Grandfather was a wise man. No matter how badly-behaved I had been, I could tell Grandpa anything and my 1 were safe. He loved me and would never give them away.
I remember a time when a group of us were playing baseball behind Mrs. Brown's house. I hit one pitch(投球) just right and …slam! It ended up breaking Mrs. Brown's kitchen window! We all 2!
After I got home, I 3 Grandpa about it. He knew we had been warned many times about the dangers of playing where we shouldn't. 4 he just listened.
"I was 5," I told him, with my head down. "I hate myself for what I did. Is there a way out?" "Well," he said, "Mrs. Brown has a problem, just like you. If she knew you cared and you were afraid of her, she would be sad. I'll bet she wishes you would give her a 6 to be understanding. It's 7 decision. Are you planning to pretend(假装) nothing happened? Just keep quiet and hide what you're not proud of?"
"I don't know," I sighed(叹息). "Things might get worse…" "Let's think it through," he said finally. "If you were Mrs. Brown, what would you do?" I didn't know 8 she might do. I had been afraid that Mrs. Brown would stay mad at me, so I ran. On the way home I 9 that she was a mean witch(女巫) running after me.
"Well," I said, taking a deep breath, "One way is to tell Mrs. Brown I'm sorry and offer to fix her 10. "
"If you call her," asked Grandpa, "What's the worst that can happen?" I had to think for a moment. I realized that even if she did not 11 my apology(道歉), it could not be any worse than seeing the disappointment(失望) on Mom and Dad's 12.
Grandpa smiled when he knew I had figured it out(明白). "Doing what's right is not always easy," he said, handing me the phone. "I'm proud of you." Grandpa did not make me do it. It was always my 13. As it turned out, Mrs. Brown was very kind and we 14 became really close friends.
Grandpa passed away a year ago and I miss him so much. He gave me the tools to fix many problems and most of all he showed me I was 15.

A bright moon shining on faraway bough(树枝),
Frightened the magpie(喜鹊),
A soft wind in the deep of the night,
Made the cicadas(蝉) sing.
Among the pleasant smell of ripe (成熟的) rice,
There was talk of a harvest year.
I heard frogs, here, there, everywhere.
Seven, eight stars shining in faraway sky,
A few drops of rain on this side of the hill.
Passing the stream bridge and turning,
The old thatch(茅草的) store, suddenly came into my view,
By the side of the communal(公社的) woods.
Self-disciplined (自律的) people are not all excellent people. But nearly all excellent people are self-disciplined people. Some of them read every day. Some of them never run late. The real difference between an elite person and an ordinary(普通的) person is that an elite person can manage his or her time well. That's where their success comes from. What people call self-discipline is in fact self-management.
One example is staying fit. Never underestimate (低估) someone who is in good shape(身材). Anyone who has ever tried to lose weight knows that it's not easy. It's even harder to avoid putting weight back on. If someone is in good shape, it shows that he knows the principles (原则) of staying fit and is able to stick to a plan that uses these principles.
If someone is in good shape, it means that this person is good at managing themselves and their time. Whether it is natural or acquired, it is a great skill. It also shows that this person is able to keep persevering (坚定不移的) and can balance long-term goals with short-term goals. So if someone is in good shape, he or she is way more than just healthy.
How do you learn self-management? First of all, set a goal and write down your reasons for wanting to achieve it. Create a list of all the things you need to do to achieve this goal and start to work on them one at a time. With self-discipline, small things in life will no longer trouble you. Only through self-discipline can you truly own your future.
National medals(奖章) and honorary titles(荣誉称号) are usually awarded once every five years. As part of the celebration of the 70th anniversary(周年) of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC), President Xi Jinping awarded forty-two people the Medal of the Republic, the Friendship Medal and national honorary titles. They come from different backgrounds, including scientists, lawmakers, educators, artists, model workers and six non-Chinese people. All have made big contributions(贡献) to the nation's construction and development. Here are some of the people we'll know.
Chinese scientist Tu Youyou is one of the eight who were awarded the Medal of the Republic. Tu, who won the 2015 Nobel Prize for her discovery of the malaria drug artemisinin (抗疟药物青蒿素), is the first Chinese citizen to win a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. She has saved millions of lives worldwide. She has also made important scientific innovations(创新) in traditional Chinese medicine.
Tu is not the only one who has given her life to the country's development. Nan Rendong, before his death in 2017, led the research and development of China's Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST, 500米口径球面射电望远镜), the world's largest radio telescope. He worked on the project for more than 20 years. His contributions to Chinese astronomy (天文) earned him the title, "the people's scientist".
