When people communicate, they use more than words. People's body language1important information just like speech does. When2lies with their words, their body language often tells the truth. The next time you wonder if someone is telling you the truth,3watching their hands.
A person4is being honest will usually turn one or both of their palms (手掌) towards5person. If a person is beginning to "open up" or share important information, you may notice him6his palms towards you.7most body language, this unconscious (无意识的) gesture usually gives the other person the8that the speaker is speaking honestly.
When people lie, they hide their palms9putting their hands behind their back or holding them. Others will keep their hands in their pockets if they10or trying to hide information. Salespeople are11trained to watch out for this specific example of body language when a person is saying that he can't afford12product or service. Sometimes professional liars try to use open-palm gestures13others. But a careful listener may tell it is a lie through their body language14lack of eye contact and touching the nose.
Human body language and communication are directly connected. By showing that you are honest15your palms towards people, your body language pushes others to tell you the truth.
When was the last time you gave or received a hug? Do your parents hug you before you go to school? In Western countries, it is quite common to greet close friends or relatives with a hug.
You might hug your teammates after winning a basketball game. If one of your friends is having a bad day, you can hug him to cheer him up. Friends who haven't seen each other for a long time will usually hug each other when meeting.
Of course, people in different countries have different opinions when it comes to hugging. After coming to China, I've noticed that Chinese people are generally more reluctant (不情愿的) to hug than those are in my home country, the USA.
My Chinese friends told me that hugging is considered to be very intimate (亲密的) in their culture. It usually only happens between people who are really close to each other, like couples. Chinese people don't usually hug in public either.
But people's attitudes towards hugging can also change. I remember watching a video story about a "hugging party" that was held in Shanghai. A local artist held the party, inviting strangers and asking them to hug each other.
The Chinese participants clearly looked uncomfortable. However, after the party, several of them changed their minds. They decided that hugging doesn't have to be awkward (尴尬的) and can actually be quite nice. So next time you see your mum or dad, give her/him a hug—see how it makes you feel.
If the eyes are the windows of the soul, then the body is the mirror of our feelings. If we are feeling great, we may give our body signals. If we look at someone else's body, we can often tell how he or she is feeling by his or her body signals. So reading body language signals is a great tool in daily communication.
In case (假使) you don't think that learning how to read and use body language is important, here are some numbers for you. 7%of the information we receive is from what people actually say, and 38%of the information we receive is from the tone (语气) and the speed of their voice; while 55%of the information we receive is from their body language.
These non-verbal (非语言的) signals will help you a lot, but you still need to focus on what people are saying. If you focus too much on their body language signals, you and the people may feel uncomfortable.
It is useful to be able to read people's body language, but it is useful to learn how to send the right signals and avoid the wrong signals too. Body language maybe given several interpretations. Many signals have different meanings, depending on the person and the situation. Be sure of it when you are trying to read a body language signal.
The idea of what shaking the head means is not always the same in different countries. Maybe some visitors would be surprised when they first come to India. When they talk to an Indian, they would find he would often shake his head. The visitors might think that the Indian doesn't like what they say. But in fact, they would be completely wrong. Indians always shake their heads when they talk to others. It doesn't mean "No". If someone wants to visit India, he should know this, or he will be in trouble.
One day, a foreign officer went to India on business. He hired a car and asked an Indian to drive him. When he told his driver to take him to his office, the Indian shook his head at once. The officer said again and the driver shook his head again. At last the officer, of course, got angry.
"How dare you refuse my order?" he shouted. "Drive me to my office at once!"
The driver answered in a loud voice too. "Yes, sir!" But to the officer's surprise, the driver shook his head at the same time.
The car started and the foreign officer was now too surprised to say a word. He thought about it for a while, and then he nodded with a smile, "'No' means "Yes' here!"
Body language is the quiet, secret and most powerful language of all! It is said that our body movements communicate about 50 per cent of what we really mean while words only express 7 per cent. So while your mouth is closed your body is just saying…
Arms How you hold your arms shows how open and receptive you are to people you meet. If you keep your arms to the sides of your body or behind your back, this suggests you are not afraid of taking on whatever comes your way. Outgoing people generally use their arms with big movements, while quieter people keep them close to their bodies. If someone upsets you, just cross your arms to show you're unhappy!
Head When you want to appear confident, keep your head level. If you are a monitor in class, you can also take on this position when you want your words to be taken seriously. However, to be friendly in listening or speaking, you must move your head a little.
Legs Your legs tend to move around a lot more than normal when you are nervous or telling lies. If you are at interviews, try to keep them still!
Posture (姿势) A good posture makes you feel better about yourself. If you are feeling down, you normally don't sit straight, with your shoulders inwards. This makes breathing more difficult, which can make you feel nervous or uncomfortable.
Mouth When you are thinking, you often purse your lips. You might also use this position to hold back an angry comment you don't wish to show. However, it will probably still be noticed and people will know you're not pleased.
Face When you lie, you might put on a false face. But that expression would crack briefly, allowing displays of true emotions such as happiness, sadness, disgust (厌恶) and fear to come through.
Body language is used by people for sending messages to one another. It is very helpful it can help make you easily understood by others. When you are talking with others, you are not only using words, also using expressions and body movements. Body language (include) your facial expressions and gestures when you are communicating with other people. It is important part of social etiquette (社交礼仪) and the proper use of body language can make your (communicate) more effective (有效的), especially when it comes to foreign friends who can't speak your language. That means you could convey (传达) most of your information by body language even if you don't know what (other) are speaking!
Different countries have different body language. When you use a foreign language, it is important (know) the meaning of gestures in the foreign country. (use) body language in a correct way will help communicate with people and make the stay in a foreign country easy and (comfortably).
In a word, I think it is important in our (life) to learn and use body language.
We use both words and gestures to express our feelings, but the problem is that these words and gestures can be understood in different ways. So does laughter or crying. There are also a number of striking similarities in the way different animals show the same feelings. Dogs, tigers and humans, for example, often show their teeth when they are angry.
Fear is another emotion that is shown in much the same way all over the world. In Chinese and in English literature, a phrase like "he went pale and began to tremble" suggests that the man is either very afraid or he has just got a very big shock. In Chinese "surprise" can be described in a phrase like "they stretched out their tongues". Sticking out your tongue in English is an insulting gesture or expresses strong dislike.
Experiments in America have shown that women are usually better than men at recognizing fear, anger, love and happiness on people's faces.
A. Other studies show that older people usually find it easier to recognize or understand body language than younger people do. B. Even in the same culture, people differ in ability to understand and express feelings. C. It is true that a smile means the same thing in any language. D. This is probably because they are born with those behaviour patterns. E. However, "he opened his eyes wide" is used to suggest anger in Chinese whereas in English it means surprise. |
