Have you ever been to America? I was only an 11-year-old girl when my parents 1me that we would soon move to America. We were on the bus then. I cried. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing the radio program for school children again which I 2every morning.
In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying 3 to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving,I even felt a little 4because I thought about all the places I was going to see-the strange and 5places I had known only from books and pictures.
The first four years in America taught me the importance of optimism(乐观), but the idea did not come to 6at once. For the first two years in New York I was really 7-having to study in three schools and I 8most of my time learning the English language. I 9had any time for fun. Sometimes I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother 10and things became even harder for me. It took me 11to get used to my stepfather. I was often 12, and saw no end to"the hard times".
I had to do many things for the family since I knew English better than everyone else at home. 13things got better and better later and almost all common troubles 14at last. From those experiences I have learned one important rule: Something good is certain to happen in the end. 15you do not give up, and just wait a little!
Do you have brown hair? Are you taller than other kids your age? These characteristics were decided before you were born. You got your traits from your parents. They passed their traits on to you through genes (基因).
Genes carry codes (代码) for blue eyes or brown eyes. Genes say how tall you will get and what color hair you will have. You got half of your genes from your mother. You got half of your genes from your father. So you have your own set of genes. Each person gets different genes for each body part. That is why you look like but not exactly like your brother or sister.
A dominant (显性的) gene shows up most of the time. Brown eyes are dominant over blue eyes. A recessive (降性的) gene shows up less often. Light hair comes from a recessive gene. Dark hair is more common. Look at the eye color and hair color of the people around you. You will see that this is true.
Genes help to make you who you are. But they don't tell the whole story. Your genes may help you to be fast and strong. But you still need to learn how to run or swim or skate well .
As an English, I can speak three languages—English, German and French, so do you think the British people are very good language learners? The fact is that they aren't.Some statistics (数据) from the survey done by the European Commission (欧盟委员会) showed that 62% of the British people only speak English. 38% speak at least one foreign language and 18% speak two or more. Compared with the British people, 56% of the people in other European countries speak at least one foreign language and 28% speak two or more.
From this you can see that the British people are famous for not speaking foreign languages and that they are not good language learners in Europe.
And the survey also showed that English is the most widely-spoken foreign language. Many European people can have a conversation in English. That's why my people don't think it is necessary to learn a foreign language.
In Britain, students are not required to learn a foreign language. That means learning a foreign language is only an option at school. In UK schools it is common for children to start learning a foreign language at 11 and many of them give it up at 14. So why don't students continue learning foreign languages at school? Because they think it is more difficult to get good marks in languages than in other subjects such as science or history.
To solve this situation, the British government is looking for different ways to improve language learning at school. One way is to start learning it at a much younger age. Another one is to give school children more choices.
Changing the British attitude (态度) to learning foreign languages may be a hard task but the government decides to try!
I will never forget my experiences in the United States. I went to an American college a year ago. Yet I did not know the real American society until I was hurt in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court(法院).
After the accident, my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and decided to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was amazed. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible(负有责任的) for my accident, I'd have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer. Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him. But every day I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time. The final examination report consisted of ten lines, and it cost me $215. My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met. But after that he avoided seeing me at all. He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided to refuse his help. And he made me pay him $770.
Now I had to act as my own lawyer. I told the insurance(保险)company the date I was leaving America because of my inexperience(缺少经验). Knowing that, they played for time and I left without getting a cent.
My experiences taught me two things about America: firstly, in a country like America money is everything. It is more important than friendship, honor or professional morality. Secondly, foreigners are still being unfairly treated. So when we talk about America, we should see both its good and bad sides.
Lizzie-s diary from Antarctica (南极洲)
Day 3: Tuesday, December 2
We planned to go to Rothera that morning. We'd be staying there for the next two weeks. Because Antarctica is the windiest place on earth, sometimes you can't fly at all.
We had a nervous wait over breakfast to find out if we'd be leaving that day. People have to stay in Stanley for weeks while the pilots wait for good weather
It turned clear at 9:30 and we took off at 10:30 on a little red plane called a Dash-7. But even when we were in the air, there was still a chance we wouldn't be able to fly the whole day.
