Cindy and Anna were best friends. Some days they could spend hours happily together without any argument, but other days they just could not 1 on what to do.
One day they decided to play in the garden near their school. "Come on, let's play chess," Anna said.
"I don't want to play chess," Cindy replied.
"We always do what you want to do, Cindy. It's my turn to make a 2," Anna said. She was getting a little unhappy and 3, leaving Cindy alone.
Cindy was very angry. 4 she got home, she found she still had Anna's notebook in her schoolbag. "Well, I'm not giving it back to her today. I'm too mad at her," Cindy thought.
The next day at school, their teacher Mr. s Stone 5 their notebooks. But Anna didn't have hers, and she looked 6Cindy knew she should tell Mrs. Stone that she had the notebook, but she was 7 mad at Anna.
When it was time for lunch, Cindy finally told Mrs. Stone the 8 "Thank you for being 9Cindy. I'm sure Anna will be thankful that you have given me her notebook," said Mrs. Stone.
Later, Mrs. Stone asked the two girls together and talked with them. Mrs. Stone helped them 10that it was a good idea to take turns to decide the activity. They became best friends again.
Is a nearby neighbour better than a faraway cousin? An American lady, Anna Lane, believes it's true. Her kind neighbours once helped her out when she was in a big trouble.
Mrs Lane was living alone in a city in Texas, US. The woman in her 70s could do a lot of housework herself. However, she was too old to mow(修剪) her lawn(草坪). Then a big trouble found her. She let the grass grow over 18 inches high and it broke the law in her city. As a result, she was in danger of paying lots of money or even going to prison! Luckily, her neighbour, the Adams brothers, heard the news about her on TV. They decided to do something to help. "We haven't met her yet, but she's 75 years old and she needs some help." said Sam Adams, one of the boys. "That's the least we could do."
The Adams brothers took their mowers( 修剪机) and came to Mrs Lane's house to mow her lawn without telling her. Once they got started, other neighbours saw what was going on and joined in the effort.
Together they worked hard in the sun and finished mowing the whole lawn in about two hours. When Mrs Lane saw what her neighbours did for her, she was surprised and moved to tears(感动得落泪). "I cannot believe this," she said. "They were so kind to spend two hours helping me and I didn't even know their names." As for the Adams brothers, they said they would always be ready to help her.
When the great library of Alexandria burned, the story goes, one book was saved. But it was not a valuable book, and a poor man got it.
The book wasn't very interesting, but between its pages there was something very interesting indeed. It was a thin strip of vellum(羊皮纸) on which was written the secret of the "Touchstone". The touchstone was a small pebble(鹅卵石) that could turn any common metal into pure gold.
The writing explained that it was lying among thousands and thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it. But the secret was this: The real stone would feel warm, while ordinary pebbles are cold.
So the man sold his house, bought a tent, camped on the seashore, and began testing pebbles. He knew that if he picked up normal pebbles and threw them down again because they were cold, he might pick up the same pebbles hundreds of times. So, when he felt one that was cold, he threw it into the sea. He spent a whole day doing this but none of them was the touchstone. Yet he went on and on this way. Pick up a pebble. Cold—throw it into the sea. Pick up another. Throw it into the sea. The days stretched into months and the months into years.
One day, however, about midafternoon, he picked up a pebble and it was warm. He threw it into the sea before he realized what he had done. He was used to throwing each pebble into the sea as soon as he picked it up. So when the one he wanted came along, he still threw it away.
So it is with opportunity(机会). Unless we are vigilant, it's easy to fail to realize an opportunity when it is in hand and it's just as easy to throw it away.
Experts in nutrition(营养) suggest that we should eat at least five different kinds of vegetables and fruit a day. They are very necessary for our health and help our bodies work well. They can help reduce(减少) the risk of getting ill. There are a lot of vegetables and fruit to choose from and they taste delicious.
It's easy to buy our food from the local supermarket, so why do we go to the trouble of growing our own?
Here are several good reasons:
You can pick and eat it at once. When you have tried it, you will agree that vegetables and fruit that are eaten straight from the garden taste better than anything you can buy in a supermarket.
You may want to cut down on your "food miles" — the distance that a product has travelled before it reaches your kitchen. Many food packages are flown halfway across the earth.
Homegrown food is likely to be healthier. Food producers often use fertilizers(化肥) and pesticides(农药) which can end up in your food. If you grow your own, things are different. You might also choose to grow some traditional vegetables and fruit. These often have more of the vitamins, minerals(矿物质) and protein(蛋白质) that keep you healthy.
And you can grow your own even if you only have a small backyard or a balcony(阳台). Some food can grow well in pots, including lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes and carrots. You can recycle plastic bottles and cups to grow something. Just make sure there are holes for drainage(排水) and a small plate under them to catch drops of water.
Happy gardening!
A. Best of all, you can grow your own! B. But where to grow your own is a problem. C. That's not so good for you, or for the planet. D. Food that you grow yourself is always fresh. E. If you have a large garden, growing your own is easy. F. You can control what goes on and into the food you eat. G. So it's better to eat more vegetables and fruit in our daily life. |
As I entered an international high school, all my friends felt surprised at my short hair. This is because, my old school thinks teenage aren't the time for looking pretty. Then I coloured my hair blue. For the first time, I felt free and beautiful. This international school to meet my needs.
I had a education background. I went to public schools, received normal (常规的) education and was required to follow like every other student. Later, I began to wonder this education was truly suitable for me.
However, in the new school my high hopes were not met. For a while, I found myself in a surprising situation as I faced before. It was the biggest challenge I faced in my education-the freedom to try new things. In the old system, I was strongly advised trying new things. But in my new school, it worked the opposite way-we had many chances to try new things. But if I , I must be responsible (负责任的) because I put myself in such risk. Finally, it led me to get into trouble again.
As time went by, I started to find my balance. In fact, none of the education systems in the world are perfect. I am enough to have a chance to bring great value from both systems together. As a result, I've built a system for myself.
Throughout history, people have been interested in knowing how language first began, but no one knows exactly where or how this happened. However, we do know a lot about languages, the language of today and also the languages of earlier times. There are probably about three thousand languages in the world today. Chinese is the language with the most speakers. English, Russian and Spanish are also spoken by millions of people. On the other hand, some languages in the world have less than one hundred speakers.
There are several important families of languages in the world. For example, most of the languages of Europe are in one large family called Indo-European. The original language of this family was spoken about 4,500 years ago. Many of the present-day languages of Europe and India are modern forms of the language of 4,500 years ago.
Languages are always changing. The English of today is very different from the English of 500 years ago. In time, some even die out completely. About 1,000 years ago, English was a little known relative of German spoken on one of the borders of Europe.
If a language has a number of speakers, or if it is very old, there may be differences in the way it is spoken in different areas. That is, the language may have several dialects. Chinese is a good example of dialect differences. Chinese has been spoken for thousands of years by many millions of people. The differences between the dialects of Chinese are so great that speakers of Chinese from some parts of China can't understand speakers from other parts.
