We each have a memory. That's why we can still remember things after a long time. Some people have very good memories and they can easily learn many things by heart. Jack was such a middle school student, but he didn't like to memorize things, especially English words. Once the students in Jack's class were going to have an English test. They had to write "True nor "False" on the test paper. When all the other students were reviewing their lessons the night before the test, Jack was watching TV and playing computer games. "How can you make it?" When his classmates asked him in surprise, he didn't seem worried at all. "It will be easy," he said. UI have come up with an idea to pass the test. I' 11 take a coin with me. I' m sure I'll pass the test. "
The next day Jack came into the classroom with a coin. He sat down and began to toss the coin. When the coin came down on his hand with a certain side up, he wrote "False". In this way, he spent only half an hour finishing his test paper. He left the classroom one hour earlier than the others happily. The next morning, he saw the English teacher in the classroom. u Good morning, sir " he said. "Did I pass the test?" The teacher looked at him and smiled. "Ah, it, s you, Jack, just a minute. " Then he put his hand into his pocket and took a coin. He threw it into the air, caught it in his hand and looked at it. "I'm very sorry, Jack" he said, "You failed. " All the students laughed and Jack' s face turned red. There is no doubt that one can make great progress by working hard. Though a person has talent, if he doesn't have a good attitude, he won't be accented by life. Remember "No pains, no gains."
A change is coming in the forest. Scientists are trying to make the logging (伐木)companies stop clear - cutting. We have to protect the fish, wildlife and water quality. The forest is a beautiful place that people should be able to enjoy.
Everything would change if all the trees were cut down. The trees, animals and water depend on each other. Many plants and animals would be in danger of dying out. It would even change our weather.
This does not mean all of the trees cannot be cut down. It just means all the trees in one place cannot be cut down at one time. We should plant new trees when the old ones are cut down. Then the land won't be destroyed (摧毁)and the animals will still be able to live well.
The companies are beginning to take care when they cut down trees. They are now leaving many dead trees so that small animals will have homes. They are leaving many trees to give shelter for animals.
Both the companies and the forest scientists are trying to agree on things. They have to balance (平衡) the wood we need with protecting the forest. A good rule seems to be not to cut more than you grow each year.
Susan Cain was a shy girl. She always had a hard time talking with new people. But when she grew up, she became a reporter. But Susan thought that her shyness made her a better reporter. "Being shy makes me more believable—people feel more comfortable around me," she said.
The Shyness Institute reports that almost half of all people say that they are shy. Some people are not shy when they are with their friends. For other people, shyness can be a mental (精神的)problem. They become so worried that they cannot speak in front of people.
But why are some people shy?
Scientists once did a study on two-month-old babies. They found that of every five babies, one was very active (活跃). And one of every five babies was always quiet. These babies might be shy when they grew up.
Family also affects (影响)shyness Studies show that children who are shy usually have parents that have fewer friends and fewer family activities.
People who are outgoing are sometimes more successful. Shy people may feel that they have a disadvantage (不利因素).But shyness can be an advantage. They are good friends because they listen more than they talk. This can also make them successful.
A. For example, children who are always criticized (批评)by their family can become shy. B. This kind of baby liked to make noise. C. Shy people are often very good at listening. D. This job is usually for a person who likes to talk in front of people. E. But when they are in a new environment, they become afraid. |

The Antarctic is actually a desert. It is the only continent on the earth a river or a lake. The Antarctic is with ice all the year round. The temperature ever recorded there is zero at South Pole. used to think that a place so cold would have a heavy snowfall. But less than ten inches of snow falls there each year. That is less than half an inch of water. It's even much than of Sahara. The little snow that in Antarctica never becomes water. It continues to pile up deeper and deeper year after year and century after century. When the snow gets to be about eighty feet deep, it will be ice by the weight of the snow above it.
American women have fought for the same place as men for long. This is also shown in the culture and social life in different ways. The earliest change is that American women began to go out of home for work. That has made men not the only one that makes money for home. But soon they began to fight to get the same pay for the same work. So now we can't see different pays due to genders. And today, the American women are still fighting, because they have found that they don' t have the same chances to get some jobs. And they should have the ability to do it well. Though this fight has never stopped, they still accept that they are called after their husbands * family names after marrying them. One victory about their names is the word "Ms". They can be called Ms. Something, and it doesn't mean they are married or not, just like the use of " Mr."

MSF, an organization which sent trained doctors all over the world to help people who have suffered from disasters (遭受灾难)since 1971. At the moment, more than 27,000 trained doctors have taken part in MSF. The organization received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999. All kinds of doctors can volunteer for MSF. They need to be ready to go almost anywhere in the world and, of course, they should face difficulties. Most of MSF's work is in Africa. When MSF chooses a doctor for a task, they have to go for at least six months. When doctors have completed a few tasks, they might be sent on an emergency (紧急的)task following a disaster, such as an earthquake.
