It was summer. Martina wanted to go camping with her friends, but her parents wanted her to learn a foreign language. They let her decide which language to learn.
Martina looked at the catalog(目录), "I will learn Icelandic (冰岛语), "she said.
Her parent were angry. " Ieclandic is a useless language!" they said. "No one speak Icelandic!
"But you said I could make my own decision, "Martina said.
She had to stay at home every day and study Icelandic. "When you fish your homework you can go to play, "her mother said. "And don't forget to listen to your language CD. "Her mother was strict with her because of her choice.
But even if she finished her homework there was no one to play with, because all her friends were away at summer camp. She was alone. She couldn't stand it.
The house was very hot. Martina studied hard. She was not lazy. She did several pages of homework every day. She listened to her language CD. One day, she got tired of the CD and turned on the radio.
A quiz(智力竞赛)show was on. The prize was a trip to Iceland. "How many vowels(元音)does the Icelandic language have?" asked the announcer(播音员).
Martina knew the answer! She quickly called the radio station. "The Icelandic language has 14 vowel, "she said "That is right!" said the announcer, "You win a trip to Iceland for you and your family. "
Martina's parents were very surprised. Martina was so happy. She was going on a trip this summer after all. Suddenly, Icelandic was a very useful language.
People and dogs have been living together for a very long time. When did dogs and people become friends? Where did dogs come from?
A group of scientists tried to answer these questions. They just did a study about the history of dogs. In the study, they looked at the DNA of dogs all over the world and found that dogs, like humans, shared DNA with their relatives(亲戚). The scientists put together a big family tree for dogs.
It went all the way back to the animal' beginning.
In this way, scientists learned about the history of dogs. The first dogs lived in Asia. They were born about33, 000 years ago. At first, there were only about 6, 400 of them. Their parents were wolves (狼).
The new study answers many questions. It brings some, too. For example, what caused wolves in Asia to become dogs all those years ago?
One idea is that their DNA slowly changed and the wolves became dogs in the end. And later dogs became "man's best friend". Or it could happen the other way around. It was possible that some wolves started living with people before they became dogs. Living with people led to many changes to these wolves. It changed their DNA, so their offspring(后代)became dogs.
By studying DNA, scientists now have a much better understanding of the history of dogs. ▲ How exactly dogs came to be our friends is still unclear.
Making eye contact(接触)during talks is very important. It helps to build good relationship with others. In fact, making good eye contact is a skill everyone should work on.
You may meet many people every day. If you want to make them remember you, what can you do? Making and keeping eye contact with them can help you make a good and strong impression (印象)on others easily.
People will believe what you are saying if you make eye contact with them. Instead, if you don't do it or you keep breaking eye contact to look around, they will think you are worried or scared and they will question what you are saying.
When you notice someone is looking at you, you'll pay more attention to your actions.
You may look around to see if there's something wrong with you. Taking note of your actions is a good thing. It can make you behave(表现)well.
When you're at a place where you don't know many people and you have to talk to them, at this time, making eye contact can help you become sure about yourself and then you'll be better at speaking in front of them.
When talking to others, probably you'd like to speak in a way you are comfortable with.
But if you keep eye contact with your listeners, you'll speak more slowly and it will make them hear you more clearly and understand you better.
A. It makes people trust(信任)you. B. It lets people know what you are saying clearly. C. It helps you trust yourself and show your better. D. It makes people remember you. E. It helps you act well. |
