Would you like to take a trip if you could not use your cellphone during it? Not even a camera? A new travel company called Off the Grid is asking 1 to do just that.
"When you're somewhere2, there's a lot to hear, a lot to see, a lot of cool, interesting people to meet," Beattie said. "Your phone can distract(使分心) you. You may not be 3 enjoying the trip." The cellphone ban will not be forced(强迫) upon the customers. "We want it to be a volunteer," Beattie said. "We're not collecting phones…" Travelers will be able to use a simple cell phone with useful 4 phone numbers. Off the Grid travelers are not allowed to bring usual 5 to take photos. But the company also has a photographer to take pictures during the tour. 6 the trip is over, travelers can post the photos on social media(媒体). "I think it's interesting and challenging(挑战的) to say, Can I enjoy this moment 7 a camera? Can I have this memory be part of me without sharing with someone else at once?"
The company's first trip is to Lisbon, Portugal, in July. The 7-to-10-day tours are for small groups, no more than 16 people. Trip 8 begin at $1,500. The cost includes stays in hotels, some meals and ground transportation. It does not include air tickets. Off the Grid prefers special experiences rather than 9 sightseeing (观光). The trips include at least three activities and two social events. The Lisbon trip, for example, includes surfing lessons, exercise by the sea, a day of boating and dinner with a local 10. Beattie says he doesn't want the travelers to be too busy going from one place to another.

I was driving after school on Monday from Dublin to Drogheda and on my way home, I saw a wallet lying on the roadside. I thought the wallet must belong to the driver in front of me, because he had smoked there. I shouted to him twice but he didn't hear. So I stopped and picked up the wallet. I checked the wallet to see if I could get any phone number to call. I found and called two numbers but I was told they were wrong numbers.
Later, I found a driving license and decided to drive to his house in Termonfeckin according to the address on the license. It is a 30-minute drive away from Drogheda. When I got to his house, I saw his wife and the first thing she asked was if I had found a wallet. I started smiling and said yes. The lady was really happy and called her husband. He ran to us at the gate and welcomed me to their house. After giving the wallet to him, he checked to see whether everything was inside. They offered me 20 dollars for gasoline(汽油) but I refused.
How funny would it be to see memes(表情包) in our textbooks? Fourteen high school students from Sichuan Province have made this a reality.
They wrote a set of creative textbooks that includes five subjects: Chinese, English, Maths, Chemistry and Physics. They share their notes and experiences to help you prepare for high school entrance exams. You can see funny memes almost everywhere in their textbooks. The language they use is not too serious.
Each textbook has its own highlights(亮点), too. The English textbook introduces tongue twisters(绕口令), movies and TV series. The chemistry textbook has wuxia characters. There is a boy named Shangguan Huaxue(chemistry) in the book. He meets a girl and they learn chemistry together. It has ancient poems and wuxia-style descriptions.
Yan Zuhuai, 15, a top student from Chengdu No.7 High School, is the textbooks' editor-in-chef. He got the idea to create the books in June. "Many underclassmen wanted me to share my notes with them. When I saw people sharing bikes, I thought, why not share knowledge as well?" Yan said.
But when he put all of his notes together, he found that they were boring. Realizing that his classmates enjoy online novels and memes, he decided to add these things. He wrote guidelines and samples for each textbook and invited 13 students to join him in creating them.
Their first drafts(草稿) came out in August. Students and teachers praised them. But Yan felt the books needed to be improved. In October, he and his team learned how to use the design software to improve the books. The final version(版本) will come out at the end of December. About 2,500 people have preordered (预订) them. Many publishing houses have shown great interest in them.
Datong is one of China's 24 famous historic and cultural cities. Although I had only three days to travel in this city, the beautiful places still made my trip happy and exciting.
So on the first day, in the morning, I visited Yungang Grottoes. There were some great artworks so I took many photos of them. And in the afternoon, I went to some of Datong's temples—Huayan Temple, Shanhua Templeand Hanging Temple. Hanging Temple is also called Xuankong Temple, which is one of the world's top 10 oldest and most dangerous buildings.
On the second day, I visited some museums in Datong. There are a lot of museums and they are free for travelers. I enjoyed the folk arts there like Shulaibao. It is really popular in Datong.
I like Shanxi Daoxiao noodles best and it is one of the most popular street food in China.
A. People often say that if you don't visit Yungang Grottoes(石窟), then you never go to Datong. B. It was relaxing when we walked around the temple. C. And on the last day, I tasted some special food in Datong. D. It has rich heritages(遗产) for hundreds of years. E. It was scary when walking in the temple. |
Unlike most restaurants, the Enoteca Maria restaurant in New York offers only home-cooked food by grandmas coming from all over the world.
Joe Scaravella, a 61-year-old Italian-American born and raised in New York, opened the restaurant in 2007. After losing almost all his family members, he tried to recreate the feeling of a home-cooked meal in his restaurant.
He employed(雇佣) grandmas from different parts of Italy at first, and later, he began hiring grandmas from other countries like Argentina(阿根廷), Brazil, France and Greece. He built two kitchens in the restaurant: one for Italian grandmas to cook during lunchtime and the other for grandmas from other countries to cook every evening. The menus in the restaurant are often changing because what is being served depends on the grandmas who are on duty.
The restaurant opens five days a week from Wednesday through Sunday. At present, there are more than 40 grandmas and a grandpa working in it. Most of them came to the US with their children, helping take care of their grandchildren. Scaravella gave them the chance to express themselves in a culinary(烹饪的) way.
Enoteca Maria has received positive(正面的) reviews since its opening. Customers are impressed deeply by its delicious food, comfortable environment and most importantly, the grandmas who may remind them of their own.
On March 14, one of science's brightest stars went dark. Stephen Hawking, the world-famous British scientist, died at 76 in Cambridge, UK. 霍金是历史上最伟大的科学家之一。 He came up with the theory that the universe (宇宙) began with the Big Bang (大爆炸) and will end in black holes. His theories became the base for a lot of later research. 他还写书帮助人们了解宇宙。 His most famous book is A Brief History of Time (《时间简史》), which has sold more than 10 million copies around the world. Hawking has great scientific achievements. He is also a man with strong will.
When Hawking was 21, a serious illness stopped him from walking and talking. Later in life, he had to sit in a wheelchair and "speak" using a computerized voice. But this didn't stop him from living a meaningful and colorful life. "If one is physically disabled (身体残疾), one cannot afford to be psychologically (心理上) disabled as well," he once said.
