It was the final game for my eight-year-old son's soccer team. Near the end of the match, the score was two to one, my son's team being ahead. Parents sat around the field, offering1.
There were less than ten seconds2and the ball stopped in front of one of my son's teammates, Mickey. With cheering shouts3the field, Mickey went back a little and kicked the ball with everything he had. All around me the crowd became crazy and4. Mickey had5.
Then there was a complete6. Mickey had scored, but into the wrong gate—the7went into the gate of my son's team, ending the game in a draw (平局). You see, Mickey has a serious8in his head, which makes his IQ lower than that of normal children of the same age. And for him, he didn't understand what a wrong goal was. All goals were9by a happy hug from Mickey. He had been known to hug the players whom he was fighting against when they scored.
The silence was10broken when Mickey, whose face11with joy, caught my son, hugged him and shouted, "I scored! I scored! Everybody won! Everybody won!" For a moment I held my breath, not sure what my son would do or say. In fact, I didn't12to worry at that time. I watched through tears, when I found my son raised his hand and started to call out13, "Well done, Mickey!" Soon, members from both teams got together around Mickey,14him on his goal.
Later that night, my daughter asked15had won. "Everybody won," I smiled and replied.
Hi, dear boys and girls! Do you know how to be a healthy kid? Here are some rules you should follow.
First, eat different foods, especially fruit and vegetables. You may have a favourite food. But you'd better eat something different. If you eat different foods, you will probably get more nutrients (营养物质) your body needs.
Second, drink water and milk as often as possible. When you're really thirsty, cold water is the NO. 1 choice. Milk is a great drink that can give you most calcium (钙) your body needs to grow strong bones (骨头).
Third, listen to your body. How do you feel when you are full? When you are eating, notice how your body feels and when your stomach (胃) feels comfortably full. Eating too much will not make you feel comfortable but make you fat.
Fourth, limit (限制) screen time. Screen time is the time you use to watch TV, DVDs and videos, or play computers. It is good to take more exercise such as basketball, bike riding and swimming. You can't watch TV for more than two hours a day.
Fifth, be active. One thing you'd like to do as a kid is to find out which activity you like best. Find ways to be active every day.
Follow these rules and you can be a healthy kid.
A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apples he grew.
One day, his friend gave the farmer a young apple tree and told him to take it home and plant it. The farmer was pleased with the gift, but when he got home, he did not know where to plant it.
He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the fruit. If he planted the tree in one of his fields, his neighbors would come at night and steal some of the apples. If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the fruit.
Finally he planted the tree in his woods where no one could see it. But without sunlight and good soil, the tree soon died.
Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place. "What's the difference?" the farmer said angrily. "If I had planted the tree near the road, strangers would have stolen the fruit. If I had planted the tree in one of my fields, my neighbors would have come at night and stolen some of the apples. If I had planted it near my house, my own children would have taken the fruit."
"Yes," said the friend, "but at least someone could have enjoyed the fruit. Now you not only have robbed (抢夺) every one of the fruit, but also you have destroyed a good apple tree!"
In Britain you may often hear "Drop in any time" or "Come to see me soon", but you can't really do that. People just say those things to make you feel welcome. It is better to telephone before visiting someone at home. If you receive a written invitation to an event that says "RSVP", you should reply to let the person who sent the invitation know whether or not you plan to go.
You should never accept an invitation unless you really plan to go. You may refuse by saying "Thank you for inviting me, but I will not be able to come.". If, after accepting, you are unable to go, be sure to tell those who are expecting you as soon as possible that you will not be there. Although it is not necessarily expected that you give a gift to your host, it is considered polite to do so, especially if you have been invited for a meal. Chocolate, or a small gift is all appropriate (合适的). A thank-you note or a telephone call after the visit is also considered polite and is an appropriate way to express your appreciation for the invitation.
Last year, I went to a summer camp in the United States with my classmates. It was my first time to go abroad.
I lived with a host family in Los Angeles for five days. My host family was friendly and gave me lots of advice. For example, they said I should say "excuse me" if I have to interrupt (打断) someone or ask for directions.
I also took some classes. They were different from the classes I had had back home. In the US, each class is like a seminar. Students join groups, speaking freely and creating a cheerful atmosphere (氛围). I had to work hard to learn more vocabularies, so I could better communicate with my international classmates. I used to pay little attention to my word usage (使用), but now I pay more attention.
During my visit, I also went to some famous universities in Boston, New York and Washington, D. C. We learned about the history behind the universities. At MIT (麻省理工学院), we saw lots of names on a wall in the hall. The tour guide told us they were the names of students who had lost their lives during wars. I was inspired (鼓舞) by the fact that they fought for their country.
Parents shouldn't children because it's the nature of children.
Jack, quickly, or you will be late for school!
The horses on the grassland every day.
I think we should our motherland.
The girl study hard.
Recently, a foreign student in China gave a very touching answer to the question: What should China be proud of? It was (wide) spread online.
Emma is from Canada. She came to China four years ago. Now she is university student in Ningbo. The following is China in her eyes." (find)a job in China can be really simple. There are more job. (chance) here than any other country in the world."
"Its public security is great. I (travel) many countries so far, and I think China is really safe."
"About 400 million Chinese are studying English. China has become the country has the largest number of English speakers in non-English speaking countries."
"The speed of Chinese trains is high. On my (three) visit to my friend in Beijing. I took a train there. From Ningbo 68. Beijing, the train runs about 1,434 kilometres for nearly seven hours."
"I think there (be) many more things China should be proud of. I believe China will be much (good) than other countries."
Most of us think the telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. In fact, an Italian named Antonio Meucci was officially recognised (认定) as the inventor a few years ago. Who is Meucci and why wasn't he known for his invention at the time?
Antonio Meucci was born in Italy in 1808. He studied engineering and drawing. During his studies, Meucci started to experiment with electricity. When two places were connected with wires, people in those places could hear each other talk.
In 1850, Meucci and his wife, Esterre, moved to New York. Meucci was worried about his wife, because she had become very ill. To solve this problem, he connected metal cables between his home and his workshop. This way, they could talk to each other conveniently.
Meucci invited a group of people to see his new invention. They listened in amazement as the voice of a singer was heard through the wires.
Even worse, Meucci never applied for a patent (专利) on his invention. Meanwhile, Alexander Graham Bell was working on the same idea and in 1876 the patent for the telephone was given to him.
In 2002, more than a century after Meucci's death, his work was finally recognised by the government.
A. He discovered that sound could travel through metal cables. B. However, he wasn't the first person to think of the idea. C. Unfortunately, only a few people attended this talk. D. He will now be known all over the world as the telephone's inventor. E. He needed to keep in touch with her at all times. |
