When people think of tigers, they think they are strong and dangerous. But now, the big animal is calling for our1.
There were once eight kinds of 2in the world,3three died out during last century. In the last 70 years, the number of Siberian tigers(东北虎) has gone from as many as 300 to somewhere418 and 22.
The World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) started a programme recently. It is about to put an end(结束) to tiger poaching(非法狩猎) and5wild tigers. China, together with 12 other countries, has joined in. The aim(目的) is to double (使.....加倍) the number of wild tigers in the next ten years. .
According to research by Chinese officers and the WWF, the Siberian tiger is already6of the world's most ”endangered(濒危的) animals. “ If the government doesn't take any action, it's quite7that there will be no more Siberian tigers in China in 10 to 20 years,” said Zhu Chunquan, director of the WWF's Beijing office. Wild animals such as the red deer, sika deer(梅花鹿) and wild boar(野猪) are the tigers' main food. There isn't enough8for wild tigers because of the hunting of these animals. So the9thing people can do is to save the animals which tigers eat.“ To protect the tigers, we need to call on more people to10eating and hunting wild animals.
Now people are trying to make the world a better place for birds to live in. People in China start the Bird Loving Week. Students from all parts of the country have been doing something to care for birds.
Meng Yiru, a l6-year-old student from Nanyang Model High School in Shanghai, asked people to protect birds: Never put birds in cages. Go to visit them in the wild if you really love them.“ I'll never forget the little sparrow(麻雀) I kept in a cage," said Meng.“It stopped eating after I caught it and soon died. ”Meng and her classmates put many of their ideas in their 300- word report to ask people to take better care of birds.
China is the home of more than 1,000 kinds of birds because the country is large and has almost every weather type to suit them.
But not everyone knows how to take good care of them. Some cut down trees and destroy the birds' homes. This has made the number of the birds go down quickly. A study shows that one out of eight birds, more than 1,200 kinds, in the world could die out. This includes 95 percent of albatrosses(信天翁) and 60 0percent of cranes(鹤). Some birds you see every day, like pigeons and parrots, are also in danger!
To help them, people have set up about 7,500 reserves which are suitable and safe for the birds. In China, there are big reserves like the ones near the Dongting Lake in Hunan and the Poyang Lake in Jiangxi. Is there anything that you can do for birds? Take care of their homes, Feed them with something delicious. Well, think it over and begin to do it now!
Animals need protecting
Animals are natural resouirces that people have wasted all through our history. Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport, or simply because they are in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the world forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States are considered in danger.
Why should people care about animals? Because we need them. And because once they are gone, there will never be animals any more. Animals are more than just beautiful and interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems. For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks, the farmers' stores of corn and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice. With no hawks to keep down their numbers, the rats and mice multiplied( 繁殖) quickly.
Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger. Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid(禁止) the killing of all animals and plants on the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.
On my recent trip to Sydney with my parents, we visited the Wildlife Park.
The Wildlife Park has lots of different animals. Some are native(当地的) to Australia and can only be found there. There are over 600 animals there, including kangaroos, koalas and crocodiles(鳄鱼). They are kept in their natural environment. I like the Wildlife Park better than a zoo where most of the animals
are in cages(笼子).
We first spent some time with the kangaroos. We were allowed to touch and feed them. It was very exciting to be so close to them. There were koalas there too. They looked very cuddly(令人想拥抱的). Although we were not allowed to carry them, I got to take a photo with one. It is a wonderful souvenir(纪念品) of my holiday in Sydney.
The Wildlife Park has plenty of freshwater and saltwater crocodiles. Some of them are really big and scary(吓人的) with huge teeth! I did not want to get too close to them.
There was also a bird show. The keepers showed us different species(物种) they had. I saw an old parrot which could “talk". It made a great impression on me.
I enjoyed the trip very much. There was so much to see.
Last week, Class 1 went on a trip to London Zoo. They had a wild day out! Almost everyone has a favourite animal. But they are almost all different! Some people like funny animals like monkeys which could jump around and play with each other. But almost every animal is somebody's favourite- even the snake!
The trip to the zoo was for study, as well as a day out. They were there for an art lesson! Their art teacher, Mr Hall, takes the class on a trip to the zoo every year. “It's good for students to get out of the classroom and do art," he said.“ Many students do their best work on this trip. “
The trip gave Class 1 something else to talk about. They argued about whether zoos are cruel. The zoo animals are from all around the world. How could they all be comfortable? How could they be happy fenced in and watched by lots of people? What do you think?
A. Class 1 had a great discussion. B. All the students in Class 1 liked the trip. C. But Class 1 didn't go there to learn about science. D. Many people like soft, furry animals like pandas. E. It helps them see that they can draw and sketch anything, anywhere. F. Nobody enjoyed it. |
A: Hi, David. What did you do last night?
B: I saw a film last night. It's about pandas.
A:
B: Wonderful. But it made me sad.
A: Did you learn a lot from the film?

A:
B: I think we should protect them.
A: I agree with you.
B: Hmm, I think we should give them a warm home, and don't hurt them.
A:
B: Good idea. The club must be interesting.
A. Let's join the Love Animal Club first. B. But what should we do to protect them? C. I learnt pandas are in danger now. D. What a pity! E. How was it? F. What's the film about? G. Where do most animals live? |

In some parts of the world there are large deserts. There aren't trees or water in these Travellers must take food and water with them. The only animal that can walk the desert is the camel. It can go food or water for a long time, and it can heavy things. People call the camel “the ship of the desert”. The camel is very big. It has one or two humps on back, short ears and a long neck. The camel can hold water in twelve deep pockets. Each pocket has a mouth, and the food doesn't mix with the water. When the camel wants some water, it can get it out of the pockets.
Once upon a time, some children were f at the seaside when they caught a turtle. They beat it with stones. Just at that time, a young man came up and d them away. The turtle was very thankful and said, "Thanks for your kindness. I would like to invite you to a fantastic place. ”
The young man rode on the turtle's back and was t to a secret palace in the sea. When he reached the palace, he was amazed at the sightseeing, “What a nice palace!" To t him, the king of the turtles gave him a very big dinner. He hadn't e so much delicious food before. He was pleased with everything.
After dinner, the king said, “I'm going to give you two boxes, but you mustn't open both. Do r it!" The young man promised(保证) that he would o . _only one. Just then, a large wave sent him out of the sea.
After g back home, he opened the bigger box. To his surprise, the box was full of gold s brightly. “My God! I'm rich now!" Then he thought, “There must b something more expensive in the other box.” He broke his promise and opened it. Suddenly he became an old man who was over 80 years old. He was so sorry for what he did, but it was too late.
The tiger is the largest wild cat in the world. The big cat weighs about 363 kilograms and is about two metres long.
Tigers wait until it's dark, then they go out to find their food. When a tiger sees an animal, it moves very quietly, then jumps on the animal to kill it. It can take several days for a tiger to finish eating its kill. The tiger stops eating until it has had enough, and then it covers the dead animal with leaves. Later, when the tiger is hungry again, it comes back to eat more.
Tigers are different from others in the cat family: they like water, and they often jump into rivers to swim.
Some tigers live in very cold places--in parts of North Korea, Eastern Russia and Northeast China. Other tigers live in warm places一in India and parts of southeast of Asia.
All tigers are in danger. People kill them to use their skin for clothes and their bones for medicine. In addition, there is also less and less land for tigers to live on. But now people know that tigers are in danger and have made plans to protect them.
