Chinese are very generous (慷慨的) when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the 1, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad-to England, the USA or Australia. The Chinese 2 that the more expensive the education is, the better it is. 3 parents will spend a lot of money on their children's education. Even 4 parents will buy a computer for their son or daughter. Though they're not rich, they would rather pay for the education.
Parents can 5 that their children's skills are different, skilled (有技能的) in some areas while poor in others. But most 6 fail to realize that the children today need more self-confidence.
The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to 7 tests and how to study well, but they are not teaching them the most important skills that they need. And these skills are important to help them to be 8, happy and clever.
Parents can achieve this 9 teaching their children the skills like cooking or doing other housework.
Teaching a child to cook will 10 many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking needs patience and time. It is an interesting but difficult experience. A good cook 11 tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish 12 job successfully. His result, a well - cooked dinner, will make him 13 good and give him a lot of self-confidence.
Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play 14, will make him interested and want to know more. He will spend hours studying them and trying to fix them. Your child might become an engineer when he 15. These activities are teaching a child not only to study at school, but also to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.
Just like a car engine needs petrol(汽油), your body needs fuel(燃料;养料). It needs food!
The things you eat and drink are turned into energy. You need energy for everything—playing, walking, running, thinking—even sleeping. Feeling hungry may mean you are running low on energy. If it is not mealtime, you may need a snack to re-fuel.
But what sort of snack should you eat? This is like choosing the right fuel for a car. Some cars, such as racing cars, need the best fuel to go fast and keep their engines running smoothly.
So, if you want to be at your most lively, choose the best fuel. This means eating healthy snacks. There is no better way to keep your engine running smoothly!
When did you last say "I love you" to your father? If you can't remember, then you can get the chance this Father's Day on June 18.
Generally compared to a mother's gentle love, a father represents (代表) qualities like independence (独立), confidence, courage and adventure.
Also, a caring father can help their children get along with others, according to a study on Live Science. Fathers not only lead their children into their social circle but also teach them how to act and control their feelings.
For example, Microsoft founder Bill Gates was quiet and didn't like to talk with others when he was a little kid. So his father often held family parties and let Bill play games with family members. "Games like soccer and swimming seemed to be silly at that time but they improved my ability of leading and cooperating(合作)," Gates once said in an interview with US Fortune magazine.
US actor Will Smith learned important lessons from small things taught by his father. His father once planned to pull down a wall of their shop and rebuild it. But little Will thought it was impossible. After a year and a half, they did it. "You don't try to build a wall. You are going to lay a brick (砖) every day. And soon you have a wall," he said on TV show Charlie Rose (《查理·罗斯访谈录》).
"One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters," British poet George Herbert (1593-1632) once said. Do you agree?
Here is a story: A man sees a butterfly (蝴蝶). The butterfly tries to get out of its chrysalis (蛹). Feeling sorry for it, the man decides to help. He cuts the chrysalis and the butterfly comes out easily. Surprisingly enough, the butterfly is unable to fly. If the butterfly doesn't struggle (挣扎;奋斗) to leave the chrysalis, it can't fly! The struggle develops the energy in the butterfly which makes it fly. Similarly, the challenges of life bring out the best in young people and make the fly.
When people are young, meeting and overcoming challenges will make them strong and ready to face life. When we look at successful people, we see that the most successful of them are people who have had to struggle. One famous businessman, who now owns many big supermarkets, used to carry clothes on his back and sell them from door to door when he was young. Another successful man is Dennis. His father died when he was only twenty. His father's death forced him to mature fast. He had to bring up a family of nine people. He took up the challenges and overcame them. Today his brothers and sisters are leading successful lives.
Sometimes challenges do not appear to us because we keep away from them. So some parents and teachers actively encourage young people to face challenges. They might organize some activities for young people which provide them with challenges, like rock-climbing, camping, volunteer work and so on. However, just passing exams will not prepare a person for life. We must meet and overcome challenges. The young people of today will become the leaders of tomorrow. For countries to continue to become successful, it is important that the young people learn to meet challenges and overcome them.
Teenage life — better now, or in the past?
Does this situation sound familiar (熟悉)?
You are complaining (抱怨) to your parents about something. Maybe your computer isn't powerful enough to play the latest games. Then you hear…
When I was your age, there weren't any computers or video games. And I didn't get a bike until I was sixteen. And it was second-hand.
So, is it really true that life is better for teenagers now? It is certainly true that many teenagers have got more things nowadays. So parents have got more money to spend on each child. And many things are cheaper than they were when our parents were children.
Forty years ago, no one could imagine a world with tiny computers and amazing smart phones. And now these things are necessary — we can't imagine living without them!
However, technology often means we spend more time at home. And often it is just us with our computer or television. Teenagers don't do enough exercise. And, although young people still get on well with their friends, some people think teenagers today don't have so many social activities as they did in the past.
What do you think? How is teenage life better these days?
A. And it was too big for me. B. A typical family is smaller now. C. Or your friends' bikes are better than yours! D. So they aren't as healthy as they were in the past. E. Technology is probably the greatest change in our life. |
I remember we went bike together last fall when he you.

Do you often throw away things you don't need anymore? Have you ever thought about how these things can actually be put to good use? Nothing is a waste if you have a mind.
You have probably never heard of Amy Hayes, but she is a most woman. She lives in a house in the UK that she built herself out of rubbish. The windows and doors come from old buildings around her town that were pulled down. The top of the house is an old boat upside down. And the gate in front of her house is made of rocks and old glass bottles. Amy recently won a prize the Help Save Our Planet . The president said, "Amy is an inspiration to us all."
Amy isn't the only one who is good at . Jessica Wong from Hong Kong uses old clothes that people don't wear anymore to make bags. She has been this for a few years now. She opened a small shop where she sells her bags, and she has set up a website to sell them online. She likes to use old jeans to make handbags. Her bags are cute and . "I plan to write a book about new ways to use old clothes," she said. "I hope people can read my book and enjoy it!"
