Tina was a seventeen-year-old girl who always wore a bright smile. She suffered from a disease and had to use a walker most of the time. People didn't speak to her very often. Maybe it was because she looked1 and people didn't know how to come near to her. Tina usually broke the ice with people she met with a big “2.”
In one class, I gave the students an assignment (作业) to recite(背诵) a poem. I only made the assignment worth a very small part of their total grade since I knew most of my students would not do it anyway. In the class, one by one each student 3 to correctly recite the poem. Finally, angry and half joking, I said that the next student who 4 recite the poem had to do three push-up (俯卧撑). To my surprise Tina was next. She used her walker to move to the front of the class. 5 she recited, she made a mistake. Before I could say a word, she 6 her walker and started doing push-ups. I wanted to say, “Tina, I was just joking!” But she7 , continued the poem and she finished the rest perfectly.
When she finished, a student asked, “Tina, why did you do that? It's not an important assignment!” “Because I want to be like you guys! To be 8 .” Tina said.
Silence fell on the whole room when another student cried out, “Tina, we're not normal! We are teenagers! We get in 9 all the time.” “I know,” Tina said as a big 10 spread across her face. The rest of the students laughed, too.
Tina got only a few points that day, but she got the love and respect of her classmates. To her, that was worth a lot more than a grade.

CHARACTERS—Max and Emma
SCENE 1—Dining hall, Sunville Middle School
EMMA: Max! Hi! Mr. Sosa says our band(乐队) can play in the talent show!
MAX: Cool! I'll tell Felipe to meet us in the music room after school for a practice.
EMMA: Umm. I wonder if it's a good idea to have Felipe in our band …
MAX: (With his mouth open) Of course it is! He's really good at the keyboard.
EMMA: Really ? He seems more interested in maths than anything else.
MAX: Well, he says maths and music are connected. He says that learning to read music and playing keyboard is like learning maths formulas(公式).
EMMA: Then I'm sure he's good at music, too. With Felipe on keyboard, we'll really have an edge over the other groups.
Every Wednesday, I go to Cantata Adult Life Services, a local retirement (退休)community in Brookfield, Illinois, US, with my classmates to do community service.
After my very first visit to Cantata, my life changed forever. That may sound a bit dramatic(戏剧性的), but volunteering with the elderly has changed my views on life.
Our visits last about an hour, and we bring 25-30 students every time. We play board games and cards with the residents(居民) while we're there.
You can watch all the movies and TV shows you want about “life back then”, but nothing compares to talking to the people who were there. Just hearing their stories has touched me in a way I never thought possible.
Whether it was talking to 98-year-old “Hurricane Hilda” about her great days as a roller skater or chatting with Lou about the times she danced with a famous actor, I was completely attracted by every single memory the residents wanted to share with me.
Even the residents who don't have amazing memories make the experience meaningful . I remember visiting Mrs Robinson. She couldn't think of much about her past, but she told me she'd never forget how kind I was just to listen to her “rambling (漫谈)”. It made me realize that it's the little things that make life worth living. That's something I won't forget anytime soon.
If there's one thing I've realized in my three years of visiting Cantata, it's that presence –just being there –means more than anything to many of the residents. And no matter how busy our lives are, there's always time to make someone's day.
For me, it feels great to be a source(源泉) of happiness, a smile on a bad day or a listening ear for old memories. And at the end of the day, that's all that matters.
It's easy to feel like you don't have anything in common with the elderly –especially when you're a teenager. But that's not true at all.
I hate to be overly clichéd (陈词滥调的) here, but age really is just a number. As young adults, it's important for us to realize this sooner rather than later. We can learn a lot from the elderly, and they can often get something from teenagers too.
a. play board games and cards with the residents
b. do some cleaning for the residents
c. listen to the residents talk about their memories
d. watch movies and Tvshows with the residents
Picture the scene: It's midnight. You're very hungry after studying for a long time. Then you see a nice pie in the fridge. Do you eat it? It seems that you shouldn't, for many reasons, including its influence on your studies.
Scientists have long known that eating late at night can make us gain weight. But now a new study has shown that late-night eating can also have a bad influence on our brains — it might hurt our ability to learn new things and store memories.
“We believe that late-night eating may affect (影响) our learning by affecting the parts of the brain that control learning and memory,” Dawn Loh, PhD, a project scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, said, “We believe the timing of when we eat is the main cause of the damaged (受损的) memory.”
For the study, the researchers looked at mice with strict feeding plans. For two weeks, the mice were either allowed to eat during the time when they are usually the most active, or during the time when they usually sleep. The mice received the same amount(数量) of sleep and calories.
Then the researchers tested the brains of the mice. In one test, the researchers tried to find out whether the mice could remember that a room was connected to an electric shock(电击) after 24 hours had gone by.
The researchers noticed that, when the mice were put in the room again, those mice that ate when they should have been sleeping were less likely(可能的) to get scared than those mice that ate during usual hours. It means that they didn't remember.
So think twice before the midnight snack — it might be bad for more than your weight.
—Sorry, I(promise)it to Grandpa White.
—Yes, not only Father but also Mother (mix)black tea with milk at the moment.
If your math teacher assigns(分派) five problems you should do six. If your Chinese teacher assigns eight pages of reading, you should read nine. The more you practice, the more you learn.
Studying is a matter of personal preference(偏爱), so choose the way you are most comfortable with. Some people like working at night when the house is quiet, while others like doing their work early in the morning. Still others like studying as soon as they arrive home from school while the work is fresh in their minds. No matter which way you use, try to do your best.
Studying is your business and business comes before entertainment(娱乐). When you are studying, phone calls should go unanswered, TV shows unwatched, snacks uneaten. Studying is the only thing in your mind. Nothing can pull you away from what you are studying.
Studying is like eating. You chew(咀嚼) it one bite at a time. You can plan what to do today, but don't do too much. When you can't finish the work you planned to do, you may lose confidence. On the other hand, you will not study well without a good plan. It all depends on how you arrange your time.
The students who hand in a clearly written paper is already half way to an A. Neat(工整的) papers are likely to get higher marks than sloppy(被泼水弄湿的) ones. When you write neatly and do your work carefully, the thoughts in your mind are clear. You are able to make fewer mistakes.
