Cars are very popular in America. When the kids are fourteen years old. They dream of having their own 1. Many students work after school to 2 a car. In most places 3 people learn to drive in high school. They have to take a 4 test to get a license. Learning to drive and getting a driver's 5 may be one of the most exciting things in their lives. For many, that piece of paper is an important symbol(象征)that they are now grown-ups.
Americans seem to love their cars almost more than anything else. People almost never go to see a doctor when they are 6. But they will take 7 cars to a “hospital” at the smallest sign of a problem. At weekends, people 8most of the time in washing and waxing(打蜡) their cars. For some families it is not enough to have 9 car. They often have two or even three. Husbands need a car to go to work. Housewives need a car to go shopping or to take the children to school or 10 activities.
Let's look at two old but popular inventions we use in our daily life.
Band-Aids(创可贴)
The first Band-Aid was made by American Earle Dickson in 1921.The idea came to him by chance. Dickson's wife often cut her fingers in the kitchen. At that time gauze(纱布) and adhesive tape (胶带)didn't come together. People had to cut them to the right size. Dickson found they were always too big and soon fell off. So he put a piece of gauze on the center of a piece of tape. This is how he made the first Band-Aid. Later,Dickson's new inventions became very popular all around the world.
Bubble gum(泡泡糖)
Bubble gum was invented by accident. In 1928,American gum company worker Walter E. Diemer played around with new chewing gum recipes(口香糖配方). Chewing gum had already been invented more than half a century before then. But Diemer found that the gum he made was easy to blow. He blew a bubble and then saw the possibilities. He took some of his new gum to a shop and it sold out in a single afternoon. Since then,Dubble Bubble—the first brand of bubble gum—has made kids happy all around the world.
A rich young man decided that he would like to do some diving(潜水) in the sea, so he bought a diving suit and all the other things that he needed, and took some lessons at a diving school. Then one day he walked into the water by himself and began to explore(探索) the bottom(底部)of the sea. He saw a lot of beautiful fish and other things, and then, after half an hour, he suddenly saw a man waving(摇动)his arms and legs around wildly near the bottom of the sea. He was wearing only a bathing suit. The rich young man was very surprised to see him, so he took out a plastic notebook and a special pencil, which could write under water, and wrote, “What are you doing here?” He showed the notebook to the other man, who then took the pencil and wrote, “Drowning!”(溺水)
If someone says to you: “give me five”, do not search your pocket to get five yuan! It will make others laugh! The person's not asking for your money, but your fingers. In the US, "give me five" or "give me the high five" is a popular gesture (动作). You can see it often in films or on TV. It means the clapping (拍) of each other's raised (举起的) right hands together.
People do it when they meet for the first time or something happy happens. For example, a student has good marks in exams or wins a lottery ticket (彩票).If a football team wins a game, the players will give high fives to everyone around to celebrate.
This gesture may come from the old Roman(罗马) gesture of raising the right arm for the emperor(皇帝). This showed that the person raising his arm did not have a sword (刀) in his hand.
Why not try to give the high five to your friends?

“Who did this?”asked Miss Green.
There were 30 children in the classroom and all were trying to think about not only what they did, but also what our teacher already knew.
“Who broke this window?”
“Uh, Oh.” I thought. I was the one who broke the window with a football. I did not mean to do it. I would be in a lot of trouble. How could I pay for a big window like that? I didn't want to put up my hand. But I had to tell the truth. So, I raised my hand and told the teacher I broke the window.
Miss Green went to the bookcase and took down a book.“I know how you like birds, Peter.” She said .“Here is a book about birds and the book is yours now. I will not punish you this time. But Peter, you should remember that I am rewarding (奖赏)you for your honesty(诚实), not for breaking the window.”
I couldn't believe it! The teacher didn't punish me and I was getting my very favorite book. Now, I still use that book, and it always reminds me of (使我想起)the lesson my teacher taught me. Honesty is always best.
I raised my hand and told the teacher I broke the window.
