Many students who study literature (文学) aren't interested in science. And many1students show little interest in literature. After all, literature and science are often considered two totally different subjects. Chen Geng, however,2thinks so. The 28-year-old is a Ph. D. student at Peking University. She studies engineering. But now, she is3known for her love for poems.
Under the influence of the senior, Chen Geng signed up for some TV programs. Chen became famous4taking part in the Chinese Poetry Quiz Show (《中国诗词大会》) . Her deep knowledge of poems5many people. Chen reached the final round several times. Unluckily, careless mistakes had kept her from winning. Finally, last year, she came6with a perfect performance. Chen, however, says the joy of taking part in the show isn't winning.7, it is learning more about poems. She also enjoys meeting people who share her love.
Chen became interested in poetry at a young age. She8spend hours reading poems every day. Chen says Chinese poems are9but beautiful. It fits her personality well. This also makes many people feel very strange. Chen is so interested in poems, why didn't she even read Chinese? For this, she has her own ideas. The Chinese Paddlefish Is Now Extinct
China's Yangtze River is the world's third-longest river. It is home to nearly 400 kinds of fish. However, the Chinese paddlefish, once common in the area, is no longer a member of this ecosystem. Scientists from China said recently that the fish had completely disappeared. The fish likely disappeared sometime between 2005 and 2010. "It's very sad," said Zeb Hogan, a U.S. biologist. "We've lost a special animal. There is no hope of recovery."
The Chinese paddlefish was one of the world's largest freshwater fish. It could grow to seven meters. The fish has a big nose that got it the nickname "elephant fish." The Chinese paddlefish was an ancient species. It first appeared in the Jurassic (侏罗纪) period. After existing for 200 million years, the species finally disappeared.
About 25 tons of Chinese paddlefish were caught each year during the 1970s. And in 1981, the building of the Gezhouba Dam divided the paddlefish into two groups. The two groups could not mate (交配) with each other. As a result, the species' population became even smaller.
Scientists warn that many freshwater fish species in the Yangtze River are in danger. The Chinese paddlefish was only the first to disappear. Luckily, China has taken action. In January, the country started a ten-year fishing ban (禁令) on the Yangtze River.
On winter nights, the wind usually blows strongly. Most of us stay inside our warm homes. Few of us think about the homeless. They have no choices but to sleep on the streets. Some of them are so poor that they have no money to buy food.
A young man in Birmingham, England, decided to do something about this. Every night, he puts on a Spider-Man suit and gives food to the homeless he meets. He makes sure that these people won't go hungry.
The man refuses to make his name public. The local people call him the "Birmingham Spider-Man." The young man hopes his action will show others that everybody should give a helping hand.
The 24-year-old started his night rounds in 2015. Every night at 9, he buys some sandwiches. Then, he finds a quiet alley (小巷) and puts on his "uniform". After that, the "Spider-Man" starts handing his food out to people in need.
The man said he wore the Spider-Man suit in order to draw attention. Without the suit, few people took a second look at him when he was handing out food. When people see the "Spider-Man," however, they come over and ask what he is doing.
"The Birmingham Spider-Man" has already attracted lots of attention. Many people have offered to give away money to him. But the young man never accepts donations. Instead, he encourages people to go out and help people in need on their own. He said, "If more people offer a helping hand, the cold winter nights won't be so cold any longer."

She loved to bake. She loved putting a smile on everyone's face. Last August she made a beautiful birthday cake for her daddy, and it had fondant and looked like it had blue agate crystals. Kobe's birthday cake looked like it was professionally decorated. She made the best chocolate chip cookies.
Gigi was confident but not in an impolite way. At school she offered the boy's basketball coaches to help give the boys' basketball team some pointers, like the triangle offense. She was very much like her daddy and they both liked helping people learn new things and master them. They were great teachers.
Gigi was very sweet. She always made sure everybody was okay and she was our shepherd. She always kept our family together. She loved family traditions, and family movie night was important to her. She always looked out for everyone. She was very much in tune with our feelings and wanted the best for us.
Gianna knew how to read, speak and write Mandarin (普通话), she knew Spanish and had great grades and kept them up all while becoming a great basketball player.
Gigi would have most likely become the best player in the WNBA. She would have made a huge difference for women's basketball. Gigi was motivated to change the way everyone viewed women in sports.
She was a beautiful, kind, happy, silly, thoughtful and loving sister and daughter. She was so full of life and had so much more to offer this world. I cannot imagine life without her. Mommy, Natalia, Bianka, Capri and Daddy love you so much, Gigi. I will miss your sweet handmade cards, your sweet kisses, and your gorgeous smile. I miss you, all of you, every day. I love you.

