Can you write down Chinese characters(汉字) that are read to you? It can be , especially when the Chinese characters are not included in most dictionaries.
Lu Jialei, a student from Hangzhou Foreign Language School, the Chinese Character dictation(听写)Competition on Oct. 18, 2013.
During the competition, the host read Chinese characters to the student, their meanings and gave example sentences. The student was required to write down the Chinese characters.
Winning the competition was a(n) to Lu. "I am not the smartest one," she said. "But I pay attention to details(细节)."
To prepare for the , Lu and her teammates studied the Modern Chinese for 10days. She had a secret wepon(武器).She studied how Chinese characters were formed.
In the final round of the competiton, the host read wanluan to Lu and said it graceful(优雅的). "I had never heard that before!" said Lu. But she made a good guess. "Chinese characters meaning graceful often have '女' in , while many Chinese characters pronouncing luan have '亦'. So I wrote it down: '婉娈'."
Lu has good reading habits. "When others pay attention to the main idea of a(n) , she looks at how the author uses words and sentences to express himself or herself," said Su Yunsheng, Lu's Chinese teacher.
Su is happy to see like Lu find the beauty of Chinese language. "Learning to write Chinese characters is an important part of inheriting(继承)culture," said Su.
John was born without arms. As a child, he learned to do many things with his legs. But there were a lot of things he couldn't do. His parents even had to feed him. His seven brothers had to help him to get dressed.
One day his mom decided not to help John anymore. She told John's brothers not to help him either. "Let John do everything on his own," she said. "If John needs to eat, let him eat by himself. Let him get the dish himself. If he breaks up a few dishes, it's fine. No one will help him to get dressed either. Let him wear his clothes himself. If he can't get dressed himself, then let him run without clothes. But no one is allowed to help him. He has to learn to do everything himself."
John's mother loved him. She wanted to help him. But if she always helped him, he wouldn't learn anything. She wanted him to be independent.
Soon John learned to do everything by himself. When he was sixteen, he could even drive a car with his feet. John felt very proud. He thanked his mother for making him independent.
Today John is a grown-up man. He has a business of his own and he is very successful. He also travels around the world.
John likes children very much. He likes to talk and play with them. He tells them that they can learn to do anything. He teaches them how to be independent.

Every 30 seconds there is an earthquake. But don't worry because most are so weak that they cannot be felt. Only a few big ones hurt people.
Many earthquakes happened in China, such as the big one in Sichuan in 2008. Thousands of people died in it. So it's important to know what to do when one hits. Here are some tips on how to stay safe in an earthquake.
⒈If you are indoors during an earthquake, hide under a desk. Stay away from windows and anything that could fall on you.
⒉If you are outdoors, move to a clear place. Try to be away from trees, signs, buildings and streetlights. These could fall on you.
⒊If you are in a shop and far from the door, don't try to run outside and rush for exit. Everyone will be doing that and you'll find it hard getting out. Don't get into a lift during an earthquake. Just hide under some strong cover near you.
⒋When an earthquake has ended, be careful because aftershocks may still happen. These are just as dangerous as the earthquake itself. So stay under the desk until you make sure it's safe to get up.
⒌If you are at home and you smell gas(煤气), open the windows and get out of the building as quickly as you can. A gas line in your house may be broken. This could be very dangerous.
Young people and old people do not always agree with each other. They sometimes have different ideas about living, working and playing. But in one program in New York State, adults and teenagers live together in a friendly way.
Each summer 200 teenagers and 50 adults are invited to join the program. They live together for eight weeks as members of a special work group. Everyone works for seven hours a day. They do so not only to keep busy, but also to find meaning and happiness in work. Some teenagers work in the woods or on the farms near the village. Some of them learn to make things like tables, chairs and something like that and to build houses. It is the adults who teach them to do those.
There are a few free hours each day and weekends are free, too. During the free hours some of the teenagers learn to take photos or paint pictures, others sit around and talk, sing or dance. Each teenagers has its own way to spend his free time.
When people live together, rules are necessary. In this program the teenagers and the adults make the rules together. If someone breaks a rule, the problem goes before the whole group. They talk about it and ask, "What should we do about it?"
One of the teenagers talks about his experience, "You stop thinking only about yourself. You learn to think about the group."
Almost everybody likes to play. All over the world men and women, boys and girls enjoy sports. They help people to live happily.
People play different games in winters and summers. Sailing is fun in warm weather, but skating is good in winter.
The Arabs are famous for their horses and camels. They use them in their work, and they use them in their sports events, too. -but millions of people hunt and fish for a living.
but after a game on the sports field, they often become good friends. Sports help to train a person's character. One learns to fight fair and hard, to win without pride and to lose with grace(体面).
