"I have cancer. "Mom said and held me in a tight hug. I could feel her chest shaking as she tried not to cry but failed.

For all of my twenty-four years, my mom had been supportive. Strength and protection had always flowed from her to me. Now I knew it would have to flow the other way.

Mom didn't stay down for long. After the shock of breast-cancer, she armed herself with a notebook and a pen and a thousand questions for the doctors. She took notes on white blood cell counts and medications(药物) with long names as though she were studying for entrance exams into medical school. "The not-knowing is the worst. "she said.

The operation was successful. The chemo(化疗) was the harder part. I went with Mom to every chemo treatment. She rarely complained, though her hair was gone and her toenails and fingernails fell out one by one. She joked that she could save money on nail polish and put it toward the doctor bills, even though she never wore nail polish. "Cancer can take my hair, my nails, my health, my very life.  But it can't take my smile. "Mom said.

Mom learned to share her fears with me, and it formed an even deeper bond between us. Yet I am certain there were fears she didn't share because she was still protecting me-worries she only shared with Dad. Even in the darkest hours, she would just joke about the cancer.  Mom always said, "When you look your greatest fear in the eye and laugh at it, you take away some of its power.”

Mom was one of the lucky ones. She did beat her cancer, though not without scars. From her, I've learned I may not get to choose what I face, but I do get to choose how I face it.

    1. (1) What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?
A . There were other ways to treat cancer. B . Knowledge of cancer would be helpful. C . Mom had to stay stronger to beat cancer. D . I should be the one being there for Mom.

A . Humorous and generous.   B . Considerate and ambitious. C . Optimistic and determined. D . Caring and knowledgeable.

A . The fear Mom shared with me. B . The ways Mom faced fear. C . The jokes Mom told me. D . The bond Mom and I formed.
    4. (4) What lesson did the author learn from Mom?
A . Luck counts in beating diseases. B . Complaint does no good to one's health. C . Positive attitudes get one through hardship. for D . Sharing feelings helps reduce sufferings a lot.

In between all the measures to battle the severe air pollution in Delhi, India, there's one more option-a bar that has" pure air"'。

Founded by Aryavir Kumar, Oxy Pure, Delhi's first-ever oxygen bar, offers 15 minutes of 80-90 percent pure oxygen, costing Rs 299 ($4. 2). Customers are given a lightweight tube for oxygen intake. The device (装置) is placed near the customer's nostrils (鼻孔) through which they are advised to breathe in the oxygen.

The bar also offers its customers several aromas (气味) to go with oxygen, including lemongrass, cherry and more. According to the aroma people choose, each session promises to improve sleep patterns and digestion, cure headaches, and even claims to work as a treatment for depression.

Bonny Irengbam, a senior sales assistant at the bar, said, "Some people, who try it for the first time, will feel relaxed and fresh. But only people who do this regularly will get real benefits. By regularly, I mean once or twice a month. We don't encourage back-to-back sessions, as increased levels of oxygen in the body can make a person dizzy. "

Dr. Rajesh Chawla, a senior doctor at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, said, "Even if you breathe in the so-called pure oxygen for two hours in a day, you will go back to breathing the polluted air for the rest of the 22 hours. The concept is purely money-driven. "

Recalling the first few months of the bar, Irengbam admitted that people were sceptical.  "Many people criticised, saying we were selling air. Others were simply scared to breathe through the tube."

Irengbam said the bar saw a significant rise in the number of customers two to three days after Diwali, an Indian festival mainly celebrated by fireworks and lights, as the pollution levels were high.

    1. (1) What do we know about the oxygen intake?
A . It surely has a promising future. B . It will always cause side effects. C . It was not well received at first. D . It can cure people of depression.
    2. (2) Which of the following can replace" back-to-back" in Paragraph 5?
      A . Once-a-month. B . Once-in-a-while.  C . Once-and-for-all. D . One-after-another.
    3. (3) What is Dr. Rajetha Chawla's attitude towards the bar?
      A . Doubtful. B . Positive. C . Unconcerned. D . Ambiguous.
    4. (4) What is the purpose of the passage?
A . To explain how to breathe in the oxygen. B . To introduce the first oxygen bar in India. C . To show people's responses to the device. D . To advertise for Aryavir Kumar's business.

A lecture hall should be like a church-a little too dark, much too cold, and uncomfortably silent. You should feel guilty opening your water bottle, because all 200 people in the room can hear it.

So when I'm trying to pay attention, the last thing you should be doing is carrying on a conversation about your last weekend party or anything else.

During the past school term, I've had enough. One of my biggest complaints of large class sizes is the tendency for three to five friends to sit together and loudly whisper each others' ears off for an hour and 15 minutes straight. My stupid monkey brain can't help but focus on your conversation about the difference between ash blonde and light blonde colored hair that look exactly the same.

To me, it just feels like a waste. You're actively wasting money, and missing vital information. We (and the government) pay quite a lot for our education, but you are here to ignore someone significantly more experienced than us, in classes we picked, for hours every week.

I know major requirements can be boring, but this is still an education. It requires two-way effort. Most of students here have at least one goal in common: success. Not every checkpoint on that path is going to be filled with joy. Sit down, shut up, and force yourself to listen to your professor. Society tells us it will eventually pay off.

Or maybe it won't because you don't want to.

I actually don't care if you decide to pay little or no attention to the lecture itself, so long as you're not being disturbing.

For those willing to try, in 20 years when you finally pay off your debt with your fairly secure white-collar job, you'll look back and be happy that you went through the lectures.

    1. (1) Why is a lecture hall compared to a church by the author?
A . Both places are open to the public. B .   Both places are supposed to be quiet. C . Both places can seat over 200 people. D . Both places help rid people of their guilt.
    2. (2) What can we infer about the author from the passage?
A . He likes persuading others. B . He tends to make complaints.  C . He values education as a duty. D . He cares much about friendship.
    3. (3) How does the author feel when writing the passage?
      A . Annoyed. B . Deserted. C . Thrilled. D . Worried.
    4. (4) What may be the best title for the text?
A . Hard Work Pays Off! B . Focus on the Lectures! C . Wasting Your Time Is a Shame! D . Mind Your In-Class Behavior!

Giving a gift that will stand the test of time is always a challenge, but giving plants is one way to try. Whatever type of plant you choose, it's sure to last longer than cut flowers.

The most important thing to consider is where it will live. If your friend's place is bright and sunny, a succulent (多肉植物) makes sense.  Succulents naturally grow in desert-like environments, while orchids (兰花) grow in damp forests.

It can help you understand what conditions it prefers. So, while picking out plant gifts, ask the salesperson for more information to ensure what you choose is a match for where it will end up.

Whatever plant you choose, make peace with the fact that it may or may not survive. After all, a house's inside is pretty dissimilar to where that plant naturally grows. So we can all only do our best. If their leaves dry up, they're not getting enough water. If they're reaching their leaves toward the light, they may need more of it. So offer that advice to your friend, and then let it go.

If you have a plant-interested friend on your gift list, why not choose a plant which is easy to keep alive in his place and looks lovely? You don't need to wrap it, as a simple bow is enough. It's a way to ensure your gift gets a good start in life.

    A. You can always put them inside a paper bag.

    B. But you can consider giving a nice pot and bag of soil.

    C. Knowing the natural history of a plant is equally important.

    D. Even relatively experienced green thumbs sometimes lose

    E. The key is to pay attention to plants-really look at them each day. .

    F. If you want to choose plants as gifts, the ideas below will help you on your way.

    G. If your friend has a cool home with no direct sun, an orchid is probably a better choice.
