There was once a boy called Jack who loved to make a lot of friends. He was always proud that he had so many friends at school.
One day his grandfather said to him, "Jack, you spend much time making friends but are you sure the friends you are1of are your true friends? I am afraid that some of them are nothing more than classmates." However, Jack didn't2it, "We always play happily together." "Wait a minute," the old man left, and soon returned as if carrying something in his hands, but Jack could see nothing there.
"Take the3chair. It's rather hard to sit on it because you can't see it. But if you take it to school and4sit on it, you'll activate* its magic. Then you'll be able to tell5your real friends are."
Jack wanted to know whether it was true or not,6he took it to school. At break time, he asked his classmates to make a circle, and he put himself in the middle, with his chair. "Nobody moves, or you7see anything amazing."
Having difficulty8the chair, Jack tried to sit on it and fell straight onto his backside. It seemed that everyone around9had a pretty good laugh. "Wait! Let me try again." Jack said. But he missed the10again. At the same time, what he heard were just their catcalls*. Jack didn't stop trying. But he kept falling onto the floor ... until, suddenly, he was in mid-air …
Jack11the "chair." "He saw George, Lucas, and Diana-- three of his best friends,12him up. At the same time, many others he had thought of us friends had done13but make fun of him and enjoying his every fall,
Jack14that true friends were those who care for him, but not just those who happened to be passing by. And the one who took15in his misfortunes* was even less of a friend.
To protect people from COVID-19, many countries are making efforts these days. Here are some special rules in the following countries.
Serbia |
At one point, Serbia's government introduced a "dog-walking hour" from 20:00 to 21:00. But that has now been stopped, because a lot of dog-owners are against it for it is unhealthy for their dogs. |
Panama |
In the Central American country, men and women are able to leave their homes for only two hours at a time, and on different days. No one are allowed to go out on Sundays. "This rule is for nothing more than to save your life," the security minister Juan Pino said. |
Colombia |
In some Colombian towns, people are allowed to go outside based on the last number of their national ID number. For example, people with an ID number ending with 0, 7or 4 are allowed to leave the house on Mondays, while those with an ID number ending with I, 8or5 can go outside on Tuesdays. |
Sweden |
The government of Sweden believes that people will do the right thing. Gatherings of more than 50 people are not allowed on Sundays but schools for children under the age of 16 remain open. Many people are still meeting friends as usual in the restaurants, on which people both at home and abroad have different opinions. |
Japan is one of the leaders in the scientific world when it comes to lifetime. As its population grows older, scientists and researchers look for new ways to keep them alive. A research team in Japan has worked to develop a man-made, robotic tail that could help old people keep their balance*.
Students and searchers at Keio University of Japan have made a new invention called Arque. About 1 meter long, it closely follows the movements of a seahorse's tail*. Junichi Nabeshima is a researcher and graduate student at the school's Embodied Media Project. "When a person is going to fall towards one side, the tail moves to the opposite side to help him keep balance. For example, if a person is going to fall to the left, it will move to the right," Nabeshima said.
The advantages are that the man-made tail could not only help the old, but also younger people who may have some problems with their balance. Here's how it works. The tail uses air to move four man-made muscles* in eight different directions*.
But sometimes it begins to work several seconds after it feels the human losing balance. So the tail is still at the test stage, and researchers are trying to find other ways to make the tail move better.
The researchers are also studying ways their invention can help the working population. For example, they're looking for ways to help factory workers who often do heavy lifting and carrying.
A robotic tail is far from the first inventions developed for the human body. Scientists have created robotic arms and hands that use muscle memory to pick up things. Mechanical legs have been developed to help people who lost legs.
A Utah man who has been in a wheelchair for more than 30 years has created a hunt* called "Wheelchairs in the Wild" for people like him who have difficulty getting into the outdoors.
Clint Robinson broke his neck after being thrown off a horse at a race 32 years ago. He has done his best to keep getting into the outdoors to hunt and fish, the Daily Herald in Provo reports.
"We're trying to get new injured* people back out into the field, enjoying the outdoors and wildlife that's out there. We show them that there are other things that they can do. It's not good to sit in the house doing nothing," Robinson said.
The youngest hunter in the hunt was 13-year -old girl Missy Cowley who couldn't walk. Her father loves to hunt but didn't know how to make her comfortable in the wheelchair. Her mother, Cindy Cowley, said it was amazing for her daughter to go hunting. "We always told her when she was little, 'you can do everything you want to do ... ' but we really didn't know how we were going to get her up there to hunt," Cindy Cowley said. Missey Cowley said it was a great experience that also allowed her to meet other people who use wheelchairs. "This is wonderful. In fact, I can do it," Missy said. "And I love being outdoors."
Jerry Schlappi, an officer from Division of Wildlife Resources, who helped with the hunt, said Robinson is a perfect example showing other wheelchair users with disabilities* that they don't have to give up what they love.
A ship was destroyed* during a storm at sea and only two of the men on it were able to swim to a small and quiet island.
The two survivors*, also good friends, not knowing what else to do, agreed that they had no other choice but to pray* to God. However, to find out whose prayers were more useful on the hopeless days, they made the island into two parts and stayed on opposite sides of the island. .
The first thing they prayed for was food. The next morning, the first man saw a fruit-bearing tree beside him and he ate its fruit himself. The other man's land remained barren.
After a week, the first man was lonely so he prayed for a wife. The next day, another ship was completely destroyed, and the only woman survivor soon became his wife. On the other side of the island, there was still nothing.
Soon the first man prayed for a house, clothes and more food. The next day, like magic, all of these were given to him. However, the second man still had nothing.
Finally, the first man prayed for a ship. In the morning, he found a ship at his side of the island. The first man boarded the ship with his wife and decided to leave the second man on the island behind, because he thought the other man did not deserve* to receive God's blessings, since his prayers had never been answered.
As the ship was about to leave, the first man heard a voice from Heaven, "Why are you leaving your friend on the island?"
"My blessings are mine alone, since I was the one who prayed for them," the first man answered. "His prayers were all unanswered and so he does not deserve anything"
"You are mistaken!" the voice sounded unhappy and angry. "He had only one prayer, which I answered. If not for that, you would not have received any of my blessings."
"Tell me," the first man asked in surprise, "What did he pray for?"
"He prayed that all your prayers would be answered."
