A few years ago, I was about fourteen or fifteen years old. One1, my parents went out for a walk after dinner. So I stayed at home alone watching TV. Later I heard my cat, Aster, meowing(喵喵叫) at the2. She was a funny and proud cat. She was good3catching mice and sometimes, she would like to show me her "prize". I went over to4the door. She ran in quickly with5in her mouth. After she dropped it on the floor, I found it was a mouse ,again. It was6dead. My mother always liked to keep the floor7.so I had to find something to pick the mouse up and8it away.
When I came back, I found the mouse9. I looked everywhere but couldn't find10. We had a basement(地下室)11the house, so there were so many places and holes for it to stay. I12 looking for it at last. But that was not the13of that. About a year later, I was helping my mom14 up the basement. And you can guess what we saw. Yes, some bones(骨头) of a dead mouse. We could only believe and hope that it was that mouse. The one ran away from the floor on that night. We really hoped so15no one wants a house full of mice.
Dear editor,
My English teacher is very strict with us. Several days ago, when we were in class, Tom asked me a question. But my English teacher thought we were speaking in class. She asked us to stand at the back of the classroom for a few minutes. This made me unfair. After that, I feel nervous in her class, so I don't like her class. However, I really want to learn English well. What should I do?
Yours, Mike
Dear Mike,
I am sorry you are having difficulty with your English class. Every teacher wants his or her students to study hard. So I think you should have a talk with your English teacher and tell her what you were doing with Tom that day. If she knows your worries, maybe she will help you with your English. And she will be pleased to hear you want to learn English well. Of course, you should know that what your teacher did was good for you. When you are not trying as hard as you can, she has to stop it and try to help you. Wish you have a better life!
Yours, Editor
Nobody likes to do chores, especially kids. How can you make your kids get into a good habit of doing their chores? Try making chores fun for them.
Play some music: Music makes everything seem like a party, doesn't it? Play your kids' favorite music and let them dance around while they are doing their chores.
Make it a treasure hunt (寻宝): It's a good way when you would like them to clean the house. Let them know that you hide (隐藏) a $5 bill someplace. If they find it, they can keep it.
Change often: If your kids keep doing the same chores for months, they may feel bored. Teaching them a new task (任务) is fun for both you and the kids. They will feel more grown up when they get a new task.
Do it together: It's never fun to be the only one working and watching everyone else relaxing. If everyone takes part in doing chores, you will finish them faster and have more fun.
I will never forget the accident happened to me in the summer of 2014.
One day, I drove my parents' new yellow car to my friend's house. I spent the day at my friend's house and then I drove home. When I was almost home, I had to turn on the gravel road(碎石路) to get to my house. I turned the car too fast, and it rushed(冲) into a ditch(沟). I was badly hurt. I slowly got up on one leg and called for help. There was a farmer on the road and he saw me. He then called an ambulance.
When we were waiting for the ambulance, the farmer did everything he could to make me feel better. He asked me questions about my family and school. After about half an hour, the ambulance arrived and took me to the hospital. After I arrived there, the doctor looked me over carefully. At last, I had to sit in a wheelchair for a few weeks.
From that accident, I learned that I should be more careful when driving and should never drive too fast.
My uncle has a very beautiful umbrella. He has had it for years. As he is very careful with it, so it still looks as good as new. He shook his head. "Then how did you get it?" I asked. "Well," he answered," there's a strange true story about the umbrella. About ten years ago, I was walking along a quiet London street one evening when it suddenly rained. I had no raincoat or umbrella. And the people in the street were fewer and fewer. As I was on my way to a party, I was afraid to get wet. So I stood in a doorway and waited for the rain stop. What was worse, there even wasn't a person around, and still it rained and rained. At last, a young man came to the place where I was standing. I stepped(跨步) out of the dark doorway where I had been standing, hoping that he would allow me to walk to the next corner with him, where I could get a taxi. As I suddenly(突然) appeared before him, the young man was so shocked(震惊的) that he dropped the umbrella. He ran away and disappeared into the darkness. I picked up the umbrella and continued my walk. I knew it would be hard in this big city to find the owner so I've kept it ever since."
A. Gradually, it grew quite dark.
B. It was a gift from his best friend.
C. I asked him where he was going with that umbrella.
D. No buses ran through the street and there were no taxis.
E. I asked my uncle whether he bought it or someone sent him as a gift.
F. He held a large umbrella over his head.
He Lost His Arm But Is Still Climbing
Aron Ralston is an American man who is (interest) in mountain climbing. As a mountain (climb), Aron is used to (take) risks. This is one of the exciting things about doing dangerous sports. There were many times when Aron almost lost his life because of accidents. April 26, 2003, he found himself in a very dangerous situation when climbing in Utah.
On that day, Aron's arm was caught under a 360-Kilo rock fell on him when he was climbing by himself in the mountains. Because he could not free his arm, he stayed there for five days and hoped that someone would find him. But when his water ran out, he knew that he would have to do something to save his own life. He wasn't ready (die) that day. So he used his knife to cut half his right arm. Then, with his left arm, he bandaged (he) so that he wouldn't lose too much blood. After that, he climbed down the mountain to find help.
After losing his arm, he wrote a book called Between a Rock and Hard Place. This means being in a difficult situation that you can't seem to get out of. In this book, Aron tells of the (important) of making good decisions, and of being in control of one's life. His love for mountain climbing is so great that he kept on climbing mountains even after this experience.
Do we have the same spirit as Aron? Let's think about it before we find ourselves "between a rock and a hard place", and before we have to make a decision that could mean life or (die).
We have to the sports meeting because of the weather.(put)
In my opinion, it is very important to yourself.(depend)
