There is always a problem. When it comes to shopping, my mother and I have alwayson what fits me well. To me, if it zips(拉上或拉开拉链), it fits. My mom, however, usually tells me I need a bigger size.
When I was a teenager, I wanted to dress like my friends, but my body size made it. When mom told me something didn't suit me, I needed a bigger size, all I heard was that I was fat.
To avoid arguments, we stopped going shopping together. This continuedI got engaged(订婚)last year and needed to buy some clothes. When Ion a blouse, my mother looked at me, and I knew what was coming, "You need a bigger size."
I tried to hold back my tears(眼泪). Maybe I could buy it alone, but my mom is my favorite person to with. The idea of looking for a wedding dressher seemed so scary to me.
And so the day came. As I tried on a simple white dress, I saw tears in my mom's eyes. "You look beautiful!" she told me. could have shocked me more.
This one didn't zip up and I did actually need a bigger size, but my mother told me how beautiful I looked. In that moment, all the arguments in the past. We didn't buy athat day. We decided to see more.
A few weeks later, we found the perfect dress. We both loved it as soon as I put it on. Then I also found the perfect fit for our shopping relationship.
Coffee and tea are two of the most popular hot drinks. Coffee is very popular in Western Europe and in the Middle East. Different people drink coffee differently. Some people in Northern Europe put cream and sugar in their coffee. But in the United States many people like to drink their coffee "black ", that is, without cream or sugar. Some oriental(东方的)countries such as China, Japan, traditionally drink tea as a national drink. In the Orient, people drink tea without sugar, but in England, where it is also a national drink, it is different. Many people in England put both sugar and hot or cold milk in their tea, while others use lemon. Coffee may also be done differently when it is ordered by the customers, the waiter may ask "regular", which means" Do you want lots of cream in it?" If coffee with lots of cream is not wanted, ask for "black" (no cream)or "dark"(meaning with a small amount of cream in). However, in most cases you may have your own choice by being provided with coffee and cream separately.
Coffee is the most popular American drink and it is ordered almost at all hours of the day. In the light of statistics(数据), Americans drink 500 million cups of coffee each day.
A. Buy local products. B. Use fewer chemicals. C. Drive and fly less often. D. Use less electricity. E. Save water at home. |
⑴ Taking measures(措施)to use less water is something you can start doing right away. If you live in an area with a water shortage, this is even more important for the environment.
⑵ Chemicals are used to wash our bodies, homes, cars and everything else, and end up in the water supply. Chemicals are doing real harm to water.
⑶ Coal and natural gas are the most common sources of energy that can be turned into electricity. The burning of these things is a main cause in world air pollution. Reducing your reliance(依赖)on electricity is a great way to play a part in saving the planet.
⑷ If you can drive and fly less often, you'll do a lot to help save the planet.
⑸ You don't have to travel far to get what you need. Making smart choices about where your food, clothes and other products come from can help make a difference to the environment.
Everybody gets stressed from time to time. Different people feel stressed in different ways. Some ways of dealing with stress-like screaming or hitting someone-don't solve much. But other ways, like talking to someone you trust, or even a beloved pet, can lead you to solving your problem or at least feeling better.
Try taking these four steps the next time you are stressed:
Get support. When you need help, talk to a trusted person, such as a parent or a friend. They might have had similar problems, such as dealing with a test, or the death of a lovely pet.
Don't take it out on yourself(拿自己出气). Remember that there are always people to help you. Don't take it out on yourself. Ask for a helping hand to get you through the tough(倒霉的)situation.
Try to solve the problem. After you're calm and you have support from adults and friends, it's time to get down to business. You need to figure out what the problem is. Even if you can't solve it all, you can solve a piece of it.
Be positive. Most stress is temporary(暂时的). If you can stay positive as you make your way through a tough time, you'll help yourself feel better even faster.
These steps aren't magic, but they do work. Ah, it feels so good when the stress is gone.
Parents do a lot of work around the house to keep things clean and tidy. If you want to pay them back, try to help out with the chores around the house.
Always clean your room. Make sure to put the rubbish in the right place. Make your bed and fold your clothes to keep them tidy. Get them off the floor and find some places to put them away.
Help around the house. Before the meal, help your parents to set the table. Be careful not to hurt yourself when doing the chores. Cleaning the floor is also important after a meal. .
Take care of the pet in your family. Sometimes your parents might keep a pet. It's a good idea to help them to care for it. Like you, a pet needs to eat well every day. So make sure to feed it on time. And remember to clean the pet's room often. . If possible, take the pet' for a walk sometimes.
A. Pick up books and toys in your room, too.
B. Finally, don't forget about an easy chore-taking out the rubbish.
C. In fact, there are lots of things to do in your own room.
D. The pet is part of your family, so spend some time playing with it.
E. After the meal, do the dishes and then make sure to put them away.
What homework did you do in the holiday? Now homework is not simply about exercises. It can be survey, practice and even work experiences. Here's three students' homework.
Sam bought 10 kinds of snacks. Then he checked their instructions and wrote down the amount of sugar and fat in the snacks. He was doing his biology(生物学)homework. "We are told it is not good to eat too many snacks. They have high calories(卡路里). But we don't care about it, "he said. Sam spent three days studying the instructions. He realized it was true.
With some plasticine(橡皮泥), glass balls, a ping-pong ball and a piece of paper, could you make a tumbler(不倒翁)?This is the physics homework of Mary. "Next term, we will learn about the center of gravity(重心). This homework made me more interested in physics, "she said.
Lisa worked as a guide in the local museum. She got a guide book from the museum, but she still did a survey and added more information to her introduction. She worked three hours a day and had no time to take a break. But she felt it was a meaningful experience. "My communication skills have improved, "she said.

Kyra Komac, 28 years old, now has 25 furniture(家具)stores all over the country. The new store, in London's Camden High Street, takes her back to where it all started. She tells us about how the business began.
"When I was little, my mother began selling flowers in Camden Market. She couldn't leave me at home on my own, so I had to go to the market with her. To begin with, I didn't have to do anything. I just sat there, and my mum told me jokes and stories so I didn't get bored. When I got older, I gave my mum a hand and I really enjoyed it."
"Then, one year, my grandma gave me a book for Christmas. It was all about making candles and I loved it. I was 14, and I didn't have to go to the market anymore because Mum could leave me at home on my own. I spent my free time making candles of all shapes and sizes. I made hundreds of them."
"One day, my mother was ill so I had to go to the market on my own. I decided to take some candles with me and see if I could sell them. They were sold out in twenty minutes! The next week, my mum gave me some money to buy some wax(蜡)to make more candles. They were sold out really quickly, too."
"Nine months later, we decided to stop selling flowers. My mum and I couldn't make enough candles during the week, so some of my school friends started to give us a hand. I paid them one pound for every candle, and we used to sell them for three or four times. It was fun and my friends worked with me in the market."
"At the age of 22, my uncle lent me some money and I opened my first shop in Portobello Road. Since then, I've never looked back, even in difficulties. In the first store, we only sold candles, but now we sell everything from furniture to paintings. Oh, and candles,of course."
