Elevators can feel like magic. Step inside. Select your floor. Poof! The elevator quickly takes you where you want to go.
But an elevator doesn't run on magic. It's a machine. And it's made up of several smaller machines. These machines work together to make the elevator move. An electric motor powers the elevator. Most elevators run with the help of a machine called a pulley. A pulley is a wheel with a rope around it. A pulley system helps to move the elevator car up and down. The controller is the “brains” of the elevator. When you push a button, the controller tells the car which floor to go to.
Elisha Otis was the inventor of the world's first safety elevator. In 1854, he showed how it worked to the public for the first time. Curious crowds gathered in the World's Fair in New York to see it.
The first passenger elevator was made in 1857, in New York City. Since then, technology has improved. Elevators have become more energy-saving. They are also much faster. Have you heard of the Empire State Building? Its elevators can take visitors from the ground floor to the 86th floor in less than one minute.
Elevators play an important role in the modern world. “They make taller buildings possible,” Dot Mynahan says. “What's more, they are also important for disabled people and they make buildings more accessible to everyone,” she says. What's next for elevators? “The possibilities are endless.” Mynahan says.

the population of China?
Modesty(谦逊)is a kind of important virtue in many cultures. It is same in China. However, the Chinese idiom“毛遂自荐”seems to disagree with it.
During the Warring States Period, Prince Pingyuan saw the city of Handan was in ,so he wanted to pick 20 talented people to ask for help from the state of Chu to save his city. However, he could only find 19 people who wereenough. Then, a man Mao Sui stood out.
The prince looked at Mao Sui and asked, "How long have you been here with ?”
"Three years," Mao answered.
"I hear that a person with talent is like an awl(锥子)in a cloth bag。.Its point will soon pierce(戳穿).the bag. You've been here for a long time, I haven't seen any of your achievements. Maybe you don t have any talent." said the prince.
“What I'm asking you now is to put me into that bag. If you do that, I will pierce through it. Not the point but also the whole awl," Mao said seriously.
Hearing this, the prince Mao to join his team, and Mao was really helpful.
Now the idiom "毛遂自荐” is used to describe someone who to do something.
Buying for Hubei
CCTV news hosts and livestream (直播)stars seem to be in different worlds, but these two groups came together for a special live broadcast on April 6.
CCTV news host Zhu Guangquan and livestream star Li Jiaqi hosted a show on Taobao. What they did is to help sell products for some companies in Hubei. These companies have been terribly affected by COVID-19(新冠肺炎).
From hot dry noodles to oranges, they showed people 16 kinds of products, all from cities in Hubei Province.
The show lasted about two hours. It attracted millions of people and about 660,000 orders were placed. The total amount was about 40,000,000 yuan, according to China Daily.
Hubei, known as the Land of Fish and Rice, suffered greatly. Its products, from lotus roots to oranges and mushrooms, could not make their way to the market.
With the situation getting better and better, Hubei is trying to find its footing again with the help of the nation. Crawfish(龙虾),one of the main products, is popular with people all over China. According to the statistics(统计数据)from Hubei Agricultural Development Center, by March 26,710 tons of crawfish were sold to more than 360 cities in China every day.
