Many teenagers feel that the1important people in their lives are their friends. They believe that their family members, especially their2, don't know them3their friends. In big families, it is quite often for brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they can only go to their friends for4.
It is very important for teenagers to have one good friend5a circle of friends. Even when they are not with6friends, they usually spend a lot of time talking among themselves on the phone. This conversation is very7in children's growing up. Because friends can talk8something difficult to say to their family members.
However, parents often try9their children's friends for them. The question of "choice" is an interesting one. Have you ever thought of the following questions?
10chooses your friends? Yourself or your parents? Have you got a good friend your parents don't like?
Your answers are welcome.
If you want to study abroad, letters of recommendation(推荐信)are very important. So how can we get a perfect letter of recommendation? Here is something you should notice.
Who: Letters of recommendation are the most powerful when they are written by teachers, coaches, and youth group advisers who know you well. The people you ask should be able to describe your skills and your success as well as your personality(个性). Colleges prefer letters from junior year teachers, because they know your recent work the most. Read instructions carefully, since some colleges may request a science or math teacher.
What: Since most letters of recommendation are full of praise for the applicant(申请人), colleges that take them seriously are trying to get to know the true you. The best letters are those that share personal stories about you and show the important qualities(品质).
Why: Letters of recommendation can often be quite important when two students are compared and colleges can only pick one.
How: There's a good chance that the more information you give your recommender, the better the letter will be. I suggest that all students prepare an activity resume(简历)that includes the following: after-school activities; community service involvement; leadership positions; awards; employment; and what you've done during your last three summers.
Welcome to Happy Days Club. It is a great place with fun and excitement. My name is Sam. I joined a club called "passing help" last month. Now let me tell you why I joined it.
One evening this May, on my way home my old car was broken. It was 25 miles from my home. I wanted to get a ride, but there was no car. It was also hard to take a taxi. I decided to take a bus home. I went to a bus stop nearby. After a while, a bus came, but it did not go to my town, the bus driver was a young woman. She was kind and she told me which bus I should take. I waited there for about thirty minutes, but no bus came. At last a car came to me and a woman came out of the car. She was just the bus driver. "When I reached the bus station, I got to know that the bus to your town couldn't come, so I returned here. I just can't leave you here," she said, "Get in my car and I will take you back to your home." "It is a long way." I said. "Come on, sir," she said, "Let's go." On the way she told me a story. A few days ago, there wasn't gas in her car. An old man drove her up to a gas station and then back to her car.
When we got to my home, I wanted to give her some money to thank her, but she didn't accept. "I only want to help others and so something nice for somebody. Pass it along." She said. From then on, I began to pass help.
Now natural materials are becoming more difficult to be found, many countries are looking for other ways of keeping materials. Recycling becomes more and more important. In order to save energy, in some countries, waste paper, cars and many other things have been recycled and again used in many different ways for many years.
In the USA, a publishing company has brought out several books on pollution and waste in the United States. The books are made of recycled paper—the paper that has been used as paper before. In this way, several thousand trees are saved. One clever schoolboy has worked out that if every schoolbook in the USA was recycled, there would be enough paper for fifty packets of peanuts(花生的包装)for every child in the world for five years.
Several companies are trying to make containers(集装箱)from a hard plastic material. When containers are finished, they can be used as building materials. If mountains of empty cans all over the world can be changed into building materials, houses are not too expensive and there would be a new source of material.
It's never a real problem for us when the weather gets cold. We can put on more clothes, stay next to a fire place or simply travel to a warmer city to spend the winter – people have many different ways of dealing with the cold.
But things are not as easy for plants. Unlike humans, plants can't move to run from the cold or produce heat to keep themselves warm. So how do they manage to live in the freezing winter?
Actually plants have their own ways too.
According to researcher Amy Zanne, the cold is a big challenge for plants. Their living tissues(活组织) can be hurt when they freeze. "It's like a plant's frostbite(冻疮)," Zanne told Science Daily. Also, the cold can cause air bubbles(气泡)to form in the plant's water system. "If enough of these air bubbles come together, they will be harmful to the plant," she explained.
To live through cold weather, plants have developed three ways, according to the study.
Some plants, such as oak trees, avoid frostbite by dropping their leaves before the winter comes, which can shut off the flow of water between roots and leaves, and they grow new leaves and water transport cells when the warm spring returns.
Other plants, pine trees for example, protect themselves by making their water transport cells thinner, which makes it easier for cells to travel among air bubbles.
The third strategy is also the most special – some plants die on the ground in winter and start growing as new plants from seeds(种子)when conditions get warmer.
However, the tudy also found that these smart ways were developed over a very long period of time. This causes scientists to worry that plants may not be able to deal with human – caused climate change(气候变化), which has only started recently.
Scientists are hoping that this study can help people find possible ways to save plants from the danger from climate change.

Computers are good tools(工具). The Internet is also good. But some people spend too much time on line. They can't stop. Doctors say this is a new sickness. They call this sickness Internet Addiction Disorder(互联网成瘾症)(IAD).
People with IAD are online a lot. They often spend hours talking with friends or playing online games. Many people with IAD spend more time on the Internet than with family or friends.
Do you have IAD? Think about these questions: How many hours a day are you online? Is it a lot or a little? When you are not online, are you thinking about playing a computer game or checking your messages? When you are online, do you forget the time? Do you get angry when you can't play a game?
If you have IAD, what can you do? Mr. Ivan Goldberg has some ideas. First, ask yourself, "Why am I online a lot? Then try to take a break. In this way, you can have a good social life with other friends."
