Mr. Black loved his daughter Helen very much. Every day he spent all of his free time 1 with her. One day he had much work to do 2 couldn't play with his daughter. In order to keep her 3, he found a map of the world in a magazine and cut it into pieces. When he4, Helen came running to him and was ready to play. Mr. Black said he had 5 time to play right now. He told the girl to put the pieces of paper back together to a map of the world, and then they could both play.
About half an hour later, Helen came to her father and said," Okay, it's finished. Can we play now?" Mr. Black was surprised, saying, "That's 6! Let's go and see. " And sure enough, there was the picture of the world; all put together, every7in its place.
Mr. Black said, "That's surprising! 8 did you do that?" Helen said," it was9. On the back of the page was a picture of a 10. When I put the man together, the whole world fell into place. "
If you have no special plans for your holidays, why not spend your time helping others? Don't listen to people who say that young people today often think of themselves. It's not true at all. More and more young people in the USA volunteer to spend their school holidays working for others. And they don't do it for money. Here are some of their stories.
Alice, 17 I'm going to help the forest center build new hiking paths in the mountains. It's going to be terrific. I will spend the whole summer living in a tent and breathing the fresh mountain air. I'm going to sleep under the stars. It will be a nice sport, and I will be able to do something good at the same time! |
Jason, 18 This summer, I will volunteer with Special House Program. They build good, low-cost houses and sell them to the poor. They'll teach me what to do, so I am going to help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses. |
Trish, 16 I'm going to teach children who have trouble in reading. I'll work for a program called Reading for Life. Every day, I'm going to help children choose and read books that they like. I want to be a teacher, and I love children and reading, so this is going to be a great experience for me. |
This is a song millions of Americans will hear this New Year's Eve. It is called Auld Lang Syne (《友谊地久天长》). It is the traditional music played during the New Year's celebration. Auld Lang Syne is an old Scottish poem. It tells about the need to remember old friends.
The words "auld lang syne" mean "old long since". No one knows who wrote the poem first. However, a version (版本) by Scottish poet Robert Bums was published (出版) in 1796. The words and music we know today first appeared in a songbook three years later.
The song is played in the United States mainly on New Year's Eve. The version (译文) you are hearing today is by the Washington Saxophone Quartet. As we end our program with Auld Lang Syne. I would like to wish all our radio friends a very Happy New Year!
This is Buddy Thomas.
It was raining. I went into a cafe and asked for a coffee. While waiting for my drink, I realized there were other people in the place, but I sensed loneliness. I saw their bodies, but I couldn't feel their souls because their souls belonged to the Net.
I stood up and walked between the tables. When I came to the biggest computer, I saw a thin, small man sitting in front of it. "I am Steve," he finally answered after I asked him a couple of times what his name was. "I can't talk with you. I'm busy," he said He was chatting online and, at the same time playing a computer game: a war game. I was surprised.
Why didn't Steve want to talk with me? I tried again to speak to that computer geek, but not a word came out of his mouth. I touched his shoulder, but no reaction I was unhappy. I put my hand in front of the monitor and he shouted, "Leave me alone. " I took a few steps back, wondering if all those people were having a nice conversation with their machines, not with people, especially Steve. I wouldn't want to imagine the future of human beings if they preferred sharing their lives with machines instead of with people. I was worried and sank in my thoughts. I didn't even realize that the coffee was bad, just as Steve didn't notice there was a person next to him.

Watching TV is my hobby. I like watching TV very much because I think it has many advantages (优点).
First of all, watching TV is a good rest. After a day′s hard work, we need a good rest. Watching TV can make us not tired any more because of the wonderful music and TV plays.
Second, watching TV is entertaining (娱乐的). There are many kinds of entertainments, such as sports activities, singing and dancing concerts all over the world at any time. It′s not possible for us to go to every place to enjoy all the activities within a short time. We need about or over three hours to fly from New York to Pairs. But within just one second, TV can bring us from an NBA game in New York to a fashion show in Pairs by changing the channel (频道).
Most importantly, watching TV is educational. Our children can learn different kinds of subjects through the educational programs and it's easy for them to learn Chinese from a Chinese teacher in Beijing and to learn Russian from a Russian teacher in Moscow. We can even learn how to behave (表现) well from TV plays. At the same time, a teacher can teach millions of students without a huge (极大的) classroom.
A famous doctor named Mr. Smith worked in a big hospital. Lots of patients came to see him. He could find their illness quickly and gave advice, but he wasn't kind to them. Some young doctors wanted to be his students, too. Mr. Smith chose a clever one and taught him a lot. Then he to1d some of his patients to see the young doctor so that they didn't have to wait too long.
Few months passed, more and more patients went to see the young doctor instead of Mr. Smith. At first, Mr. Smith was very happy. He thought the young man would be a famous doctor soon. At last, few patients came to see Mr. Smith. "Why don't they come to see me?"he thought, "Is there anything wrong with me?"He decided to find out the reasons. So he went to the young doctor and found he was very kind to his patients. He checked them over carefully and asked them lost of questions, then encouraged them with the words: "Don't worry, there is nothing serious"; "Drink more water and you'll feel better soon. "The patients were happy.
Maybe I have an attitude(态度)problem. "Mr. Smith said. "Kindness and the words of encouragement are also good medicine to patients. "
My family members have a close relationship because our family has some rules.
Family dinners
My mother makes it rule that everyone should sit down at the table and have dinner together. I think this is one of the (easy) and most important rules to have as a family. Eating meals together (create) a sense of belonging(归属感). What's more, keeping the habit will add to everyone's enjoyment.
Night-time routine
Although it is hard for us ( keep )this routine(常规;惯例) at first, it has turned out to be a good habit. After dinner we usually have our playtime, and then 7:00 p. m. is bath time; 7:30 p. m. is time to have some milk; and my mother reads a story7:50 p. m. , and then I go to bed. This routine makes me ( wake ) up early in the morning and helps me feel (relax) at school.
Cleaning up
Cleaning up is a family matter. After dinner we help (we) parents to clean up the kitchen and clear everything off the table. After this, we (ask)to clean up everything that we were playing with in the daytime. So we won't step on hard or wooden ( toy) when we get up the next morning.
