After their 15yearold pet dog died, Rain and his wife, Ann, looked for months to find the right new pet. "I love dogs," said Rain, a worker at a health club in New York. "I can't 1 not having one."
Finally, the couple found a lovely young 2 and decided to 3 him home. They named him Little Sheep. Little Sheep quickly made himself at home, sleeping on his new 4 bed at night.
With heart disease for 25 years, Rain 5 took his medicine four times a day and always had no problems. 6 on March 17, he took the wrong amount(数量) of medicine before he went to sleep. When he got out of bed to 7 the bathroom at night, suddenly, he felt his heart beating fast and later fell to the floor heavily.
"Little Sheep was usually very 8and wellbehaved," said Ann. "But when my husband hit the floor, the dog gave a loud cry like a wild animal. I was woken but didn't know what was happening. Then I saw my husband 9 on the bathroom floor. I ran for the 10 and called a hospital at once."
Rain spent several hours in the hospital. By 6:30 a. m, he had been 11 enough to go home. "It surprises me that Little Sheep has such great 12," said his thankful owner. "He's becoming a calm little gentleman. We can walk him on our street, unleashed(未拴住的), without any problem. He's got a lot of 13 now, and everyone wants to 14 him kindly."
"We feel the name Little Sheep is not good enough," said Rain. "So now we call him Big Hero, more 15 for an animal of his ability."
One Sunday evening, it was quite dark when old Stanley went for his walk. He was walking along the sidewalk, Suddenly, he saw a white car coming around the corner at high speed. It was going too fast and crashed into a red car in the street where he was walking. He rushed up to the cars to see if anyone was hurt and needed help.
The two drivers were arguing.
"You came around the corner too fast," one man said.
"No!" said the driver of the white car, "That's not true! Your car was parkedin a wrong place."
Stanley listened to their argument and then said the white car driver was wrong to drive too fast. The driver of red car asked Stanley to prove he was right in court(法庭). Stanley gave the driver his name and telephone number.
Next Thursday morning, Stanley was asked to go to the court. The lawyer(律师) for the driver of the white car asked him a lot of questions about what he had seen. Then he asked Stanley how old he was.
"I'm eighty-two," answered Stanley.
"Do you usually wear glasses ?" asked the lawyer.
"Yes, I do," answered Stanley.
"Were you wearing them on the night of the accident?" the lawyer asked.
"No," replied Stanley.
Then the lawyer said, "Why should the court believe you? You are eighty-two years old, you were not wearing your glasses, and it was dark. How far can you see in the dark?"
Stanley thought about it for a minute. "Well," he said, "when it's dark, I can see the moon. How far is that?"
Different vitamins are found in different foods. Then which foods should be eaten to keep us healthy? Let's look at some important vitamins for the answer.
Vitamin A helps to protect skin from becoming dry. It is also helpful to the eyes. Without vitamin A, you cannot see well in darkness. Vitamin A is found in animal liver and yellow part of eggs. Sweet potatoes, carrots and other dark colored fruit and vegetables have something that the body can change into vitamin A. |
Vitamin B changes foods into energy and helps the heart and nervous system(神经系统) to work smoothly. Without it, we will be weak and will not grow. It is found in grains and other foods like beans, nuts, meat and fish. Vitamin B helps to produce red blood cells. It is found in foods like eggs, meat, fish, milk and green leafy vegetables. |
Vitamin C is needed for strong bones and teeth, and for healthy blood vessels(血管). It also helps wounds to heal(意合) quickly. The body stores little vitamin C, so we must get it in foods like oranges, and cabbage. |
Vitamin D increases the levels of calcium(钙) in the blood. Calcium is needed for verve and muscle(肌肉) cells to work normally, as well as to build strong bones. Fish liver oil has vitamin D. In some countries, milk producers add vitamin D to milk so that it will be good for children. |
It may seem easy to say that plants and animals are different. Any child can tell the difference between a tree and a dog. But those differences are far deeper than just what they look like. The cells(细胞) that plants are made up of are different. In other words, the cell wall of plants has something special.
First of all, it's important to find that not all plant cells have a cell wall. Besides, there are many differences of a cell wall based on the kinds of plant. The following is meant to be what a plant cell wall is like.
The cell wall of a plant is on the outside of the cell membrane(膜). It is usually hard and cannot be bent easily, but the degree of flexibility(韧性) of the cell wall is different. It is based on the special use that the cell has in keeping the plant alive. Cells that make up the trunk of a tree are clearly less flexible than cells on a leaf.
Cell walls act in many ways. They serve to protect the plant. They provide support, as well as help in the movement of chemicals and wastes into and out of the cell. More importantly, they control the water that goes in and out. Plants must have good water controlling systems(系统), allowing them to keep water during dry seasons, and get rid of unnecessary water. Plants can't walk around to find water, so being able to control water is very important.
So there you have it —what a plant cell wall is. Of course, there are many other things that are not talked about here. Knowing more about plant cell walls requires further study and research.

When Chen Jiuying read her daughter's letter, she couldn't help crying. Chen and her husband are now working far away from their hometown. Their daughter, Xiao Li, is looked after by her grandparents. Like Chen, many migrant workers(外来务工人员) are dreaming about a better life, so they have to leave their children behind.
According to a survey, there are now about 61 million left-behind children(留守儿童) in poor in China. This has brought about many problems. These children care little about others. They do not do well at school. They lost confidence.
Luckily many Chinese are now thinking about the life of the left-behind children and actions have been taken to help solve the problem.
A charity took place in Beijing before Children's Day. Its aim was to raise (意识) social awareness of leftbehind children. The event was held to raise money from businesses and the public to prepare "love bags". Inside the bags, these are things for children including books, touches, and envelopes and stamps so that children can write to their parents.
The event was started by Chen Weihong, a television host in China. "The leftbehind children don't have enough parental love and family care. They need to be in touch with their parents. We hope our love bags will help them communicate with their parents, and make them happier," he said.
True friends are hard to find. Often you thought you could believe in someone, but later he or she may let you down(让你失望).
A true friend is someone who will always be there for you. Through good times or bad times, they will stand by your side. They will not leave you alone when things get difficult. They will accept you without trying to change you. A friend will bring new and exciting things into your life and make it richer.
True friends will keep your worst secrets as you will keep theirs. They will be honest and you can always believe in them. If you talk to someone who you believe in, you don't have to worry about what you may say. We can enjoy this freedom only with friends.
Friendship is a two-way street. In order to find a true friend and keep the friendship between you, you must do the same thing as well. Be there for your friends when they are in need and share the good times with them. Offer them the same things they give to you. Friendship will break quickly if only one person is giving and putting effort into it.
You will find that there is nothing more valuable than having a true friend by your side to share life with, just as someone says, "There is nothing on this earth more to be prized (珍惜) than true friendship".
