I climbed the stairs slowly, carrying a big suitcase, my father following me with two more. By the time I got to the third floor, I was 1 and at the same time feeling lonely. Worse still, Dad 2 a step and fell, sending my new suitcases rolling down the stairs. "Damn!" he cried out, his face turning red. I knew 3 was ahead. Whenever Dad's face turns red, look out! How could I ever get him to finish unloading the car without 4 at me and making a scene in front of the other girls, girls I would have to spend the5 years with?
Doors were 6and eyes were peering (偷窥) out, as Dad walked with difficulty close behind. I felt it in my bones that my college life wasn't getting off to a 7start.
"God bless me to 8 the room quickly," I said to myself, feeling ashamed. "Get him into a chair and calmed down." But then again, would there be a chair in Room 316? Or would it be a(n) 9 room?
We arrived at Room 316 10. I turned the key in the lock and 11 the door open, with Dad still complaining (抱怨) about a hurting knee or 12. I put my head into the room, expecting the 13. But to my surprise, the room wasn't empty at all! It had furniture, curtains, a TV, and 14paintings on the walls.
And there on a well-made bed sat Amy, my new 15, listening to music. Greeting me with a nod, she said in a soft voice, "Hi, you must be Cori." Then, she 16 the music and looked over at my 17"And of course, you're Mr. Faber," she said smiling 18. "Would you like a glass of iced tea?" Dad's face turned decidedly less 19 before he could bring out a "yes."
I knew there and 20 that Amy and I would be friends! And my years of college would certainly be a success.

Eep, the eldest daughter of the Gollum family, is a curious girl. She is not satisfied to stay in the small cave for a lifetime, but wants to see the strange world outside the cave.
Painting and writing on walls is nothing new. In prehistoric times, people in Africa and Europe painted pictures of animals and people in caves. Graffiti has been found at ancient sites in Greece, Italy, Syria and Iraq. In the Roman town of Pompeii in Italy, archaeologists found a lot of graffiti written in Latin, including political and romantic messages, and even some magic spells!
In the 1970s, young people in New York used pens to write their names, or "tags", on walls around the city. One of the first "taggers" was Demetrius, a teenager from a Greek family. He wrote his tag on walls in his neighborhood on the way to school. Other teenagers saw Demetrius's tag and started writing their own tags on walls, buses and subway trains all over New York. Then, some teenagers stopped using pens and started using paints. Their tags were bigger and more colorful and appeared on trains, buses and walls around the city. In the 1990s and 2000s, a lot of graffiti artists started to draw pictures on buildings in public places.
In many countries, it is a crime to paint on public walls and street artists can have problems with the police. In some other countries, street art is permitted in certain places. Nowadays, street art is more popular with the public. In some cities, there are street art festivals. In Bristol in the UK, there is a street art festival in August every year. Artists paint all the buildings in a street. Lots of people come to watch the artists and take photos. Street art can be seen in galleries too. There have been exhibitions of street art in galleries in Paris, London and Los Angeles.
Most street artists are young people who paint in their neighborhood or home city. Many of them use the Internet to communicate and share photos of their pictures with other street artists around the world. Although we don't know what will happen to street art in the future, we can be sure that it is here to stay!

