In many space films, whenever the Earth faces danger, humans always leave the planet in spaceships. But the latest Chinese science fiction movie, The Wandering Earth, offers a1idea.
The film is based on a short story by a Chinese science fiction writer, Liu Ci xin. In this film, the Earth is in2of being damaged by the dying sun. In response, humans around the world work together to build a giant engine system (发动机系统) that will push the Earth3the Sun. Instead of giving up the Earth, this time we will4it with us.
For thousands of years, “homeland” has played an important role in the hearts and minds of Chinese people. One old idiom is “luoyeguigen”, which means5one's homeland in old age, like fallen leaves coming back to the roots of their tree. It shows that Chinese people have their closer ties with their6.
The special cultural background of Chinese is probably what sets The Wandering Earth different from Hollywood-style space films.
"What is Chinese science fiction?" Guo Fan, the film's director, said in an interview. "There is no more about superheroes to save humans alone. In Chinese culture, we7try our best to bring everyone together. This is what we saw in the movie. So the way that can really express our culture and spirit can be called a8science fiction. Otherwise, we just copy others and tell the same American stories."
And the makers of The Wandering Earth chose the best time to tell its Chinese science fiction story. The film was shown on Feb 5, the first day of Chinese New Year. It was a time when many people had just made the 9journey back to their hometowns no matter how busy the traffic they had to face. So to them, there is only one possible way to tell the story: The10goes wherever humans go, because it's our home.
"Love is still alive!" Wang Zhiru from Jiangxi Academy of Forestry, said excitedly when receiving a picture of a white crane on January 3rd 2019. The white crane they named Love was saved and set free in early 2018.
Love was first found on April 24th 2018, when Li Zengming, a farmer, drove past a reservoir in the countryside of Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi Province. Seeing it trying to fly but falling again and again, Li thought that it might be hurt. He drove to the shore and went into the water to rescue it. "I saw the white crane with dull eyes and a weak body. It was probably hurt. If I let it alone, it would be in danger," Li recalled. After more than half an hour, Li finally took the white crane back to the shore.
Then he called his uncle, an experienced animal saver for help. "Come over immediately and let's send it to the police station right away"said his uncle. When seeing the weak wild crane, Jiang Qingchun from the Five-Star Police Station, put down his work and checked it carefully.
"At the end of April, migratory (迁移的) birds usually return to the north. It's abnormal for a white crane to still be living nearby. It may be left behind because of its poor health." Jiang said. He contacted Wang at the Jiangxi Academy of Forestry for help. Wang's team found Love did not seem to be hurt or have illness, but it suffered from hunger and tiredness. After five days' treatment, its weight rose from 3.75kg to 4kg.
Being kept for long will be bad for birds' ability to survive in the wild. Wang's team decided on May 2nd to set it free at a place in northern China so that it could join the migrating group heading for Siberia in Russia. On May 8th, Love was set free at the Momoge National Nature Reserve.
There is nothing worse than being cheated. Now body language expert Judi James tells you the key signs to find out whether someone is telling a lie. Here are some ways to help you.
The long stop: Telling a lie is quite difficult for the body and brain to deal with. First your brain produces the truth. Then, you have to hide the truth and invent a lie. After that, you tell the lie. This often leads to a longer stop before answering.
The eye dart: Humans have more eye expressions than any other animal and our eyes can look around if we're trying to hide something. When we look up to our left, we're often recalling memory. But when our eyes roll up to our right, we are thinking new ideas. Also, the guilt(内疚)of a lie often makes people use an eye contact cut-off gesture, such as looking down or away.
The lost breath: Bending the truth causes a sudden stress response in most people. The mouth dries, the body sweats more, the pulse rate (心率) becomes quick and the rhythm of the breathing changes to shorter, shallower breaths that can often be both seen and heard.
The poker face: Some people prefer to have the poker face, because they think less is more and almost show less movement and eye contact when they are telling lies.
The face hide: When someone tells a lie they often want to hide their face from their audience. This can lead to a cut-off gesture like nose-touch or mouth-cover.
Self-comfort touches: People often move from side to side, touch their hair or play with wedding rings when they have stress. Most people use self-comfort gestures but this will increase greatly when someone is lying.
Zhao Yishen, the 33-year-old artist, is carving a woodblock (雕刻木板) carefully, with a chisel in his right hand. To carve the woodblocks, he has to hold this position for six hours. He has been carving woodblocks since 2012. “It feels good and looks beautiful when a Chinese character slowly appears on the woodblock under your chisel," says Zhao.
Zhao is now the only full-time carver working at a workshop that creates woodblock-printed books in Beijing. As a teenager he loved to read ancient Chinese books in the library, and the curiosity of how the books were made led him to get a job at an ancient books woodblock printing studio in Yangzhou in 2011 after graduating as a law major from university.
Block printing was listed as a UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009. Zhao started to learn the skill from Chen Yishi, one of the skill's masters, in 2012.
"The first step is to learn how to sharpen your chisel, "says Zhao. “After using it for a while, you need to sharpen it again." After that, the woodblock must be put at a certain angle that is deep enough to show up the characters and also to make sure the cuts are deep enough-but not too deep. Then Zhao puts the paper, face down, onto the wood after brushing oil on the paper. This helps to transfer the characters onto the block. Once the carving is finished, the woodblock is brushed with ink and paper pressed onto it. It is ready to print.
In Zhao's mind, the inked woodblock is a work of art. After a year of learning from Chen, Zhao found a job at Zhuyu Shanfang in 2013. His carved woodblocks have been used for several books over the past six years. "I just learned the basic skills, but to master it, I still need years of practice,” says Zhao. “A good craftsman can carve an entire book with every single character aligned in order."

Kitty came into my life twenty years ago. When my son, Josh, and I were walking by "The Stock Exchange" store in our hometown, we saw a basket full of little cats in the window. We talked about getting a cat as a friend to our new little dogs, Asja. It was easy to choose. She has attractive eyes and the sweetest face.
In her new home in the woods, Kitty spent many afternoons climbing trees and playing with the bushes. She easily made friends with Asja.
Kitty was Josh's cat. My love to her came as a surprise because I had never had a cat as a child. I loved to pick her up, holding her into my arms. I danced with her around the room while listening to my favorite music. Every time I took out my yoga mat, she was right under my nose, making her appearance known.
Now Kitty is no longer here with us. The house feels very different. Many times during the day, I find myself stopping to remember if she needs to be fed, or if her water needs to be changed. I now realize just how much a part of my life she really was.
Kitty stayed as long as she could-twenty years, three months. And as lucky as I was to have her for so long. There will never be a time when I will not miss my Kitty girl.
A. She is always in my heart.
