I once knew an old man named John Smith. His bad1made him famous. John Smith was so forgetful that he sometimes 2what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly (不断地)remind him about his meetings, his classes3his meals. Once he forgot he had eaten breakfast4, at home and at school.
Since Smith was a professor at a well—known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment (尴尬).It wasn't that he was not5, as some people say, just very, very absent-minded (走神的). One hot summer day, Professor Smith decided to take his6to a seaside town about a three-hour train ride away. To make the trip more7for his students, he kept the name of the town a secret. However, by the time they arrived at the station, Smith forgot the 8of the town he was planning to visit. Luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the 9. He offered to take care of the students while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was 10.

Chopsticks were invented in China. There are many stories about who may have invented them. One of them is about Dayu.
Dayu was an ancient Chinese leader who helped his people fight floods. He was always busy and often ate in the wild. He used a pot to boil (煮沸)water and cook animal meat. Most of the time, he was in a hurry and didn't want to wait to eat. But the meat was too hot to pick up with his hands. In those days, people ate only with their hands.
So Dayu picked up some twigs (树枝)to help him hold the meat. The twigs later became the chopsticks we know today.
But of course, this is just one story. The earliest chopsticks we have found so far are more than 3,000 years old, dating back to the Shang Dynasty (朝代).The six bronze chopsticks were found in the Ruins of Yin (殷墟)in Anyang, Henan.
At first, chopsticks were just used as cooking tools. It was only after some time that people started to use chopsticks to eat.
Nov 21 is United Nations' World Television Day. While many of us today are familiar with the television, it's actually one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. TV changed the way that we get on with the world. And TV becomes more and more popular since its introduction. In fact, it's said that, by 2021, there will be 1.7 billion homes around the world that have TV at home.
Think about the life before TV. We mostly had to depend on the radio or newspapers to know what was going on in the world. But after TV arrived, the world seemed much smaller. It brought information to our home. People were able to communicate better, solve problems faster and know things happening around the world by watching the news. They could take part in global (全球的)culture—such as, Olympic Games.
But there is also a bad side to TV. It could be said to have destroyed communication as much as it improved it. In the days before television, an ordinary family would have played games or just talked with each other after evening meal. But since then, sitting around the TV quietly has become an evening activity.
Still, the United Nations says that TV "invites people to discover beyond their living rooms", and that is true. But sometimes, this discovery pays the price of refusing to get close to friends.
Try to imagine a life without a memory. It would be impossible. You couldn't use a language, because you wouldn't remember the words. You couldn't understand a film, because you need to hold the first part of the story in your mind in order to understand the later parts. You wouldn't be able to recognize anyone - even members of your own family. You would live in a present forever. You would have no past and you wouldn't be able to imagine a future.
Human beings have amazing memories. Besides all our memories about our own lives, we can recall (回忆) between 20,000 and 100,000 words in our own language as well as possibly thousands more in a foreign language. We have all kinds of information about different subjects such as history, science, and geography, and we have many skills such as driving a car or playing a musical instrument. All these things depend on our memory.
How well you remember things depends on many different factors. Firstly, some people have better memories than others, in just the same way as some people are taller than others. Secondly, research shows that, you can store different things in different parts of the brain. Ideas, words, and numbers are stored in the left—hand side, while the right-hand side remembers pictures, sounds, and smells. In most people, one side of the brain is more developed than the other, and this may explain why some people can remember people's faces easily, but can't remember their names.
Great inventions change the world. They help people live better life. The wheel is perhaps the (great) invention in history. After its invention, travelling became faster and (comfortable). Without the wheel, we would not have carriages, trains and (car). In 1867, the telephone, one of the most (practice) inventions, was invented. Alexander Graham Bell was its (invent). Since then, people (be) able to speak to each other over long distances. Mobile phones allow people to keep in touch each other anytime, anywhere. Thomas Edison (develop) the practical light bulb in 1879. With light bulbs, people can do as many things in the evenings they can in the daytime.