Also receiving awards are six foreign friends who have lent their hands to assist with China. Former French Prime Minister(总理) Jean-Pierre Raffarin, one member of the Friendship Medal, is a supporter of the Belt and Road Initiative(一带一路倡议). Having worked to strengthen the friendship between French and Chinese people in the past few years, he is "sincerely pleased" with the honor. "To work for this friendship is to work for peace," Raffarin said.
Thanks to the great efforts made by these great people, we can live in a peaceful country.
"We cannot be far from the road of yellow brick, now," remarked the Scarecrow (稻草人), as he stood beside the girl, "for we have come nearly as far as the river carried us away. "
The Tin Woodman(铁皮人) was about to reply when he heard a low growl, and turning his head (which worked beautifully on hinges) he saw a strange beast come bounding over the grass toward them. It was, indeed, a great yellow Wildcat(野猫), and the Woodman thought it must be chasing something, for its ears were lying close to its head and its mouth was wide open, showing two rows of ugly teeth, while its red eyes glowed like balls of fire. As it came nearer the Tin Woodman saw that running before the beast was a little gray field mouse(田鼠), and although he had no heart he knew it was wrong for the Wildcat to try to kill such a pretty, harmless creature. So the Woodman raised his axe(斧头), and as the Wildcat ran by he gave it a quick blow that cut the beast's head clean off from its body, and it rolled over at his feet in two pieces.
The field mouse, now that it was freed from its enemy, stopped short; and coming slowly up to the Woodman it said, in a strange little voice: "Oh, thank you! Thank you ever so much for saving my life. "
"Don't speak of it, I beg of you," replied the Woodman. "I have no heart, you know, so I am careful to help all those who may need a friend, even if it happens to be only a mouse."
"Only a mouse!" cried the little animal angrily. "Why, I am a Queen—the Queen of all the Field Mice!" "Oh, indeed," said the Woodman, making a bow. "Therefore you have done a great deed, as well as a brave one, in saving my life," added the Queen.
At that moment several mice were seen running up as fast as their little legs could carry them, and when they saw their Queen they exclaimed: "Oh, your Majesty, we thought you would be killed! How did you manage to escape the great Wildcat?" They all bowed so low to the little Queen that they almost stood upon their heads.
"This funny tin man," she answered, "killed the Wildcat and saved my life. So hereafter you must all serve him, and obey his slightest wish."
Mary: Hey, Alexis, I am glad you came over to my house to study for our coming Math exam. I have gone over all my notes, but I am still not confident enough.
Alexis: Yes, this test is going to be hard. But I haven't had time to study the notes yet. Let's do a review together, starting from Chapter One (第一章). OK?
Mary: Let's do it!
Alexis: Well, do you remember what content (内容) was covered in the first chapter?
Mary: Yes, I think I do. The first chapter is about the quadratic function (二次函数). Is that right?
Alexis: Yes! You got it! Good job! Can you finish it in five minutes?
Mary: I don't know, Alexis! I am not good at writing quickly. I always have difficulties putting my thoughts on paper. I've worked hard to improve my math skills, but I still have a long way to go.
Alexis: I do not think that is your problem. Things can get worse when you start to feel nervous.
Mary: Thanks for your advice. When we are done with this, I will test you on Chapter Two.
Alexis: Okay!

England is the biggest of the four countries in the United Kingdom. Together with Scotland and Wales, these three countries make up the island of Great Britain. When you include Northern Ireland (the country in the northeastern part of Ireland) we call it the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK). Over 50 million people live in England. That's around 80 percent of the UK's total population. It is a multicultural (多元文化的) country where more than 250 languages are spoken in the capital city of London. Outside of the big cities, England is a very green country and has many beautiful rural areas, such as the Lake District in the north and the New Forest, a big area of forest in the southern part of the country.
Music
English people love music. In the summer, there are music festivals all over the country. Glastonbury (格拉斯顿堡) is a five-day festival of music, dance, comedy, theatre and circus (马戏). About 175,000 people go to it each year.
People in England listen to all types of music, especially pop and rock. England has produced many international groups and singers like the Beatles, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran and Adele.
Sport
The most popular sports in England are football, rugby (橄榄球) and cricket (板球). Most towns have at least one field where teams can play. English football teams like Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool are world-famous. Cricket is a traditional sport played with a bat (球拍) and ball. It began in England and is now played all over the world.
Food
England is a very multicultural country and this has a big influence on the food people eat. Indian, Chinese and Italian cuisines (饭菜) are popular besides traditional English food like fish and chips, roast beef or sausage and mashed potatoes (土豆泥). Many English people drink several cups of tea each day, usually with milk.
