Smiling is the best way of making friends.
When I was thirteen 1 old, my father found a job in the city. So my family moved there. I also came to a 2 school near where we live. My old school was far away. At first, I did not know anyone in my class. I was very lonely 3 I was afraid to make friends with my classmates. I 4 talk to anyone about my problem, and I didn't want my parents to 5 me.
Then one day, something good happened. I was sitting at my desk 6 as usual while my classmates were talking happily with each other. At that moment, 7 came into the classroom. I didn't know who he was. He passed me and then turned back. He looked 8 me and, without a word, smiled. Suddenly, I felt happy, lively and warm. That smile changed my life. I started to talk with the other classmates and made friends. Day by day, I became 9 to everyone in my class.
10 the smile, I have moved on to a new life. Now, I believe that the world is what you think it is. So smile at the world and it will smile back.
We know good manners are important. Today I am going to tell you something about manners in different countries. I think you already know that people in different countries usually have different ways of doing things. Something that is rude in one country may be quite polite in another. For example, in Britain you mustn't lift your bowl to your mouth when you are having liquid food. That is considered bad manners in Britain. But in Japan you needn't worry about making a noise when you drink something. It shows that you are enjoying it. In Britain we try not to put our hands on the table at all during a meal. In Mexico, however, guests are expected to keep their hand on the table throughout a meal. In Arabic countries we must be careful with our hands. You see, in Arabic countries you mustn't eat with your left hand. This is considered to be very impolite. So, what should you do if you visit a foreign country? Well, you needn't worry. You can ask the native people there to help you and you can just watch carefully and try to do what they do.
My grandmother is over eighty years old. She always complains about how greatly things have changed, and she often says that life used to be better.
Families aren't families the way they used to be. If a husband and wife are having problem with their marriage, they don't stay together any more. They choose to divorce. Mothers used to stay at home and take care of their children, but now everyone is busy working; no one has time to look after children at home.
And the cars! No one walk any more; people get richer and richer, and more and more people buy cars and drive. We used to walk five miles to school every day, even in winter. But now children don't.
And in school, children don't have to think any more. When I was at school, I used to add, subtract, multiply and divide using my head in math class, but now, children use calculators instead.
Most families have computers and TVs now. In the past we didn't have computers or TVs, we spent a lot of time talking with our family members. But now, people are too busy to talk to each other. If they have time, they'd watch TV or surf the Internet rather than talk to family members. They are even too busy to eat and think.
Life used to be simple, but it isn't any more.

Eating in Western restaurant is a little different from eating in Chinese ones. It is to understand the differences and to act politely. As their saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”
When you first arrive at the restaurant, you should wait for the waiter to you to a table. Sometimes it is all right to a table for yourself, but you should ask . In the Western restaurant, each person usually asks for their food or dishes and eats they ask for. Western people don't put all of the food in the middle of the table to share.
One of the differences between Chinese restaurants and Western ones is that most Chinese restaurants are noisy, but most Western restaurants are and people there speak in a low voice. Don't shout to the waiters, people may think that you are rude.
If you need help, you should try to ask with your eyes of your voice. It's better not to put up your hand, either.
