many of the words. When I try to read, there are always three or four new words in every Sentence. I feel down.

On my recent trip to Sydney with my parents, we visited the Wildlife Park.
The Wildlife Park has lots of different animals and birds. Some are native to Australia and can only be found there. There are over 600 animals there, including kangaroos, koalas and crocodiles (鳄鱼). They are kept in their natural environment. I like the Wildlife Park better than a zoo where most of the animals are in cages.
We first spent some time with the kangaroos. We were allowed to touch and feed them. It was very exciting to be so close to them. There were koalas there too. They looked very cute. Although we were not allowed to carry them, I got to take a photo with one. It is a wonderful souvenir of my holiday in Sydney.
The Wildlife Park has plenty of freshwater and saltwater crocodiles. Some of them are really big and scary with huge teeth! I did not want to get too close to them.
There was also a bird shove. The keepers showed us different species they had. I saw an old parrot which could "talk". It made a great impression on me.
I enjoyed the trip very much. There was so much to see.
—To a the rush hour.

No matter what you want to do in your life, you'll need an education first. You make your own . If you want to be a doctor, a teacher, or a police officer? You need a good education. And what you're learning in school today will your careers in the future. You will meet with many on the way to success.
The truth is that being successful is hard. Some of the most successful people in the world are the who have had the most failures. For example, the first book of J.K. Rowling, the of Harry Potter, was refused 12 times before it was published. Michael
Jordan was once kicked off his high school basketball team. He hundreds of games and thousands of shots during his career. But he said, "I have failed over and over again in my life. But that's why I."
So if you get a bad grade, that doesn't mean you're stupid. .you need to spend more time studying.
I expect you to put your best effort into everything you do. So don't let us down. More importantly, don't let down.
While the rest of the city is crowded and noisy, several old men are sitting in their ancient hutong, drinking tea and playing chess. .
Beijing hutongs have a very special place in the rich history of Beijing. .
According to experts, the word hutong comes from the Mongolian language, meaning "well( 井 )". In ancient times, people preferred to gather and live around wells. There are other explanations, too. No matter what hutong exactly means, it is commonly agreed that hutongs first appeared in Beijing during the Yuan Dynasty.
. Nobody knows exactly how many hutongs there are in Beijing today. .
A. While visiting them, you can get a feel of its traditional lifestyle and culture. B. Beijing hutong is so famous that people from all over the world go to visit it. C. This is a typical day in a Beijing hutong. D. So the original meaning of hutong should be "a place where people gather and live." E. But one thing is for sure, if we connected all the hutongs together, it would even be longer than the Great Wall! F. In the Yuan Dynasty, there were about 29 hutongs. |
With the Chinese language becoming more and more popular, the UK government planned to help more kids learn Chinese, Do you think it is necessary for British pupils to learn Chinese? Three people from different countries have given their opinions.
Robert (Canada)
I studied French for 2 years in high school and German for 4 years in college. I studied Chinese for about 4 months before moving to China. Since I speak Chinese every day, my writing, reading and listening are quite good. I think learning other languages is a great thing. It offers a new and different way of living and looking at our life and the world around us.
Ted (the UK)
Learning any language can be valuable, but it is not suitable for everyone. Chinese is a difficult language to learn, and the UK is not good at teaching foreign languages. However, China is a very large and developing market for business people. For them, Chinese is worth learning.
Larry (the USA)
I don't think Chinese will be as widely spoken throughout the world as English. It is too time-consuming ( 费时的) to learn as a second language. To learn Chinese, you have to devote yourself to learning how to write and read it. It's too difficult to learn Chinese. But some day Chinese will become more popular, and that is a good thing.
Different people have different opinions. As for me, being able to speak more than just your native language is a great thing.
