Hi! I'm Jack. I'm in a new school this term. Now let me tell you about my school now. My new school is big and nice. There are one thousand and four hundred students and one hundred and forty teachers in my school. I like the teachers. They are very kind to me. My classmates are very friendly(友好), too. They teach me Chinese and I teach them English.
There are trees, flowers and green grass in my school. They are very beautiful. Behind my school there is a small river. The water in it is quite clean. We can swim in it.
We have no classes on Saturdays or Sundays. Sometimes I go to play football or basketball with my classmates. Sometimes I stay at home and watch TV. Sometimes I go to shops with my father and mother. We all like China.
A young American doctor is asleep when his doorbell rings. It is late at night, but he has to put on his coat to answer it. It is a man. He is standing outside with a hat in his hand. "How do you do?" says the man. "Can you go with me now to a place out of the town? It is quite far from here, but I know you have a car and I can show you the way." "Certainly," says the doctor. "I can go with you now." The car is at the front door. The man gets into the doctor's car and they drive off.
They drive for a long time, and finally the man says, "Here we are. This is my home. Now I give you money and you may go back." "But I must see the patient (病人)," the doctor says. "How can I go back without seeing the patient?" "There's no patient," says the man. "Nobody is ill. I live here. There is no taxi at that time, but a doctor often goes out for night calls (夜诊). So, excuse me. Here is your money. Thank you, doctor. Good night!"
This is the true story of a great woman. Her name was Helen Keller. She was born in 1880 in Alabama in the USA. When Helen was one year and a half, she got ill and then she became blind and deaf.
Her parents tried to do their best for their daughter and they asked a young teacher called Anne Sullivan to their home to teach Helen. Anne herself was almost blind in her youth. Helen was a smart girl but she couldn't hear or talk. She was angry at this. So she was always crying and shouting. Then Anne often went for walks with Helen in the country near her home. After two weeks, Helen became quiet. Anne began to teach her how to spell and Helen learned to write. Boards with lines on them helped her to keep the words straight.
Soon her talents were famous all over the world. There were her stories in newspapers and magazines. By the time she was 17, she was studying French, German, Latin, Physics and many other subjects. She was still blind and deaf. In 1902, she wrote a book The Story of my life. It became well—known all over the world.
In the 13th century, the Italian traveler, Marco Polo, traveled a long way to China, During his stay in China, he saw many wonderful things. One of the things he discovered was that the Chinese used paper money. In western countries, people did not use paper money until the 15th century. However, people in China began to use paper money in the 7th century.
A Chinese man called Cai Lun invented paper almost 2000 years ago. He made it from wood. He took the wood from trees and made it into paper. He then put these pieces of paper together and made them into a book.
Now paper still comes from trees. We use a lot of paper every day! If we keep on wasting so much paper, there will not be any trees on the earth. If there are no trees, there will be no paper. Every day , people throw away about 2800 tons (吨) of paper in our city . It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper. This means that we are cutting nearly 48000 trees every day. Since it takes more than 10 years for a tree to grow, we must start using less paper now. If we don't, we will not have enough time to grow more trees to take the place of those we use for paper.
So how can we save(节约) paper? We can use both sides of every piece of paper, especially when we are making notes .We can choose drinks in bottles instead(代替) of those in paper packets. We can also use cotton handkerchiefs (手帕) and not paper ones . When we go shopping, we can use fewer paper bags. If the shop assistant does give us a paper bag, we can save it and reuse it later.
Everyone can help to save paper. If we all think carefully, we can help protect trees. But we should do it now, before it is too late.
A good book can teach you things beyond(超越) your class. It can open your eyes and clear your minds. If you want to get into a good reading habit, there are a number of ways to develop it.
Plan your time
You should give yourself at least thirty minutes in all for reading every day. When time is set, nothing can change it. For example, make it a habit to read during breakfast or lunch time.
Always carry a book
Wherever you go, take a book with you. When you leave the house, make sure that you always carry a good book as well as your school things. Remember that a book always stays with you.
Find a quiet place
Find a place in your home where you can sit in a comfortable chair. When you read a book, make sure no one will trouble you at that place. There should be no televisions, computers, music or even noisy family members around you.
Have a library day
Have a library card, and you can read as many books as possible in the library. Make it a weekly trip to the library. You can save a lot of money.
Put it on your blog(博客)
One of the best ways to develop a good reading habit is to put it on your blog. If you don't have one, create(创建) one. It's free. Ask your friends and family to go there to share your ideas and offer you suggestions.
