Years ago, I celebrated my 40th birthday with my friends. I arrived at the restaurant ahead of time,1I waited outside the restaurant. Then a homeless man came up to me and asked for 2. I had been given strict orders by my friends not to bring my wallet in case(以防) I paid for the3. So I told the man that I had 4money. He quietly smiled at me, and then left.
Just then a friend who 5arrived called out "Happy birthday!"6this, the man turned and asked, "Hey man, it's your birthday today?" "Yes, it is", I said. He 7, smiling and said loudly, "Happy birthday, man!" But I could 8imagine what happened next. The man reached into his pocket, pulled out a dollar bill and said "Here man, take this."
Though I was 9his action, I didn't want to accept money from a homeless man. I said, "Thanks. That's really 10of you, but that's OK." The man looked directly into my eyes and said, "Please take this." I still hesitated(犹豫)to accept this11, but I heard a voice within me shouting, "TAKE THE MONEY!" I hesitantly reached out and said, "Thank you". Excitedly, he caught my 12, gave me the dollar and said, "No, thank you brother!"
That experience made me feel like I had got far more than13!This was one of my greatest life 14: No matter how poor we may be, we always have something valuable to15with others.

"We only had one recess (课间休息) today!" a girl from Connecticut said sadly to her mom. The mother, Lucy Dathan wishes her daughter had more recess time. "It helps kids build relationships and be creative thinkers," Dathan is working to pass a state bill(议案). The bill would require at least 50 minutes of recess every day.
Advantages of recess
There was a report about recess in 2017. It said that playtime encourages kids to be active. It can build healthy bodies. It also helps kids make friendships. Last year, the state started requiring two recess periods a day. Most U.S. schools offer 27 minutes. But some schools offer none at all.
Powerful Voices
At least six states have laws that require primary schools to provide recess. Other states are considering the same thing. Kids can help. In Arkansas, they asked lawmakers to consider a state bill. This bill requires 40 minutes of recess. Izzy Kopsky is one of those kids. Playing with his friends is his favorite part of recess, but he felt like he didn't have enough time to do that. He spoke in front of lawmakers and told them that more recess time could help students pay attention in class. The governor of Arkansas signed the state's recess bill on April 1st.He likes the kids' efforts. "Young people can have a powerful voice."
Test Case
Many schools have to make sure students do well on state tests. That's why some schools have shorter recess. It makes more time for class. But cutting back on recess may not be the right choice. Recess can improve a child's memory and focus.
It was a sunny afternoon, James took his money box again but found nothing. He carefully counted the coins that lay on the bed. $4.52 was all that he had. The scooter he wanted was $20! How was he going to get the rest money?
James' friends all had scooters. It was difficult to hang out with people when you were the only one without wheels. He thought about what he could do. He didn't ask his parents, for he clearly knew that his parents had no money.
There was one way to get money and that was to make it. He would have to find a job, but who would hire him at his age and what he could do? He decided to ask Mr. Clay for advice, who is usually helpful.
"Well, you can start right here," said Mr. Clay, "My windows need cleaning and my car needs washing."
That was James' odd-job business. For three months, he worked every day after finishing his homework. He was diligent for the jobs that people found for him to do. He took dogs and babies for walks, cleaned out cupboards, and mended books. He couldn't remember the number of the cars he washed and windows he cleaned, but the money increased. He knew that he would soon have enough for the scooter he liked.
Three months later, the day finally came when James counted his money and found $94.32. He wasted no time running to the shop and picked up the scooter he wanted. He rode it proudly home, looking forward to showing the new scooter to his friends. It had been hard working for the money, but James knew that he valued his scooter far more since he had bought it with his own money. He had got what he thought was impossible, and that was worth much more than the scooter.
① He mended some books.
② He sold one of his bikes.
③ He washed cars and windows.
④ He took dogs and babies for walks.
There are many colours in nature. But do you know if a colour has weight? I think you'll say "no". But I am afraid you are wrong. If you don't believe, you may do a small experiment.
First, put two objects with the same weight into two boxes. Then, cover the box. Third, wrap(包裹) one box with a red piece of paper, the other with a white piece of paper. OK. Now hold the boxes with your hand one by one. It is certain that you will think the red one is a little heavier. Why do you think so? A scientist found that different colours have different weight in a man's mind. So he did many tests and at last he got the result. That is to say, every colour has its own weight in our mind and their order(顺序) is the same. The heaviest colour is red, then blue, green, orange, yellow and white.
The scientist told us that colours also have smell. Can you smell the colour? Of course not. Then why did the scientist say so? That is because every colour stands for a kind of light with a certain wavelength (波长). It reaches our brain(大脑) through sense organs(感觉器官).
According to this discovery, scientists say that people accept the colours they like, and refuse the colours they hate. So your body and mind will be healthy by using the colors you like. Or you'll be nervous or even get ill. For example, if you stay in a room with red windows, wallpapers and furniture for two hours, you'll feel you have been there for four hours. But if the room is blue, you'll feel you have been there for only an hour. Another example, if a person walks out of a red room and into a blue room, his temperature will fall. That means our body temperature will change with different colours.

My Opinion about Garbage-sorting(垃圾分类)
On July 1, Shanghai introduced a new garbage-sorting regulation (法规). Everyone in the city must now sort(将……分类) his or her garbage. This sounds like great idea. I wonder — will people actually follow this regulation?
In fact, most Chinese (city) already have these recycling options(设置). Outside of my apartment building, there three bins — kitchen waste, recyclable waste and other waste. Guess how many people actually put (they) garbage into the right bin? Most people just put the garbage into whatever bin they want.
Look, I understand sorting garbage (correct) can be hard. For example, not everyone (know) the difference between "wet" and "harmful" garbage. And it takes time (sort) it right. How can we deal with this problem?
Actually, it can be done. In some US cities, every family must sort the garbage. they don't, they have to pay a fine(罚款).
Personally, I don't think it would be hard me to sort my garbage. I don't sort it now, but I will later.
