The Pony
by Vivien Wad
I am a little horse, who never will be tall, For I'm a Shetland pony, bred to be small. I live with other horses, where I am stabled(关在马厩), The work I do is called "riding for the disabled". I can carry little children, because I am so small, My nature is very gentle, would never let them fall. |
Most children need help, to be placed upon my back, As I lead them carefully, around the circular track(圆形跑道). Some are afraid, riding me removes(消除)their fears, To hear all their laughter, is music to my ears. I'm sure these children, are excited as can be, Waiting for their next vis叹 to come and ride on me. |
A cafe in Japan is using robot waiter controlled(控制)from home by the disabled.
The robots, about as tall as a seven-year-old child, send out sound and video over the Internet, allowing the disabled to control them with computers.
Engineers behind the project said that they hope to provide jobs for people who have difficulty in moving their bodies.
If it is successful, there will be a permanent(永久的)cafe before the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
"Everyone should have the freedom to work in the way they like," said Masatane Muto, an ALS patient and one of the leaders of the project. "I want to send out the message toward 2020 that you can show your friendly behaviour even if you have disabilities."
The cafe in Tokyo will open on weekends from November 26 to December 7.
They have also been used in classrooms by students who cannot go to school because of illness or other reasons.
"I want to create a world in which people who can't move their bodies can work too," said Kentaro Yoshifuji, the CEO of Ory Lab, the developer of the robots.
Ypshifuji had some illness as a child that left him socially isolated. He had to stay away from others. This experience drove him to study robotics at Tokyo's Waseda University in the hopes of connecting(联系)people through robots.
Dear World:
My son starts school today.
It's going to be strange and new to him for a while, and I wish you would treat him gently
You see, up to now, he's been king of the roost(小皇帝).
He's been leader of the backyard.
I have always been around to repair his wounds(伤口), and to comfort his feelings.
But now—things are going to be different.
This morning, he's going to walk down the front steps, say goodbye and start on his great adventure(冒险) that will probably include wars and sad stories.
To live his life in the world will need love and confidence.
So, World, I wish you would take him by his young hand and teach him the things he will have to know.
Teach him—but gently, if you can.
Teach him that for every bad man there is a hero; that for every enemy there is a friend.
Teach him the wonders of books.
Give him quiet time to watch the birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and flowers on the green hill.
Teach him it is far better to fail than to cheat(欺骗).
Teach him to believe his own ideas, even if everyone tells him they are wrong.
Teach him to close his ears to groups of shouting people…and to stand and fight if he thinks he's right.
Teach him gently World, but don't treat him too kindly, because only the test of fire makes fine steel.
This is a big order, World, but see what you can do.
He's such a nice little boy.
A: Hi, how are you doing, Sally?
B: Great.
A: Have you heard our school is going to have a charity sale?
B: Yes. Our class is preparing for it.
A:
B: We'd like to sell cupcakes. They're tasty and home-made!
A: How much are you going to charge for each cake?
B: Only two dollars for each one.
A: So you may sell a lot.
B: Sure. Class 3 sold over 300 cakes last year.
A: That sounds like a good idea.
B: How about your class?
A: Our idea is quite different from the cupcakes. We want to sell an "experience"!
B:
A: People can pay to dance with the principal(校长), or fly in a hot-air balloon above our school.
B: Interesting!
A: Yes, it's the best idea we came up with.
B: Maybe. I think it'll be difficult to organize, but good luck!
A. What do you mean? B. And it'll help us raise a lot of money. C. But it's too expensive. D. The price is lower than that in the shops. E. We hope we can sell more. F. What a strange idea! G. What ideas does your class have? |

"Don't tell anyone," Jennifer said. "It's a secret "
Reagan sighed(叹气). Jennifer wanted everything to be a secret. But Reagan was getting tired of keeping secrets, especially from her best friend Lena.
"Hey, guys," Lena said, walking over and sitting next to Reagan and Jennifer at the table. "What are you talking about?"
"Well—" Reagan just began to say.
"Reagan! You can't tell her," Jennifer said. "It's a secret. You can't tell other people's secrets"
"But she should know this. It's about—"
Jennifer narrowed her eyes at Reagan. "If you can't keep a secret, I'll have to find another friend who can."
"But this isn't really a secret," Reagan said.
"Anything can be a secret. It's more fun that way."
"Well, it's not fun for the people who don't know the secret." Lena got up and walked away.
Reagan stood up. "I'll keep your secret because I'm your friend," she told Jennifer, "but I don't want to know any more secrets. Don't tell me anything I can't tell Lena. She's one of my best friends, and I don't like making her feel left out." Reagan turned and walked off after Lena.
"Wait!" Jennifer said. "You can tell Lena that tryouts(选拔)for the play are being moved up to Thursday. She should know because she's going to the tryouts, too."
Reagan smiled. "Secrets are fine sometimes. But Lena's our friend. You shouldn't want to keep things from her."
"You're right," Jennifer said. "Let's go to find her and tell her about tryouts right now."