Sweden has seen a four-percent drop in the number of international air passengers. The air travel was down further, by nine percent. Meanwhile, the number of passengers who traveled by train jumped to a record 32 million last year.
The changes come as the Swedish-born action of "flight shaming" is getting support. More than ever, people are worried about climate (气候) change. They feel ashamed to use any kind of traffic that depends on fossil fuels (化石燃料). Nearly 23,000 Swedes have promised to go flight-free. They have, instead, shown interest in "climate-smart travel."
"Flight shaming" has put pressure on airlines (航空公司) to cut down on their greenhouse gas emissions (温室气体排放). Some of them have stopped using old and fuel-thirsty planes. The models they use now are lighter. Some airlines are also asking passengers to pre-order food. This helps to further cut down the weight of planes. As a result, much less fuel is being used now.
Richard Gustafson is the C.E.O. of a Swedish airline. He also supports the "flight shaming" action. However, he doesn't believe putting an end to flying is the only way out. Instead, airlines must take action to cut pollution. "The journey toward a cleaner world will be long," Gustafson said. "One day, a scientist will invent jet engines that don't depend on fossil fuels. I think those planes will appear in, say, 20 years' time."

In Ms. Yang's opinion, all of us should enjoy our childhood and try to be better. That's also the reason why Ma Xiaotiao, a boy in Ms. Yang's books who has now become a famous name, could be successful(在……以后) he grows up. Ms. Yang said she based the boy on a student of(她的) years ago. The boy's leadership skills and interest in(发现) new things touched Ms. Yang greatly. So she thought his story was(值得) writing.
It's the book The Diary of a Girl that brought fame to Ms. Yang. The book tells the story of Ran Dongyang, who is actually Yang's daughter. Ran hopes to bring (温暖) to all the girls her age. Ms. Yang's stories are magical. When we are reading her books, we find the children in the books are just (像) our classmates. After all, we should say goodbye to our childhood and(拥抱) the youth.
At the end of the interview, Ms. Yang said, "If you have dream(翅膀), you'll be able to fly in the sky." The world is fascinating, and we should never stop setting out.
In my view, Yang Hongying is the(女王) of children's novels in China.
Some students expect to be able to "relax" for their four years at university. Now, they are receiving(comfortable) "wake-up calls." Lazy students at big universities like Peking and Fudan are being "asked to stop"—to leave the university(quick).
It's a common belief in China that once (一旦) you've been accepted by a university, you will be promised to graduate. Your teachers may even tell youyou must study hard to pass the zhongkao and then the gaokao. Once you've jumped these hurdles and crossed the finish line, there will be no more pressure. University life willa piece of cake.
There is some truth to this. During junior and senior high schools, you(require) to do lots of exercises or take weekly tests. Yet at university, there is not much homework. And there is no pressure to be "top of the class." But universities require you to complete tasks, such as article, on time. And (you) must pass mid-term and final. In the past, many universities were less strict about these requirements. Failedexam? Don't worry! You would be allowed to take an easier one again.
Some universities, however, think making life(easy) for students than before isn't a good idea. Allowing students to leave the university no smarter than when they entered it isn't really helping them. It also makes the diploma (文凭) less valuable and(hurt) the fame of the university.
Getting knowledge is the purpose of education at all levels, from primary schooluniversity. And there is no "easy" way to get knowledge except through hard work.
We spend hours, days and years of our lives in school. Imagine you could design your dream school. What will it be like?
