Tom was leaving school to be a criminal(罪犯), never to return. He thought he was a lonely boy who was loved by 1. His best friend, Joe, was looking for Tom for the same reason, his mother beat him, 2 , he didn't do anything wrong. The two boys met Huck who 3with their plan about starting a life of crime on Jackson's Island with some food and tools in the boat .
In the midnight, they landed on the island 5 kilometers away and let the 4 go down the Missouri river. "It is just the life for me," said Tom. "I don't 5 to get up early to hurry to school, and wash, and all those6 things. I'm free now." The other two cheered too. It seemed wonderful for them to live7 on the lonely but happy island. But soon, they found that the life here was hard. They began to miss their parents and friends.
On Wednesday, Tom returned home and hid under the bed .He heard everyone missed them very much and searched the river ,they thought the boys had drowned(溺亡).
"Poor Tom, he wasn't really bad, he never8 any harm, and he had a good heart." Aunt Polly said and began to cry. They were going to wait until 9 for their funerals(葬礼).Tom had a new plan in his head, then he went back to his 10 and told everything to Joe and Huck.
That Saturday afternoon, Aunt Polly's family prepared their 11funeral clothes for the next day with great sadness. Even the weekend was 12 for children, who had no pleasure in their games.
When Sunday school finished, funeral began in the town church. Almost all the villagers came in black and nobody remembered 13 the church had been so full. Everybody thought they have made a mistake to see only14 in the boys, people all cried.
Suddenly, there was a slight noise, people all turned around and saw the three "dead" boys walking up the doorway. Aunt Polly, Joe's and Huck's families 15 their boys with kisses and thanks.
We surveyed 300 young people on what they like to do at weekends: one hundred people are from the ages of 11-18, one hundred 19-26 and one hundred 27-35. The following shows their answers:
Four beggars (乞丐) usually met at an old shack (小窝棚) at the end of the day. One day, they were very upset because none of them had got much in their begging bowls.
"I only got this piece of meat today," the first said. "I hardly got anything," the second said. "I just picked up these few vegetables outside the fruit and vegetable store." The third complained that all he was given was a handful of herbs(香草) that he couldn't eat on his own. The fourth beggar didn't do much better. "I only got the handful of old, dried beans, but they aren't very nice!"
As they sat around the fire, one of them had a great idea. "Let's put all our bits together and boil them. In this way, we can make a tasty dish and share it." They all agreed.
However, the first beggar thought, "I don't want to share. I'll just pretend (假装) to throw my meat into the pot. They'll never know and I'll eat my meat later." So he pretended to put the meat into the pot. Now the same idea had also hit the other beggars and the shack was so dark that no one could see what the others were doing.
Finally, one of them suggested that the dish should now be ready and, in turn, each of them helped himself to a bowl. They drank the hot water in absolute(绝对) silence, learning that selfishness doesn't taste all that good.
Everybody dreams. But only some people remember their dreams. Our dreams often include all the senses —- smells, sounds, sights, tastes and things we touch .Sometimes we dream the same dream over and over again.
Early in the twentieth century, two famous scientists developed their personal ideas about dreams. Austrian psychiatrist (奥地利心理学家) Sigmund Freud wrote a book called "The Interpretation (诠释) of Dreams" in 1900. Freud believed people often dream about things they want but can't have. Swiss (瑞士) psychiatrist Carl Jung worked closely with Freud for several years, but he believed dreams provide solutions to problems we face when we are awake.
Other researchers are studying how dreaming helps our bodies work with problems and very sad emotions (感情). Robert Stickgold is a professor of psychiatry (心理学教授) at Harvard University in Massachusetts. He says that when we dream, the brain is trying to make sense of the world. He does not agree with Sigmund Freud that dreaming is the way we express our hidden feelings and wishes.
Scientists believe it is important to keep researching dreams. Doctor Stickgold says it's more than one hundred years since Sigmund Freud wrote his important book about dreaming. Yet there is still no agreement on exactly how the brain works when we are dreaming or why we dream.
It was Saturday again. Grace and Karen disliked Saturdays. That was another thing the twins had in common. They shared the same clothes and tied their hair in the same manner. In fact, it was hard for their classmates and teachers to tell the difference between them sometimes.
Unlike their classmates, they had to get up early at seven every Saturday to prepare for their lessons. Grace had to attend the art lesson and Karen had to attend her ballet lesson. "How I wish I could do something different today," said the twins with one voice. All at once, an idea came to Grace and Karen at the same time. "What about exchanging our roles for a day?" they asked each other. It seemed like a wonderful plan. After giving each other a description of their own friends, Grace put on Karen's ballet dress while Karen put Grace's brushes and paints into her bag. Then they left for their classes.
When the art lesson started, Karen was lost. Unlike Grace, Karen was poor at drawing. When the art lesson finally ended, Karen didn't dare to hand in her work.
Meanwhile, Grace had problems in the ballet class as well. As she had no idea about the dance steps, she had to follow her classmates blindly. As a result, she kept knocking into them. Their ballet teacher became impatient with her, "Karen, you should remember the basic steps."
When Karen and Grace got home, they were tired out. They decided that they would never try to be someone else they were not. It seemed that the grass was not always greener on the other side.
