An old man walked slowly into a restaurant with his cane (拐杖). His old jacket and worn-out shoes made him very different from others. 1 talked to him except a young waitress. Mary watched him move towards a seat by the window. She ran over to him and helped him 2. Then she put his cane against the table 3 he could reach it. Without saying a word, he smiled and nodded a thank-you.
After the old man finished a good meal, Mary brought him the 4. After he put the money in his pocket, she handed him his cane and the old man walked to the front door5 with the help of the girl. Holding the door open for him, Mary said, "Come back and see us, sir!" The old man 6her with a smile and agreed.
When Mary went to clean his table, she was7 . Under the plate, she found a business card, a 100—dollar bill and a 8which read, "Dear Mary, I respect you very much, and you respect yourself, too. It is shown by the way you treat others. You have 9the secret of happiness."
In fact, the old man was the owner of the restaurant. That was the 10time that Mary or any of his workers had seen him.
Dear Dad,
Today I was at the shopping center and I spent a lot of time reading the Father's Day cards. But as I chose and read, and chose and read again, it seemed that not a single card said what I really want to say to you.
You'll soon be 84 years old, Dad, and you and I will have had 56 Father's Days together. I didn't think that you were too old. But the sad thing happened last week. I watched as you turned at the corner in your car. I didn't realize at once that it was you because the man who was driving looked so elderly.
Fifty years ago this spring, we planted carrots together in a garden in Charles City, Iowa. This week, we'll plant carrots together again, perhaps for the last time but I hope not. I don't understand why planting carrots with you is so important to me. Well, I don't quite know how to tell you this, Dad... I don't like carrots... but I like planting them with you.
I guess what I'm trying to say, Dad, is what every son and daughter wants to say to their dad today. Praising a father on Father's Day is about more than a dad who brings home money or shares a dinner. It's more about a dad deeply loving children who know everything and won't listen to anyone. It's about sharing. It's about loving someone more than words can say, and I wish that it would never end.
Love,
Jenny
There is a lake near a forest in Sweden. The water in the lake is very clear and everything is quiet and still. On the far side of the water is some farmland, and further away, across the field, is an old church built on a hill. It has just stopped raining. The lake is full and there is still some half-melted snow from last winter on the ground.
The reason the water is so clear, and everything is so quiet and still, is that most of the plants and animal life in and around the lake is dead. There are no birds because all the fish and insects, which the birds need for food, have disappeared. Many trees in the forest are losing their leaves and bark (树皮). They are sick and dying. Others were blown down by the high winds of last winter.
A farmer is working in a field planting something, something stronger enough to fight against pollution. They farmers live a hard life here, because the plant will be between 25% to 40% lower than a few years ago. The stone of the old church tower are turning to powder (灰,粉末)and unless the tower is repaired soon, it will fall down.
All the death and destruction in this place is caused by the smoke coming out of factories and gases from cars and trucks. And yet this silent lake is hundreds of kilometers away from the nearest factory and highway.

Jia Meng used to keep a diary in Chinese. But one year ago, the 14-year-old girl from Heilongjiang began to write her diaries in English, because Jia found her mother was reading her diary secretly. She changed the language because her mother can't read English. "It's like killing two birds with one stone," said Jia. "My privacy(隐私) becomes safe and my English improves a lot."
Jia's mother is not the only mom who reads her child's diary. Recently, Renmin University of China had a national survey among over 2,300 parents. The results show that about 40% of parents read their children's secrets.
That's why many teenagers try to find ways to protect their privacy.
Wu Lei, 15, from Shanxi, keeps a diary, too. But he doesn't write it on paper. He writes online, which he thinks is perfectly safe because his parents "know nothing about the Internet".
Lu Huan, 13, from Guangdong, said her parents always secretly listened to the talk between her friends and her on the telephone in their room. To solve this problem, Lu asked her parents to buy her a cell phone.
"Parents want to know what is going on in their children's lives," said Shao Xiaozhen, a teenage expert in Beijing. "But sometimes they go about it the wrong way." Shao suggested the teenagers that instead of hiding their secrets, talking with parents is a better solution. "If your parents know that you are safe, they'll let you keep your secrets."