Day 4: Wednesday, December 3
After waking up in the Antarctic for the first time today I can understand why everybody who comes here falls in love with the place. It is really beautiful.
We're staying at Rothera Survey base with mountains of ice all around. It s about minus 20C today, which for me is very cold, but the regulars(常客) here are often seen walking around in T-shirts !
Day 5: Thursday, December 4
I woke up to another beautiful sunny day here in the Antarctic. I'm told it's a bit colder today, about minus 50C , but it's not very windy so it feels warmer. Those of us who are new to the base have to do a special training course before we're allowed to go off base to other stations or to go snowboarding over the nearby hill.
Day 7: Saturday, December 6
Not a cloud in the sky and it's warm enough to sit outside (in a jacket).
The most amazing thing about this place is how the scenery (凤景) changes every day.At first I thought I was going mad. I'd step outside in the morning and think, "I'm sure that big mountain of ice wasn't there yesterday." It's because the sea ice is always moving—slowly thankfully !
When holding a party, people usually want to invite some friends and relatives.
Writing a party invitation is an art. There are important things that should be kept in mind when you prepare an invitation. In fact, it's easier to write an invitation than you think. It just takes some practice.
It's confusing(使人困惑的))to receive an invitation without knowing the host. If you plan to send an e-mail invitation, guests might not even read the e-mail without the name of the host in the subject line(主题栏).
Secondly, your invitation should include the reason for holding the party. After receiving the invitation, guests can prepare proper clothes or the presents that they will bring with them.
It's even better to tell your guests the duration(持续时间) of the party.
The next thing you should write on your invitation is the exact place where the party will be held. Maybe some of your guests don't know the location. We know everyone can search online for it, but it's very nice to provide the information for the people who don't know much about the place.
In this way, your guests can have enough time to prepare for your party.
A. If so, you should also include directions in the invitation. B. But do you know how to write a party invitation? C. How important it is to write a party invitation! D. Firstly, the name of the party's host should be written on your invitation. E. They might wonder how to get there on time. F. Besides, the date and the time of your party are also necessary. G. Lastly, you should send invitations at least two weeks ahead of time. |

Long ago, only the cat had the ability to trace its prey by scent(根据气味追踪猎物). The other animals used their eyes their prey. The dog wanted to learn the skill, so he went to visit the cat. The cat said yes to the dog's request and asked him to stay in his house during the lessons. After a few .the dog thought that he could use the skill and wanted to go home.
You haven't learned the skill yet, "said the cat.
" But I have to go home now, "the dog said.
" All right" the cat said. "You may go to back tomorrow but not today."
The next morning, when the dog came to say goodbye, the wife told him the cat went out early in the morning but she didn't know where he went.
Actually, the cat hoped to test whether the dog had leamed the skill. The dog started by the footprints of the cat. However, the cat jumped from one rock to another and then hid himself in a tree.
The dog followed to the two rocks but he could not find any footprints there. He became . He kept going round and round the tree, but he couldn't trace the cat.
The cat watched every move of the dog. Finally, he said, "Look up! You have not completely learned the skill!"
That's why the dog only knows how to trace its on the ground.

There was a young college student. he always thought that he had chosen a wrong course,so he played (game)every day and didn't study at all. Day after day, he became very (bore). One day, he put a note in the homework that he handed in, saying, " It is said that today's college students are (cheap)than potatoes. Do you agree?" The professor looked at the note but said .
Later that day, the student was about to leave the classroom when the professor called him back. The professor (take) a small potato that had sprouted (发芽) out. "Do you know how much it ( cost)?" he asked the young student. "It' s soft and poisonous (有毒的). Nobody wants to buy it even if it's free. " After saying that, the student threw the potato .Then the professor (show ) him another potato. It was half as big as a football and perfectly round. "This potato is organic (有机的). It is not only large and fresh but also free of pollution. it is very expensive. it sells well around the world. " The young man was impressed by what the professor said. The professor put the big potato his hand and said, " Be such a potato, young man. "
