You have waited 45 minutes for the valuable 10 minutes' break. But when the bell for the next class rings, you can't believe how quickly time has passed. If you have this experience, you'll know how time flies when you are having fun and drags when you are bored. Now scientists have come up with a reason why this happens.
They have found that the brain changes its way to work according to how we direct our attention to a task. When we are bored, we pay more attention to how time is passing. And this makes our brains think the clock is ticking more slowly.
Recently some researchers who want to understand the conditions carried out an experiment. In the experiment, twelve volunteers watched a picture while researchers monitored(关注) their brain activity.
The volunteers were told to first notice how long a picture appeared, then the color of the picture, and thirdly, study the both. The results showed that the brain was more active when the volunteers paid attention to more subjects.
It is thought that if the brain is busy noticing many aspects(方面) of a task, it has to spread it resources, and pays less attention to the clock. Therefore, time seems to go quickly. If the brain is not so active, it spends its full energy on the passing of time. As a result, time seems to move slowly.
Next time you feel bored in class, perhaps you should concentrate(专心于) on what the teacher is saying.
One can hardly imagine Chai Huilong, wearing glasses and a T-shirt, as a Chinese chive(韭菜) farmer.
Two years ago, Chai graduated from Tianjin College of University of Science and Technology. He took over his parents' 20,000 square meter plot of land and set up a business: growing Chinese chives.
But instead of growing Chinese chives in the traditional way, Chai plants them in garden pots and sells them directly to customers through an online sore. Now his family makes 10 million yuan a year.
Running a business is a dream for many young graduates. Chai is one of those young graduates who have found great career opportunities in rural areas. They make good use of their agricultural knowledge and new skills, and get support form the government.
When Chai came up with the idea of growing Chinese chives, he was not sure about running his own business. But Youth Business China, a non-profit(非盈利的) program supported by the government which helps encourage youth entrepreneurship (创业精神), gave Chai courage and confidence. The program offers 30,000 to 50,000 yuan in start-up funding to young people who have great ideas. It also assigns(分配) each of them a tutor who provides guidance on spending the money and running the company.
"My relatives and friends regard farming as a bad job. But being a farmer is just my job," said Chai. So far, his products have been shipped to places as far as Dubai on the Arabian Gulf. Chai is confident that he can make a greater success of this job in the future.
a. Chai Huilong became a Chinese chive farmer.
b. Chai thought of an idea for growing Chinese chives.
c. Chai sold Chinese chives online and made much money.
d. Chai found great career opportunities in rural areas.
Old George bought the black gloves for just $35 ten years ago. They were made of leather skin, soft and warm and very strong. Until then, he had worn cheaper manmade material. Those gloves never lasted longer than three years. He first decided to buy the expensive gloves, because they would make him feel nice in front of others.
George never let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves, so they looked new. Losing this favorite thing was almost like losing a child to him. Bad luck! Geogorge lost his expensive gloves on New Year's Day.
Back home, George was at a loss. In deep winter, he could not do without a pair of gloves. If he bought cheap ones again, he would have to replace(更换) them vey soon. If he bought a new leather pair, it would cost $50 now. He was upset that people no longer returned things they found on the road.
After the holiday, poor George decided to buy another leather pair. Before boarding the subway, he went into Value Mart again to see if his gloves had been returned to the Lost and Found Office(失物招领处).
"What color are they?" the woman in the office asked again.
"Black," he gave the same answer. She looked onto her drawer and drew out a pair of men's leather gloves. "Are they?"
One would think that campers would know not to break the branches off trees for firewood, drive fast around the campground, litter, or leave a fire not looked after, but I've seen people do all of these things. No matter where you put up your tent, here are five things not to do at a campground.
What's it like to be near someone who decides to arrive late at night? Last summer, on a rainy night at a state park in Vermont, we heard noises from excited kids and barking dogs very close to our tent after midnight. There is no beautiful way to set up camp in the middle of the night, so please, just don't do it.
No one thinks that his dog is annoying, but we all know that some pets are better off left home. The only thing worse than a camper who stands by lazily as his dog barks at passers-by for no reason at all, is that he leaves his dog at his campsite while he goes off for the night.
This is the most important and often unnoticed camping manner in the book. Nearly every campground has rules that do not allow noise late at night and early in the morning, but most places also don't have the staff to carry them out.
You might accept leaving your bar of soap thinking that someone might have forgotten to bring theirs, but I can assure you that non one wants to use your leftover soap especially if it's hairy, so please take it with you.
No matter how good your taste in music is, I'd say most people prefer quiet hours with the nature. The truth is that no one want to hear your music except for yourself. Headphones are a great invention, but since too many campers fail to pack them, don't forget your earlugs.
A. Bring a noisy dog. B. Check in late at night. C. Fail to bring your soap D. Push quiet hours rules aside E. Leave behind your used soap F. Take sound equipment with you |
I saw my first butterfly of the spring today. I was 1 some food and other things into my house when suddenly the little lady 2 right down in front of my face.
3 stayed there for a long time, gently dancing in the air. She was so beautiful that my eyes became filled with tears and my heart 4 with love. Then she left for some delicious flowers growing in my garden. I smiled, wiped my 5 and felt thankful for the wonder of life.
Butterflies have held a 6 place in my heart since I lost my mother to cancer when she was 7 fifty-five years old. She used to love it when the butterflies would land near her while she worked in the 8. She would even speak to them 9 her musical voice. After she died l would 10 her whenever I saw one of those gentle angels(天使)flying by. I even told my young children that every time they saw a 11 dancing in the gentle wind, it was their grandmother saying "Hello" from 12.
When today's butterfly dropped in to say "Hello", I once again felt joy beyond words. I felt like l was dancing on the clouds with my mother 13 a thousand angels were singing. Someone 14 say I'm cheating myself, but I know this isn't so. Cheating doesn't fill your heart with 15.The next time you get your own" Hello" from heaven ,just welcome it into your heart and let it help you to be a loving person.
One day, all feelings are vacation on an island, and each was having a good time. Suddenly, there was a strong storm, so they all rushed to their boats. Yet, Love didn't wish (run) away quickly. But as the clouds darkened, Love realized it was time to leave. But there were no boats to use. Love looked around with hope.
Just then Richness was passing by. Love asked "Richness, can you take me with you?" She answered, "No, I can't. There's a lot of gold in my boat. There's no place here for you."
Sorrow passed by after a while. Again, Love asked for help. But it was useless. "No, I can't take you with me. I am so sad. I want to stay on (I) own.
When (happy) passed by a few minutes later, Love again asked for help. But he was so happy that he couldn't care about (someone) else.
Love was growing hopeless. Just then somebody shouted, "Come, Love. I will take you with me." Love didn't know who was so kind, jumped onto the boat happily.
After Love (save), he met Knowledge. Love asked, "Knowledge, do you know the one was so (help) to give me a hand when no one else wished to help?"
Knowledge smiled, "That was Time."
"Time?" asked Love. "But why did time help me?" Knowledge smiled and answered, "Because only Time is able to understand valuable Love is."
