Once there was a king. He liked to write stories very much. He always thought that his stories were good, so he liked to show them to people. As people were afraid of him, they all said his stories were very good and they wanted him to write more for them to read. The king was so happy that he wrote many more stories.
One day, the king showed some of his best stories to a famous writer. He wanted the writer to praise (赞美) these stories. But after reading, the writer said his stories were so bad that there was no need to waste time on it and he should throw them into the fire. The king got very unhappy and sent him to prison.
After some time, the king set him free (释放) and ordered him to come to his palace (宫殿). Again he showed some of his new stories and asked what he thought of them. After reading them, the writer at once turned to the soldiers and said, "Take me back to the prison."
An Activity for Reading
By: CCTV Department of Education
This activity is developed by reading experts for you to use with children. Doing the activity with your children helps you develop their reading skills while having fun at the same time. If the reader finishes one book and asks for another, you know you are succeeding!
We wish you spend wonderful hours of reading with children! This summer holiday, we will invite some families to the program "Readers" to read aloud poems or books you like, and share your reading experience.
Activity: Read to me
It's important to read to your child, but equally important to listen to them to read to you.
What you will need: Books at your child's reading level!
What to do:
▲Read good books to your child. Parents who read aloud to their children are developing their interests and skills in reading. Encourage your children to listen, express their ideas, and ask questions.
▲Take turns. You read a paragraph and let your child read the next one. If your child becomes easier with reading aloud, you can ask him or her to read a full passage.
▲Listen carefully as your child reads. Listening to your child will encourage them to practice reading. Besides, this is another way to enjoy reading together.
▲If your child has trouble reading words, you can help him or her in some ways.
●Ask the child to jump over the word and read the rest, then try to guess the meaning of the missing word.
●Guide your child to use what he or she knows about letter sounds.
●Tell your child that you are proud of his or her hard working.

Last Sunday evening, my parents went out for a walk with my sister. But I studied alone at home because would have an English test. Suddenly, I saw bright light in my neighbor's kitchen. I thought he was cooking, so I went on studying.
Soon, there was a terrible smell in the air and I thought something was wrong. I went out and saw fire coming out of my neighbor's kitchen. So I shouted "Fire, Fire!" But no one heard or came out.
I ran quickly to my house to call 119, and then I rang my neighbor's doorbell, knocked at the door, but there was no response. I got into the house through the window and found my neighbor sleeping in his bedroom. I woke him up and we rushed out of the house together.
We tried our best to pour water through the kitchen window, but the fire was too heavy. Luckily, the firemen came and put out the fire quickly. When my parents came back, they found I was dirty and tired. After my neighbor told them the whole story, they were happy and said I was a brave boy.

Kevin is the only son of Uncle Frank and Aunt Dolly. He is in a middle school, too. He gets up at 6: 30 every day. Kevin's home is not far from his school. He usually takes the bus to school. It only takes him 15 minutes. Sometimes he walks to school. It's a 30-minute walk. But he thinks it's good exercise. In his free time, he likes dancing, singing, playing the piano and playing soccer. He dances very well. He gets some awards (奖) in dancing. Every day he dances and does sports.
However, Kevin doesn't forget his lessons. He does his homework first after school. He is very busy, but he is one of the best students in his class. His classmates and teachers love him very much. He usually teaches me to dance. Kevin often says, "I want to be a great dancer one day." Can his dream come true?

It is not easy for people to sail around the world in quite small boats. Sometimes the w gets bad. Accidents can happen easily and quickly. One family once had an accident. A big fish s under their boat and bit holes in it. Sea water came in and the boat soon went down. L, these people had another small boat - a lifeboat, so they all got into the lifeboat. They lived in the boat for many d. They ate and s, and always hoped. At l people in a ship saved them.
How do people live in a very small lifeboat for a long time? They must be strong in every way. They must have a hope, and they must have a strong desire to live. People cannot d sea water. If they drink a lot of sea water, they will quickly die. They must catch rainwater and drink it. They must also get fish and birds for food. Lifeboats do not often carry cookers. So, people cannot c their food in the lifeboats. Raw fish and birds are not very nice but they are their o food. They must eat raw f or they will die.