One Sunday morning in June my mother walked into my room. "Surprise!" she said, proudly holding up a yellow dress with black and white stripes. "I made it just for you. What do you think?"
I bit my tongue. How could I tell Mum it was the ugliest dress I had ever seen?
"It's perfect for church," my mother continued delightedly. "I wish someone had made a dress like this for me."
Too bad you can't wear it, I thought. But I knew Mum had spent a lot of time on the dress. Only the world's most ungrateful daughter would refuse. Unwillingly I put it on.
All through church I prayed, "Lord, let me get out of here without anyone seeing me." Especially Dennis Pearce, the boy I had a crush on. He was one of the cutest boys at Neptune High School. Although we were in some of the same classes, Dennis had never taken any notice of me. Every time I got near him, I became tongue-tied.
At the end of the service I hurried to the door. But I had to wait on the steps while my parents chatted with their friends. Just a little while longer…Then out of the corner of my eye I saw the Pearce approaching. Before I could escape, Dennis was right beside me.
I started talking a mile a minute, hoping if I kept it up he wouldn't notice my awful dress.
"I'm going to college in September," I said.
"That's great," Dennis replied, "I got accepted to police academy."
"Wow!" I said. Somehow I kept the conversation going. Soon we were walking to the parking lot together. The next thing I knew Dennis had asked me out on a date!
We fell in love through college, and finally got married. Months after our wedding I asked Dennis if he remembered the day he had first asked me out.
"You bet I do," he said. "You were always quiet in school, almost coldhearted. I didn't think you'd be much fun. But you were so lively when we talked on the church steps, I wanted to get to know you better." Maybe that zebra-striped yellow dress wasn't what I would have chosen, but that day it was the perfect dress for me.
Everybody knows that Earth spins from west to east. That is to say, it appears to be turning counterclockwise (逆时针) rapidly when viewed from above the North Pole. But what if Earth started spinning the other way?
Scientists from Germany have made a computer simulation in which Earth spins in the opposite direction — clockwise when viewed from above the North Pole. This showed them some interesting things about the weather and geography on Earth, Live Science reported.
As Earth spins in a counterclockwise direction, it shapes certain ocean currents (洋流). The direction of ocean currents, together with winds, produces different weathers around the globe. But a backward spin changes the ocean currents and winds. Western areas of the lands on Earth cool down as the eastern parts warm up. Winters become even colder in northwestern
Europe, while eastern Russia becomes warmer than before. Rain no longer falls on the planet's wettest places.
Another result of a backward spin is that Earth becomes greener. Scientists found that global desert (沙漠) areas reduce from 42 million square kilometers to 3l million square kilometers. This may have something to do with the changing weather. Therefore, you can see rich green landscapes from Central Africa to the Middle East, which are mostly covered with deserts now. More surprisingly, the Sahara Desert becomes an oasis.
However, deserts don't disappear. They just appear in some places in which they never appeared before. Deserts would cover North America, where countries like the United States and Canada lie. Sand dunes would replace the Amazon rainforest in South America.
A backward spin would keep the main features (特征) of Earth's geography, such as the size, shapes and positions of lands and oceans. But it would change the interactions between circulating air, ocean and geography, lead scientist Florian Ziemen told Live Science.
If you are in charge of a project, the key to success is getting everyone to volunteer to help you. As a director, I point. I suggest. I gently push the actors in the direction I want them to go.
In the 1986 movie, Nothing in Common, Jackie Gleason's character, Max Basner, gets fired from his job as a clothing salesman. The scene, shot on a boat, shows Max's despair about being out of work. I was looking for some gesture that would allow Max to show his feelings.
Jackie had far more experience at everything than I did, and at first I was frightened. What could I possibly tell "The Great One" about acting? Out of fear I decided to direct by suggestion, and sat down with Gleason to talk about the scene. "So Max is sad, right?" I said.
Gleason nodded.
"And he's probably still carrying his pens with name on them — the ones he used to hand out to his customers, right?"
Gleason nodded.
"So what would you want to do with the pens after you were fired?"
He was silent for a moment, "Why don't I throw them overboard?"
I stood up and turned toward the crew. "Hey, everybody, Jackie has a wonderful idea. Let's shoot it."
After filming the scene, Gleason called me over and smiled at me, "Garry, what kind of wonderful idea am I going to have tomorrow?"

Most of us have made an exercise plan, but only a few can follow it. WebMD (an American website) has listed the following tips for making exercise a habit in your life.
Remember, there's no rule that says you have to go to a sports center or buy equipment like swimming suits. Many types of activities, such as push-up, can be done whenever it is rainy or snowy.
Don't go home first. Few people are so motivated that they will go out again and exercise after they go home and change clothes.
Tiredness is not an excuse. While exercising, you breathe deeply and your body makes better use of the oxygen exchange. Then, you will feel energetic.
It's great when your clothes fit better. You can lift heavier things or take exercise longer. There's something good too, like getting a good night's sleep or thinking more clearly.
Not everyone can start out with 10,000 steps a day. Use a pedometer, and find out your daily steps. And then, try your best to walk 300 extra steps each day. Finally, you can reach 10,000 steps a day.
A. Exercise after work.
B. Record your daily steps.
C. Do activities you enjoy.
D. Exercise even when you are tired.
E. Notice that you are better than before.

"Olyvia, love is simple. You don't have to do much to make someone happy." That was what my mother said to me when I was a child. More a year ago, my good friend Kaylee told me about her unforgettable trip to Gary, a small town on Lake Michigan southeast of Chicago. After (hear) Kaylee's story, I decided to go there myself.
When I told my parents about the decision, they didn't agree first. They said I didn't know much about the place. They were worried that it was not safe for me to go there. Thankfully, after I (explain) my plan to them in detail, they said yes.
When our group arrived in Gary, I noticed different the town was from where I lived. There were few stores or restaurants in the town. Houses were built on small hills. Many of them had (break) doors or windows. As part of our volunteering, my job was to help the local people to repair their houses. The work days were long and tiring, it was really good to see the houses taking on a new look day by day.
The people there were also different. They seemed (enjoy) every moment in life. The community was like a big family. Everyone knew each other and was there when someone needed help. A little thing would make them happy. I couldn't find (word) to describe their joy when the kids received an ice-cream, a ball or even a kiss.
I am so glad that I had this life-changing experience. I truly learned meaning of what my mother said. You don't need to do much to make a difference to others' lives.
